The Moonbase: animation credits

Pup Ltd, the company responsible for the classic Doctor Who range of DVDs over the last few years, have reported that several of the lead creatives involved with the production of the animated episodes of the recently released The Moonbase were absent from the credits due to a technical error.

Executive producer Dan Hall has confirmed the following:

As the Executive Producer of the commissioning company I should like to confirm that the following should have recieved credits as Animators on the project:

Hayley Parker
Derek Moore
Thomas Barkel
Charlotte Barkel

Their involvement was of an important creative level, and was crucial in producing what was both a creative and commercial success for the Classic Doctor Who DVD range.

Smith and Gillan - The first camera test

Karen Gillan has posted online one of the first pictures of herself and Matt Smith in costume as Amy Pond and the Doctor - taken at their initial camera test.

The actress shared the image via Twitter on Tuesday, saying: "1st pic of Matt and I [sic] in character was released 4 yrs ago today [sic], but, I have the real one..from the 1st camera test".

Having already appeared in the show as a soothsayer in The Fires of Pompeii in April 2008, Gillan made her debut as Amy two years later in The Eleventh Hour on 3rd April 2010.

On 17th February 2010, the BBC released a montage shot featuring the duo to promote the start of Series 5, as reported by Doctor Who News, with the world having been given its first look at Gillan and Smith in costume seven months earlier, when an official image was released as filming began on the series - also reported by Doctor Who News.

It is currently unknown when exactly the test photo - shown below - was taken.

Cinema outing for The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear

BBC Worldwide have announced a cinematic outing for the two recently recovered stories The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear.

The stories will be shown together at the Prince Charles Cinema in London on Saturday 22nd February from 11:15am, and will also include a 45-minute Q&A session, chaired by Toby Hadoke, with cast members from the stories and a member of the Troughton family.

Fiona Eastwood, Director of Consumer Products at BBC Worldwide, said:

The recovery of these missing stories was undoubtedly a high point for BBC Worldwide and Doctor Who fans around the world last year, and we hope there will be more to come. We’re delighted that we’ve been able to make both of these stories available and the marathon screening at the Prince Charles Cinema is a great moment for Doctor Who fans to come together and celebrate their recovery.

Paul Vickery, Head Programmer at the Prince Charles Cinema said:

I couldn't be more proud to be part of this one-off experience - as a cinema, it's a dream come true for us to finally have the Doctor fill our screen and delight audiences and fans of the show. As a HUGE fan of the series I'll be there too, front row-centre. I’m very excited about having the opportunity to revisit these incredible episodes in a truly unique way… on the big-screen. It's sure to be one of those events for the PCC history books and I for one can't wait.

Dick Fiddy, Missing Believed Wiped Co-ordinator at the BFI, added:

These finds are truly significant, offering a further opportunity to re-visit the Patrick Troughton era. The recovery of these episodes indicates the possibility that more episodes are out there somewhere awaiting re-discovery – a mouth-watering prospect for all Doctor Who fans and those interested generally in the recovery of missing UK television programmes.

Philip Hinchcliffe Presents ...

Big Finish have announced a new set of adventures featuring Tom Baker as the fourth Doctor with Louise Jameson as Leela, written by the pair's original producer Philip Hinchcliffe alongside Ghost Light writer Marc Platt.

Former Doctor Who producer Philip Hinchcliffe has been reunited with his stars, Tom Baker and Louise Jameson, for ten brand new episodes of Doctor Who made for audio at Big Finish.

Doctor Who: Philip Hinchcliffe Presents will consist of two epic full-cast stories, filled with all the drama and chills that marked Hinchcliffe’s era of the TV show.

The Ghosts of Gralstead is a six-part adventure, and it finds the Doctor and Leela returning to Victorian London, in the year 1860:

At St Clarence’s Hospital, respected surgeon Sir Edward Scrivener requires the bodies of the dead… At Doctor McDivett’s Exhibition of Living Wonders and Curiosities, miracles are afoot… And in Gralstead House, the ghost will walk again. Mordrega has come to Earth...

Carolyn Seymour – who is known for Quantum Leap, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager and, notably, for playing Abby Grant in the original Survivors – plays Mordrega. Sir Edward is played by Gethin Anthony (Game of Thrones).

The second, four-part adventure is called The Devil’s Armada:

The TARDIS materialise in Sissenden Village in the sixteenth century. Catholic priests are hunted, so-called witches are drowned in the ducking stool, and in the shadows the Vituperon are watching… and waiting...

Doctor Who: Philip Hinchcliffe Presents also includes a special hour-long documentary featuring interviews with Tom, Louise, Philip and the cast, and is released in September.

The CD boxed set will be launched at Big Finish Day 5 in Slough on Saturday 13th September, which Tom, Philip and Carolyn are attending.

Not On Your Telly

Not On Your Telly is a new book by broadcast historian Tim Worthington, looking into the dustier corners of the TV Archives.

There's plenty of Doctor Who-related content, including in-depth features on The Android Invasion and The Space Pirates, as well as the story behind the first ever Dalek radio show from 1966, an account of what it was like to see the recovered episode 2 of Evil Of The Daleks for the first time, and a look at the 'Sunday Classics' serials produced by Terrance Dicks and Barry Letts.

There's also lots on other shows including Fist Of Fun, Play School, and little-known TV appearances by The Beatles and Bob Dylan.

Silva Screen Award Nomination

Silva Screen have been nominated for an International Film Music Critics Association Award for the 2013 release of Doctor Who: The 50th Anniversary Collection

The four CD set, released in December, featured 129 tracks of music music from five decades of Doctor Who. It included many pieces that had never before been released, with tracks from composers including Tristram Cary, Brian Hodgson, Dudley Simpson, Geoffrey Burgon, Paddy Kingsland, Roger Limb, Malcolm Clarke, Keff McCulloch, Dominic Glynn, John Debney, Mark Ayres and Murray Gold. The album was produced by Mark Ayres, Reynold DaSilva and David Stoner with liner notes by Mark Ayres and album art direction by Stuart Ford.

The nomination is for BEST ARCHIVAL RELEASE OF AN EXISTING SCORE – COMPILATION

Other nominees are Lethal Weapon Soundtrack Collection, music by Michael Kamen, Eric Clapton and David Sanborn; Michel Legrand Anthology, music by Michel Legrand; Varèse Sarabande: A 35th Anniversary Celebration, music by Various Composers; The X-Files: Volume Two, music by Mark Snow.

The International Film Music Critics Association (IFMCA) is an association of online, print and radio journalists who specialize in writing about original film and television music. The annual IFMCA Awards, which were first presented in 2004, are the only awards given to composers by film music journalists.

The winners will be announced at the 10th IFMCA Awards on February 20, 2014.

New Doctor Who Character Figures Released

Character Options have announced a new series of Doctor Who figures including the newly regenerated Twelfth Doctor.

Other figures in the set are The Eleventh Doctor, Clara Oswald, Weeping Angel, Assault Dalek, Imperial Guard Dalek and a Zygon.

BBC corrects itself over the Doctor's new boots

A Loake boot of the type worn by Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.

The BBC has had to correct itself over the make of boots being worn by Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.

The entire costume ensemble was revealed last Monday, with the BBC stating that the footwear was Dr Marten shoes. However, it was subsequently realised that the corporation had erred and that they were, in fact, made by Loake - a Kettering-based footwear firm with a warrant of appointment to the Queen. It also transpired that Capaldi had bought the boots himself.

In a report in the Daily Telegraph, Nicholas Roumana, the owner of the British Boot Company (spot the coincidence as regards the shop's initials!) in Camden Town, said of the Loakes:

Peter Capaldi came in a week or two before Christmas and said he was looking for a pair of smart dress boots. I suggested this one, because not only is it very smart, it's exclusive to us and made in England. It's a great boot. He bought it in size 10.

According to reports, a second pair was bought last Tuesday to be used by Capaldi's stunt double.

A tweet from the official Doctor Who Twitter account last Friday stated the following:

Doctor Who Official: The new boots worn by the Doctor are not Dr. Martens as our expert costume department believed they were but he may wear them in the future.

The new outfit has been deconstructed in a Telegraph online piece in which Crombie is reported as saying that it didn't make Capaldi's coat, although it was labelled a Crombie coat by the BBC. However, this could simply be a case of the coat having been made out of Crombie cloth. According to the online piece, Crombie has provided the BBC's costume department with several coats for the new series.

Twelfth Doctor costume revealed

The BBC have released the first promotional image of the costume for the Twelfth Doctor, as played by Peter Capaldi.

Commenting on his costume, Capaldi said:

He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.

Lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat added:

New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over - Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!

Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, commented:

Peter Capaldi's Doctor is officially recorded in history today with the unveiling of his new costume. It's sharp, smart and stylish - The Twelfth Time Lord means business.

Previously unseen in the UK for 45 years and re-mastered from newly discovered tapes located in Nigeria, the formerly missing Doctor Who classic - Web of Fear - will soon be available to own on DVD. Starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor, alongside Frazer Hines (Jamie) and Deborah Watling (Victoria) as companions, this iconic story sees the TARDIS narrowly avoid becoming engulfed in a mysterious cobweb-like substance in space before arriving in the London Underground railway system.

The Doctor soon discovers that something strange is afoot as the tunnels are being overrun by the web, an army or robotic yetis and The Great Intelligence. Before the original broadcast in 1967, this story was deemed so scary that the Doctor delivered the following message to television audiences:

Thank goodness… Oh, it’s you… I thought for one moment it was… I’ll just sit down for a minute. I’m glad I met you as a matter of fact; there’s something I want to tell you. When we start out on our next adventure – Jamie, Victoria and I – we meet some old friends. Yes, and we also meet some old enemies. Very old enemies. The Yeti as a matter of fact. Only this time, they’re just a little bit more frightening than the last time. So I’ll warn you that if your Mummy or Daddy are scared, you just get them to hold your hand. *Gunfire* Here we go again. I’ve got to go. See you soon – I hope!

The Web of Fear is also famed for introducing one of Doctor Who folklore’s most beloved characters; Nicholas Courtney as Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart who later became the Brigadier. The Brigadier’s legacy lives on in contemporary Doctor Who, with Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (his daughter) starring in the show’s 50th anniversary episode The Day of the Doctor.
