Monster Invasion begins!

Thursday, 5 May 2011 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The first issue of the new partwork magazine, Doctor Who Monster Invasion, is launched today by BBC Magazines.

Based around collectible trading cards, the first issue comes with two packs, the first of a three-part poster, and a "mega Battle Zone play mat". The issue will be available for three weeks (the magazine is fortnightly), with the second and third issues coming with a TARDIS cardholder for the collection.

There is also a subscription offer which can be taken up online via the Monster Invasion website. Subscribers get additional gifts over the course of their subscription, including additional card packs, box file and swaps box, squirty sonic screwdriver and a backpack.

The website also includes further information relating to the magazine, plus exclusive games and features which can be 'unlocked' using codes published in the magazine itself.

Editor Annabel Gibson has provided more details on what is seen to be the 'first wave' of the collectible trading cards:
Every issue features a new card game, a top 10, a gadget guide, website info, a where’s the Doctor? picture puzzle (think Where’s Wally? meets Doctor Who but even better!) and an episode guide. As we know our readers absolutely love facts, the DWMI partwork collection also builds into a complete A-Z of aliens and includes a huge pull-out slamdown poster, where the scariest monsters go head-to-head!

There are 165 cards to collect in set one, including stinky scratch ‘n’ sniff cards, shiny foil cards, a moving lenticular and special augmented reality cards that allow you to see the Doctor, his TARDIS, and some of his most fearsome foes come to life on your hand in 3-D. Seeing a 3-D Dalek levitate off your hand for the first time is something you’ll never forget, I guarantee!

There are 52 fortnightly issues to collect, though you can also buy the (nine) card packs separately at retail. Also don’t miss our collector tins, which contain a special edition mystery card!
Annabel also commented that the 'second wave' is already in preparation:
My team is already working on set two, which features 180 new cards to tie in with the second half of series 6 of Doctor Who, broadcasting in the autumn. But for now, as the Doctor would say, Geronimo!

The magazine is also being promoted through an advertising campaign including television adverts.

Olympic TARDIS?

Thursday, 21 April 2011 - Reported by Chuck Foster
BBC Worldwide have revealed the results of a poll undertaken to see where readers of Doctor Who Adventures would like the TARDIS to land:

Doctor Who fans want to see TARDIS in Olympic adventure

For a machine capable of travelling through time and space in seconds, the 100 metres or high jump should be a breeze for the TARDIS, as a survey of Doctor Who fans reveals the place they would most like to see the time machine land is the Olympic Stadium, Stratford, London.

In a poll of 1,428 BBC Magazines readers, conducted for Doctor Who Adventures Magazine, 21% of respondents said the Olympic Stadium was the place they would most like to see the TARDIS land, beating off competition from the pyramids (13%), with music festival Glastonbury coming third with 11%. This was followed by next weekend’s Royal Wedding (10%) and then the Silverstone Grand Prix (6%).

The new issue of Doctor Who Adventures (214), features a competition for readers to submit photos of the TARDIS in the "craziest place imaginable", with the chance to win a Sony Cyber-Shot camera. Full details of the competition are in the magazine.

Of course, the Doctor has already visited the Olympic Stadium on screen, with his tenth incarnation arriving in time for the Opening Ceremony (Fear Her, 2006). Indeed, it was the Doctor himself who saved the Games by carrying the Torch to its final destination - and lighting the Olympic Flame!

SFX Issue 208 & Readers' Poll

Wednesday, 6 April 2011 - Reported by Harry Ward
This month's issue of SFX features the Doctor and Amy Pond on the front cover, plus a world exclusive preview of the new series of Doctor Who and results of the Craziest Ever Doctor Who Poll.

Doctor Who content in this issue:
  • World first TARDIS sound effect cover! If there’s a problem with magazines, it’s the not-insignificant lack of sound effects to accompany your literary journey. The good news? This is a problem of the past (for one issue at least…) thanks to the world first TARDIS soundcard tucked inside issue 208.
  • Look Who’s Back! To celebrate The Doctor’s imminent return to telly boxes across the globe we popped down to the big smoke to snap time-travelling trio Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill for our exclusive cover feature. There’s some words with that Steven Moffat bloke in there somewhere too.
See a full list of non-Doctor Who related content from this issue here.

Issue 208 of SFX is on sale from Thursday 7 April.

A few weeks ago SFX.co.uk asked fans to vote in a number of categories for their Craziest Ever Doctor Who Poll. The results have been announced today on their website. Fans thought Helena Bonham Carter would make the best first female Doctor. She received 14.79% of the nearly 2,000 fans who voted. In second place with 9.5% is Tamsin Greig, who played a nurse in The Long Game.

Dave Golder, online editor of SFX.co.uk said:
Some might argue that Helena Bonham Carter’s whole career has been one long dress rehearsal for the part. The Doctor has always been an eccentric and actresses don’t come much more eccentric than Helena. Of all the Doctors so far she is probably most like a female Tom Baker, though we can see little bits of Troughton, Tennant and Smith in there too. What should she wear? A black wedding dress probably.
