Bumper 100-page issue for new Doctor Who Magazine

Tuesday, 19 August 2014 - Reported by John Bowman
The new edition of Doctor Who Magazine catches up on set with Peter Capaldi for what is billed as his most extensive and revealing interview to date.

In issue 477 – on sale this coming Thursday – the publication asked him how he had gone about making the part his own:

"Well," says Peter, "you begin with yourself. You begin with those elements of yourself that you feel would be at home in the role. There's an old actors' adage that you don't become the role, the role becomes you. It's trying to find those parts of you that will fit with the Doctor, and understand those bits that don't come so naturally to you, that you have to fabricate. I kept looking for people in my life who I thought had elements of the Doctor about them, and were inspirational in some ways. I composed a list of those . . . "

"Also, it's recognising what's been written," Peter continues. "My Doctor is written slightly differently from some of the other Doctors, and the Doctor changes quite dramatically from episode to episode. Some demand more of your comedy chops, graver or more serious episodes demand a more sombre creature. All these variations have to live in the same body, in the same face. Putting all that together is tricky . . ."
The new DWM, which is a bumper 100 pages this edition, includes a giant double-sided poster featuring Capaldi on one side and a Dalek on the other (pictured below) plus:

Radio Times

Tuesday, 19 August 2014 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Next week's edition of the Radio Times continues the tradition of a Doctor Who cover for the new series, with Peter Capaldi gracing the front as the magazine introduces readers to a new series and a new Doctor.

Inside there is a new exclusive interview and cover short with Capaldi, plus a guide to all twelve of the episodes from the lead writer Steven Moffat. The issue also advertises itself as a "Blippar special", and includes additional Doctor Who content where the Blippar logo appears.

On being unveiled as the new Doctor in August last year, Capaldi says:
There was a lot of cloak-and-dagger stuff on the way to the studio; the BBC genuinely felt it had to maintain secrecy so I was taken to a car park, dropped off by one car and put in another car with a blanket over my head. For all I knew, because I couldn't see or hear anything, there might have been no one there and it could all have been a load of baloney.

Fan Events

Saturday, 16 August 2014 - Reported by Marcus
There is a Doctor Who event at this years Burning Man festival in Nevada, which takes place between 25 August and 1st September.

The Burning Man festival is a bizarre event which happens in the middle of a desert salt bed in Nevada. It is different from other festivals in that there are no paid bands or DJs. The participants create their own entertainment. It is famously a place where makers and artists build amazing sculptures and art cars, with an emphasis on things that burn!

Quixotes Cabaret Club and Bar is a British camp at the festival. They create a venue and a bar and invite anyone at the festival with any entertaining act to come up and perform. Each year they have a different décor theme. This year it is Doctor Who.

The entrance to the camp will be through a TARDIS against a brick wall and the organisers will have an art car in the shape of K-9.

The camp is located at 7:30 and Ephesus, the cabaret nights are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday around 9pm, with a Doctor Who extravaganza evening on the Friday. The club will be glad to see any Re-incarnations of the Doctor, Time Lords, assistants and monsters but warn that Daleks may well be turned around and pushed out. If anyone wishes to get in touch with the camp, please e-mail Paul Pickup at bigfoot.com
An "unofficial" Doctor Who Disneyland theme day is taking place in September.

In Galliday 1.5 hundreds of fans in Cosplay and fanshirts are expected at the California theme park, taking over rides, playing games and contests.

A page has been set up on Facebook as well as twitter and Tumblr.

Organiser Amy McCain told Doctor Who News
We had a trial run in January and the response was nothing short of amazing! 400+ people showed up. Afterward, our fanbase exploded! They all demanded we do 2 events a year instead of one. Now here it is.
