Torchwood: Week Four/Five Filming (UK)

Wednesday, 9 February 2011 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The week commencing 31st January saw filming continue apace in South Wales, plus a return to work in Los Angeles, too!

Whilst Julie Gardner returned to the States, Russell T Davies made his presence felt on location throughout the beginning of the week (including participating in an interview for BBC Wales Today). Bill Gierhart also returned to the States to begin work on Block Two there, whilst Bharat Nalluri continued filming in the UK. Cast-wise, John Barrowman and Mekhi Phifer were in South Wales for the 'big' shoots before LA beckoned, but Eve Myles, Kai Owen and Tom Price continued throughout the week, albeit in an 'exotic' army base!

Filming this week saw locations ranging from an old butchers-cum-pharmacy in Swansea, several old haunts in Cardiff Bay, and then in private at another familiar site, MOD St. Athan.

Times cited within the reports are in GMT.

Monday 31st January

Two teams were active during the course of the day, almost at opposite ends of the South Wales coast!

The morning saw a base set up at Magor, in which various vehicles were assembled that would later be taken out onto the M4 for scenes set travelling on the motorway. Doug Williams was on hand to see the set-up:
09:04 Confirmed TW setting up filming now in Hampton Hotel Carpark
09:44 Defo TW one burt tree van, one security guard and a small crew.
Oh and a police traffic car
09:54 They are setting up for a rolling motorway chase.
Car on back of low loader type filming truck
10:18 Not long now and they will be on M4.
Police ready. No sign of JB or anyone we know
10:30 looks like just base and setup for motorway scenes
10:44 Had to leave :( been told they have carpark and conference
room booked all day so if your in the area!!

The afternoon saw action resume in Swansea, this time at a recently closed butchers, which the production crew had skillfully transformed into a pharmacy. Chris Williams takes up the story over there:

The Swansea shoot was dramatic, and potentially explosive, but in the interest of maintaining a 'tease but don't spoil' policy, I'm restricted as to what I can reveal. For me, the most interesting thing was the work of the BBC Cymru Art Department, who I had a long and pleasant chat with. They'd acquired an old, closed and mouldy butcher's shop in Frogmore Avenue and transformed it into an old-fashioned, but pristine family pharmacy.

The pharmacy, complete with leaded glass windows, each costing over £800 to produce, gave the shop a totally authentic feel. Fully stocked with 'chemistry' goods, each item polished and positioned to perfection, the pharmacy was so convincingly real, potential customers had actually tried to buy things, and one elderly lady had actually attempted to collect her doctor's prescription!

The idea of 'big budget' comes to mind here, as this lovingly created on-street set would appear in Torchwood for a matter of minutes, and would not (possibly!) survive the evening's shoot!

One thing was confirmed: the UK filming is all largely based on exterior shots. Most of the interior shooting will happen in LA, as one of the production team told me, you'll see Captain Jack go through an aged wooden door into a rustic Welsh cottage, and when he's inside - the identical closed door you'll see will be on a studio set in LA, as will Jack!

Lots of American voices were around today. A silver haired woman who seemed to work closely with RTD and BM, a guy in a silly hat and a large guy dressed in his Arctic survival coat. It'd be nice to get them all identified! As ever, RTD was present, pleasant and personable, happily signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans. I'm impressed he takes the time to do this.

As for the shoot, it happened when Swansea was at its coldest, ie, after dark and at about -4°C. The team from REAL SFX (experts in ka-boom pyrotechnics) turned up, along with a trailer marked 'Animals For Filming'. I expected a lion or something ridiculous to get out, but instead, it was Spike, a Jack Russell terrier who was the star of the shoot.

There were multiple takes of a scene involving a car, some very bad driving and some near collisions. Each was highly choreographed, and repeated ad infinitum, with Spike and his on-screen owner dutifully acting out their roles. The last thing we heard was an enormous CRASH, accompanied by a stack of smoke and dust, and the Art Department's skillful work was gone, forever, and ambulances and police cars were ready for action... all in the interests of Torchwood, of course!

You can find more photos from the day from both Chris Williams and Iris Halliez on Facebook.

Tuesday 1st February

Torchwood returned to its spiritual home, with filming taking place in the evening at Roald Dahl Plass - though shot from an angle away from the old "Hub" Water Tower! The daytime saw activity in another familiar location, outside the Old Natwest Bank which has served as Gwen and Andy's police headquarters ever since the first episode, Everything Changes. A third location was also in use today, the exterior of the Coal Exchange (the interior of which was used during Children of Earth).

With such high-profile locations, fans were clearly able to witness the activity for once! A few reports and photos follow.

I arrived in town at about 10am, and headed right for Mount Stuart Square, a 'classic' square of 'government-style' Victorian architecture used several times in Doctor Who, previous Torchwood episodes and even Upstairs Downstairs. There were two locations, one, an old bank dressed to resemble perfectly a Cardiff police station, and the Coal Exchange, transformed into a modern city hospital. The amount of work done by BBC Cymru's art department was phenomenal.

The police station now had blue doors, frosted glass with the words 'POLICE' and 'HEDDLU' in frosted glass, and a shambles of real-looking police cars and vans parked outside it, and 'Crimestoppers' etc posters shabbily on some external windows. It really looked 100%

The Coal Exchange too, as a hospital, a tribute to its creators, a total transformation having been achieved in just 24 hours. Both of the oak entrance doors had been removed and been replaced with glass swing doors and modern 'foyer' architecture, and the signage was perfect for a contemporary hospital. We had an Emergency Admissions door, no smoking signs, hospital department signposts, gurneys, parked up ambulances, etc. You'd easily have been fooled it was real if you were a passer by!

Slightly eerily, a shrine had been set out in front of the hospital. Hundreds of cards reading such stuff as 'Another day with our precious Emily', and 'Come home soon, dad!' I notice one rather cheeky one which simply said 'We love you, Russell!' - with a happy smiley underneath. RTD would indeed be touched! The shrine was adorned with candles, burning incense and flowers, and looked real - and well established!

Several scenes were filmed here, the major one involving Eve, Kai and the baby in front of the hospital. Other scenes involved ambulances racing to and from the hospital. Amazingly, though on TV it will look as though they moved at speed, perhaps for hundreds of meters, in reality they moved for less than 20 meters before the scene was cut, and the next section of it filmed separately.

Eve and Kai were fluent and comfortable in their roles, though the baby was rather odd. On occasions - it was a real human baby, looking perhaps a year old. I other scenes, it was a mere bundle of perfectly-folded rags, lovingly taken out of a box marked 'Anwen'. What a way to transport a young child! Several people, by the way, thought raggy Anwen looked about half the size of real Anwen, but I guess we'll see if the cameras correct this apparent discrepancy!

We first saw Tom Price outside the mock police station, ex-Nat West police station. In full uniform, he was immediately personable, and actually played up for the crowd. At one point, he started photographing us with his white iPhone whist in character, and then made rather amusing faces. He posed for pictures, obligingly wearing his hat on request, and happily signed at least a million autographs. He's a cool guy. His shoot was ruined countless times by two rather noisy seagulls which, I think deliberately, decided to squawk immediately upon hearing the
word 'Action'!

The evening shoot started late, at around 10.30pm. We had our first glimpse of John Barrowman and Mekhi Phifer, who I was previously certain had returned to the US. Eve, in huge hair curlers, Kai, Rhys and plastic Anwen were on set too, all arriving in their own separate cars.

Eve, Kai, John and Mekhi were involved in the filming. Loads of goofs, John and Eve cracking up, some cartoon running meant we had at least 20 takes. After each one, John and Eve would 'let their hair down' and treat us to dancing, hand and thigh slapping and general JB tomfoolery. It really was funny to watch - they have awesome chemistry between them!

I loved it when John moved into his car to warm up between takes. Each time, he's smile, pose for more fan photos and would exchange a few words with us. He also enjoyed more than the odd laugh with other cast members, at one point dragging Tom Price into his car, and slepping him firmly across the buttocks! Tom immediately announced that he's enjoyed the experience!

Poor Mekhi appeared frozen to the marrow, was wrapped up like Scott of the Antarctic and was constantly drinking coffee in an attempt to stave off hypothermia!

Later scenes involved car chases, SWAT assaults, shooting and a kidnap... but here we're heading into spoiler territory!

You can find more photos from the day from both Chris Williams and Iris Halliez on Facebook.

The two scenes I saw yesterday were Gwen and Rhys meeting Andy outside the hospital, and Gwen, Rhys and Jack getting cornered by Rex and the Police, led by Andy.

During the first scene, Andy meets Gwen and Rhys (who is holding baby Anwen), smiles and says "long time no see", so this is their first meeting of the series by the looks of it. They then have a short exchange which ends in Andy saying to Rhys "Gwen Cooper was the best Police officer we ever had!"

Second scene was Jack, Rhys (again, with Anwen) and Gwen, sitting on the steps on the Plas. Rex seems to be with them, too. Jack is explaining something to Gwen. She asks him something, and he shows her his wrist, which has a red cut/scar on it, and no vortex manipulator. Rex, who is beside the trio, and has a white shirt with a gunshot wound and blood on, says something to Jack. Presumably he's asking him what's wrong, and Jack yells "It doesn't concern you!". Then he says "You there, CIA, do something useful!". Rhys then shouts "She's just a kid, Jack!", gesturing to Anwen. Then Police cars surround them from all angles, and Andy emerges.
Gwen: Hold it there! [to Andy]
Did you call them!? [the CIA]
Andy: They're in charge.
Jack: Say's who!?
Rhys: He can't arrest us, he's American!
Rex: This isn't an arrest (he then goes on to say
something about it being a plead for help)

Now get me out of here! Get me home, go!
That was it, more or less. At the end John made a little speech about how he was glad Torchwood was moving on to do bigger and better things, so looks like that's the end of the filming in Wales.

I'll admit it: I didn't think we'd ever see Torchwood filming again in the Plass. The events of Children of Earth: Day 1 seemed pretty final. All the buzz around Miracle Day suggested TW was looking forward, not back. When I heard they were due to film at the Coal Exchange, I thought it was nice they'd be coming back to Cardiff Bay, but had no hope that this would mean filming near the water tower.

So, yesterday was a nice surprise. Seeing TW back where it all began reminded me what I love most about the show, and why watching it being filmed is such a pleasure. Three things: The Cardiff locations, that are actually meant to be Cardiff. That lovely cast, who evidently enjoy making the show, and are happy to engage with the fans. And meeting so many positive fans, who love Torchwood as much as I still do.

You can read more filming reports from Alun at his blog Posterous, and further photos from Tuesday on Flickr

Wednesday 2nd - Tuesday 8th February

After all the high visibility of the previous days, Torchwood disappears behind fences once more as filming moves to MOD St Athan - using the same hangars that featured in Children of Earth!

As such this meant that we were back to the tantalising tidbits that Twitter would have to offer, as Kai Owen and Tom Price 'assaulted' us with banter! Further cast tweets came from a couple of supporting artists, Bay Radio presenter Jay Curtis and extra Laura Morgan.

In addition to St Athans, another report surfaced of additional filming at Barry Island on Monday morning:
2:58pm: They've been filming explosions on Barry Island beach, I've only heard after the event unfortunately ... they were about an hour ago.

Filming has now wrapped in the United Kingdom, which looks to bring an end to the first block of filming for the new series of Torchwood - the next block has already commenced filming in the United States. However, with Kai Owen and Tom Price being cited as not able to attend the Gallifrey One Convention in Los Angeles on 18th-20th February due to filming commitments, it is expected that the Torchwood cast and crew will be returning to the UK in the next couple of weeks!

Wayne Knight to guest star in Torchwood?

Tuesday, 8 February 2011 - Reported by Harry Ward
According to clues left by the Torchwood production office, actor Wayne Knight is to guest star in an episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day.

Knight is most notable for playing Dennis Nedry in Jurassic Park and Newman in Seinfeld.

A twitter message posted by the BBC Torchwood account on Monday evening gave us our first clue:
We've got Alexa Havins here with us today with a special guest, here's a clue "uh uh uh didn't say the magic word".

Costumer Alana Stone later tweeted another:
"Dodgson! Dodgson! We've got Dodgson here! See? Nobody cares. Nice hat!"

Both of the clues given are lines said by Knight's character in Jurassic Park.

At the moment the production office has only been releasing clues as to who the special guest is, and it has not been made clear if Wayne Knight was actually on set filming for Torchwood.

Doctor Who: filming update - doing the Charlestown!

Friday, 4 February 2011 - Reported by Chuck Foster
This week saw the cast and crew descend upon Charlestown in Cornwall, where filming was to take place aboard one of the square rigger sailing ships docked at the Georgian harbour. The four day shoot generated a lot of local interest, with the latter days seeing the media and hundreds of fans watching on for glimpses of the series stars in action!

As recently reported, the episode being shot includes guest stars Hugh Bonneville as the "Pirate Captain", and Lee Ross as the "Boatswain", both of which joined Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill for the shoot.

Monday

Davey Dee:

Charlestown is about half an hours drive from my office, so I dropped in there at about 11am this morning. Production base was in position in a nearby car park. Not a huge amount of activity at the location - basically about a dozen art department guys dressing the harbour and one of the tall ships moored in the harbour. There looks like quite a bit of work to be done yet before they're ready to roll and there were no lighting and camera facilities on location at the time, so I don't imagine they'll be shooting today (though I suppose a night shoot is possible). (photos in our previous update)
Paul McAvoy and Andrew Jones:

We saw Karen Gillan, the pirates and the stunt coordinators rehearse a scene on board a pirate ship. It seems that someone (presumably the Doctor or Rory) has just been forced to walk the plank. Amy fights back but is taken off guard. The bit where she runs and knocks everyone over is meant to be for a rope swing, which there's also a video for.

Tuesday

Steve Green:

Just back from Charlestown afternoon watching set dressing and set up then about 5pm Karen Gillan walked down the road... then rehearsals on the Pirate ship including swinging from the rigging and sword fight no less...

They are allegedly filming until 4am tomorrow then again from approx 5pm Wednesday eve... (hotel staff told us)

Davey Dee:

Big location set up. Massive. Huge cast and crew. Dozens of vehicles. Loads of practical FX - smoke, pyrotechnics, water, fans. The lot. Pirates, swordfights, Amy on a zip-wire, pentagram, divers.

Mark Humphries:

Wednesday

Today was "media day", as the papers woke up to what was happening in Cornwall and started reporting on the proceedings. BBC Cornwall's Chris Young and Keith Martin had both been down to see the action (see Keith's photos/videos on his website), and reported in this news item:
There may be a tall ship in the port, but it's surrounded by several flood lights. The crew were filming from 4pm on Tuesday 1 February into the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Rachel who works at the local pub in Charlestown watched it all happening. She said: "It was a really good experience with all the special effects. If you do want to go down it's well worth it, but be very quiet. We had Alice in Wonderland filming last year, but it wasn't as big as this."
The Sun concentrated on Karen Gillan sword antics:
IT'S Captain Who-beard as Doctor's pal Amy Pond fights on a pirate ship in the new series. Amy - played by Karen Gillan, 23 - swung from ropes and fought with a cutlass during shooting on the ship in Charlestown, Cornwall.
Similarly, the Mail was interested in the Doctor's companion:
Karen Gillan plays the Eleventh Doctor's assistant and was snapped yesterday rehearsing scenes on board a ship in Charlestown, Cornwall. Wrapped in a long blue coat, wellies and a bright pink scarf to keep out the cold February weather, the 23-year-old redhead looked like she was really enjoying herself and she leapt around the ship practicing her moves.

She was also caught on film swinging on a rope at the side of the ship and engaging in some swashbuckling action while filming at night. The onlooker who captured the moment on video said: 'It seems that someone, presumably the Doctor or Rory, has just been forced to walk the plank and Amy fights back but is taken off guard. The bit where she runs and knocks everyone over is meant to be for a rope swing.'

The BBC South West programme Spotlight were also on hand to record some of the action and onlooker reactions, which was broadcast during Thursday evening's programme.

Thursday

Davey Dee:

Massive crowd of onlookers there tonight - couple of hundred easy. So many, in fact, that the production team stopped proceedings for 15 minutes or so to allow Matt, Karen and Arthur to greet the crowd and sign autographs. Incidentally DWC were filming the size of the crowd, so expect a segment on that in the relevant episode.

No pics of the filming. Couldn't get anywhere near (the crowd was six deep!), but I'm sure there'll be others along in due course. But to convey the scale of local interest in this location shoot here are a couple of shots of some of the crowd.

Paul McAvoy and Andrew Jones:

In this video, the Doctor, Amy and Rory battle the elements through the storm. The sirens are also afoot, as are pirate captain Avery and cabin boy Toby.

Not sure if it's mentioned but blood seems to summon the Siren, that's why the pirates all use sticks. When Amy threatens the crew with her sword one of them mentions that "just one drop of blood is all she'll need".

(more photos from Paul and Andy from the 2nd/3rd February may be found here)

This is Cornwall also published an article on filming, and provided a slide-show of photos from the shoot.

And after a long few days shoot, the last word goes to guest star Hugh Bonneville this morning:
05:05 Bye bye Cornwall. "Bore da Caerdydd.
08:16 Filming all night. Not filming now. Tweeting now. Going to bed... NOW.

David Walliams talks Doctor Who

Friday, 4 February 2011 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The actor David Walliams has revealed that he will appearing in a forthcoming episode of the next series of Doctor Who.

Speaking on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show this morning, when asked about which franchises he'd like to be in, the actor said:
I've actually been offered a part in Doctor Who, which I'm very very excited about. I've said yes, because I've always wanted a part. I don't think I can reveal much, I can just say I'm an alien. (I film it) in a few weeks. Soon! It's all happening soon, my life is starting soon!

(Chris also asked about if he was offered the role of the Doctor) I think any actor wouldn't turn down that role, yes. I won't be cast now though, because they're getting younger!
(he also mentioned his Comic Relief projects including a spoof band Fake That for which he would include Catherine Tate (portraying a man) and David Tennant in the cast if he could!)

The interview is available to hear on the BBC's iplayer service (from 2:34:35) for the next seven days. BBC Radio 2 have also made the studio webcam recording of the segment available via their YouTube channel:

The Web of CavesWalliams is a professed Doctor Who fan, and leant his vocal talents for Big Finish's audio adventure Phantasmagoria. He also appeared in a number of sketches alongside Mark Gatiss for BBC2's Doctor Who Night in 1999, and in December 2008 newspapers reported the odds on him replacing David Tennant as the Doctor dropping to 8-1.

Christmas last year also saw a Dalek checking in at FlyLo Airlines in trails for the Walliams/Lucas mockumentary Come Fly With Me.

"Bad Wolf" returns!

Thursday, 3 February 2011 - Reported by Chuck Foster
An old name has emerged associated with the production of Torchwood!

Bad Wolf Productions LLC is the company name that was registered by BBC Worldwide Americas Inc in the United States on the 16th September 2010, and has now appeared on documentation relating to filming currently taking place in Los Angeles.

The use of the name is an in-joke by the production team - it originally featured in the first series of the revived Doctor Who, also masterminded of course by Russell T Davies. It featured throughout that series and was ultimately unveiled as a message sent back through time by the Doctor's companion, Rose Tyler: "I am the Bad Wolf. I create myself. I take the words. I scatter them ... in time, and space. A message to lead myself here."

The company name has provided links to a couple more members of the production team:

Jill Rytie Lutz's online CV with business connnections site Linkedin indicates that she is Travel Coordinator, and joined the production in January (when filming began); prior to this she worked in a similar capacity for The Event, and has been involved in other production capacities for projects like Beneath The Blue, Deadland and We Were Soldiers

The site also cites Paris Pickard as Art Department Coordinator (from November 2010); in her entry she says: "I'm on the BBC TV show Torchwood shooting at Warner Brother's Studios.". Her previous credits include Angels and Demons, Pushing Daisies and Frost Nixon.

Finally, with action ramping up once more in the United States, some of the production team have resumed their hints of activity on set during the production via Twitter, including providing us with faces for some of the names involved!

Russell T Davies talks Torchwood

Wednesday, 2 February 2011 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Torchwood writer/executive producer Russell T Davies has spoken to BBC Wales Today about the forthcoming series and how he sees the future.

It's brilliant to return to Torchwood - in a way for me Torchwood never went away because it always lives in my head, really. The chance to take those characters, take Eve Myles's character Gwen Cooper and obviously Captain Jack, played by John Barrowman. It's their fourth year of stories now, it's kind of like they have become modern legends, I love that. And I think people of Wales have enjoyed it, everyone's in on the story, they're kind of in on the fun of it all, it's great to keep going.

And on what he'll do afterwards:

It's interesting as to how long I can stay in the science fiction world. Personally I think I'm coming to the end of it now and I've saved the world and blown up the world too many times, and I hope I leave Torchwood in rude health, and then I'll probably move onto something else then

It's time to write something just where people talk in kitchens, at least for me. But I hope we literally leave the franchise in in a very strong position that other writers come in and take it over.

You can watch the full interview online.

As reported earlier in the week, actor William Thomas returns to Torchwood playing Gwen's father Geraint. Russell T Davies confirmed in his interview (above) that Gwen's mother Mary is indeed back too, with actress Sharon Morgan reprising her role.

Since her previous appearance in Something Borrowed, like Thomas she has appeared in both Belonging (Nancy) and Alys (Lisabeth)!
Another member of the cast spotted at filming over the weekend was Ian Hughes (pictured); this was confirmed by his Spotlight listing as playing a character named Ralph Finch; the actor has played roles in Holby City, Casualty, Gavin and Stacey and Robin Hood, and is also a voice-over artist and drama coach.

Two other supporting actors recently mentioned their upcoming appearances online: Martin James Fox reported on Facebook: "Look out for me, as an extra in a police uniform being for the Monday evening filming. Am excited about the prospect of 'spectacular action'"; Graham Burton revealed his rendezvous with the show via Twitter: "I'm travelling down to Cardiff on Monday - filming Torchwood early Tuesday!"

Californian actor's workshop The Actor's Key have reported that Hymnson Chan is a co-star on the show; the actor/stuntman has appeared in Greek and performed stunts in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The Internet Movie Database has also listed Brian Guest appearing in the show as Alexander Peterssen, and Denny Torich as "Prison Guard".

With the first three weeks of the shoot now completed and the fourth week well under way, information on the production team involved with the shoot has slowly emerged. Russell T Davies is, of course, the brainchild behind the series, and he is an Executive Producer alongside Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter, plus Vlad Wolynetz on the BBC Worldwide front. Producer in the US is Kelly Manners (Dollhouse, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and his UK counterpart is the previously reported Brian Minchin (who previously helmed The Sarah Jane Adventures); line producer in the UK is Debbi Slater (who most recently worked on the BBC's continuation of Upstairs Downstairs).

Directors currently assigned are Bharat Nalluri (Spooks, Hustle) for episode one and Bill Gierhart (Sons of Anarchy, The Shield) for episode two; Director of Photography is Nathaniel Goodman (Heroes). Production design is by Gregory Melton (The Walking Dead) in the US and Ed Thomas (the original Torchwood designer!) in the UK. Visual Effects are supervised by Eric McAvoy (True Blood, CSI).

Costumes are handled by Shanwa Trpcic (Dollhouse) in the US with Alana Stone (fashions), with the UK side handled by Lindsay Bonaccorsi with Maria Franchi (both old hand with Doctor Who). Makeup comes under the purvue of Todd McIntosh (Detroit 1-8-7, Pushing Daisies) in the US and Claire Pritchard Jones (Sherlock, Gavin and Stacey in the UK.

Other UK crew include Gareth Skelding (Location Manager), Paul Davies (Production Unit Manager), Sam Baker (Production Co-Ordinator), and James North (design), plus practical effects from Danny Hargreaves and Real SFX.

The writers of the show are currently known to be Russell T Davies (1/10), Doris Egan (2), Jane Espenson (3,5,7,8), Ryan Scott (8), and John Shiban (6). The writers for two episodes (4,9) are currently unknown.

(The Doctor Who News Page will shortly be launching a full series summary for the show)

Bharat Nalluri talks Torchwood

Wednesday, 2 February 2011 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Torchwood returned to its origins yesterday with filming taking place at various locations in Cardiff Bay. During a quiet moment, fan Chris Williams (aka Twitter's TheTimeKill) was able to have a chat with Director Bharat Nalluri about the show.

Director Bharat Nalluri with Chris Williams
I caught up with Bharat near Sergeant Andy's police station at a converted bank in Bute Street, Cardiff. I took the chance of having a few words with him before Andy delivered his lines in front of a full-sized movie camera in the street.

I started by asking Bharat where he was from. He has a curious accent, some sentences sound pure American, or possibly Canadian, but at other times, he sounds more non-descript. I ws wrong - he's not an American, but a Brit, from Newcastle. He was born in India, lived for most of his life in the English North-East, and moved back and forth to the US to work on shows such as Buffy, and in the UK, Life on Mars, Spooks, Hustle and now Torchwood. It's clear that he is a major, top-rated director - and that Torchwood is well and truly in competent and safe hands.

We spoke about Children of Earth. I said that it was, in my opinion, it was excellent drama, but perhaps too close the the edge. I added that for my personal tastes, it was actually too dark, and wondered whether Miracle Day would be in the same style. Bharat smiled, and said that the 'edginess' came from Russell (RTD), and that would never change. There definitely some bleak or 'heavy' scenes, but that the show was balanced by some really light and very funny moments. He added that some of the humour in the show was at the expense of the American audience, who were believed to be 'naive' about Wales and Welshness... and was primarily meant for us in the UK. Should indeed be fun!

I was curious as to whether the show would be toned down for an American audience, as US TV has very strict codes of 'propriety' - with swearing, lewd behavior, etc pretty much taboo. Again, Bharat was reassuring. The network Torchwood are working with is Starz: a cable TV channel with a US-wide reputation for edginess and a 'gritty', no-holds barred approach to what can be shown. He quoted Spartacus as an example of one of their shows and said that Torchwood was RTD's baby. It would be just the same as ever, cheeky, occasionally rude, perhaps steamy - and very reflective of what we had enjoyed in Torchwood in the past. Bharat made it very clear that Russell would not tone Torchwood down - and that he was still completely in charge of the show. This really was very good to hear!

A fellow fan (@ohaiadam, a professional V-logger) put it to Bharat that being based in America, Torchwood would lose its Welshness, and become just another show. Yet again, the reply was encouraging. We were reminded that Torchwood was "entirely RTD's baby" - and that Russell was intensely proud of being Welsh, immensely fond of his country, and all it had to offer. The show would continue to be very Welsh ("Gwen will see to that!"). RTD had previously told me that Wales was such an enormous place, and that he'd never run out of stunning, beautiful locations'

Bharat emphasized that although only two weeks of filming was (initially) planned to happen in Wales, we would be amazed how 'Welsh' the show would be. A fantastic number of scenes would be shot here, and often, an external scene shot in Wales would cut to a studio scene filmed in LA. Wales would be 'much more apparent' than we were expecting, and "Russell wouldn't allow it any other way". He added that they'd be returning to Wales for more filming later.

Reassured and happy with Bharat's comments, I tried a question I knew I wouldn't get an answer to. Would any of our favorite characters die in Miracle Day? Bharat again smiled, and said he couldn't comment. Would people who loved Gwen and Rhys be happy after episode 10? Again - Bharat said his contract forbade him to speak.. I couldn't guess anything from his body language, so I guess (gladly, I suppose) we'll have to wait and see!

Bharat added that Torchwood really was going to be a cracking show - and a massive production too. He then posed for photographs and did a stack of autographs, before being dragged away by (producer) Brian Minchin, who quietly said "Can I have my director back now!"

Doctor Who: casting and filming update

Tuesday, 1 February 2011 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Agency Gordon & French have listed Danny Sapani as appearing in episode seven of the next series, playing a character named Colonel Manton.

The actor appeared in The Bill as Oscar Danniels in the Witness strand, and more recently played probation officer Tony Morecombe in Misfits and Gustavus Vassa in an episode of Garrow's Law.

Gordon & French have also listed another actor for episode three, Lee Ross, playing the character "Boatswain".

Ross's Who connections include Mick Mahoney in the recent Moses Jones (featuring Matt Smith), and also as Kenny in Steven Moffat's popular Press Gang of the late 1980s. The actor also had prominent roles as DCI Litton in Ashes to Ashes, and was semi-regular character Owen between 2006 and 2009 in Eastenders.

As reported last week, work has commenced on episode three, directed by Jeremy Webb, and the cast and crew have descended upon the harbour of Charlestown near St. Austell, Cornwall, where they will be filming for a few days.

Production base, more vehicles yet to arrive apparently:

4 or 5 guys were in the process of putting up the black awning which was massive and shrouded almost the entire eastern harbour wall (presumably to cover up whatever normally resides behind it). Another half dozen or so guys were unloading props onto the first ship on the western side of the harbour.

A title has now been attributed to episode seven, thanks to the Spotlight entry for guest star Simon Fisher-Becker. As with others that have emerged over the last few months, this may only be a working title for the episode (see the series summary for details).

Finally, another director for the series has been identified as Nick Hurran, at least according to details listed under Production Designer Michael Pickwoad; Hurran recently directed the remake of The Prisoner, and also directed the pilot episode for The Last Detective (starring former Doctor, Peter Davison). He joins fellow director Adam Smith in being listed but having not been seen in action thus far - episodes 8,10-13 have yet to be recorded.

Doctor Who: casting and filming roundup

Friday, 28 January 2011 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Casting directory Spotlight have listed Annabel Cleare as appearing in episode seven of the currently filming series of Doctor Who. Primarily in theatre, she has also appeared on television, mainly in documentary style programmes such as JFK Revealed for Channel 4 and The Real Atlantis for BBC2, and also a Home Fries Chips commercial!

The actress confirmed the role on Twitter, which also indicated that her young son Henry would also be appearing in the episode, though she described their roles as 'small'! Henry himself has appeared in a number of commercials and short films.

Another tweet from Tuesday this week revealed a further piece of casting news: "My friend says her twins did their filming for Doctor Who today and were held by Matt. Bless. She said they'll feature strongly"

The Sun reported this morning that actor Hugh Bonneville would be appearing in the series, appearing as a "Pirate Captain". The Downton Abbey actor subsequently confirmed this himself later when he tweeted:
09:02 No idea what the weather's like on earth this day in 2011
because I am elsewhere, IN THE ACTUAL TARDIS ACTUALLY
Though he joked about with Downton Abbey co-star Dan Stevens, he also confirmed the usual policy that guest stars follow when working on Doctor Who!
12:05 *pokes head out of Tardis* What's going on here?
Dan you HAVE to do this one not that one. *shuts door*
13:09 *serious face* won't be posting pics from set or revealing
story so pls don't ask. Am guesting as pirate Cpt
14:38 Secrecy is so tight on this show that the crew wear
black balaclavas and only answer to the name Colin.

The BBC's Doctor Who site included a bit more on the casting, including comments from the actor himself:
When I was a boy THAT music and Jon Pertwee's Doctor had me peeking out from behind the sofa every Saturday night. All these years later I am thrilled to be appearing in the new series. Although the Pirate's fears and demons are different to those of the young lad who watched through his fingers, they are no less vivid and terrifying; this new adventure is not for the faint-hearted.

Update: Hugh Bonneville's character has been named as 'Avery' on his Gordon and French CV, and this also reports the director for this episode (three) as Jeremy Webb (a regular director on Merlin).

The Spotlight entry for Dan Starkey has been updated to reflect him playing a character named Strax in the Peter Hoar-directed episode (seven); as reported previously a Sontaran was spotted during filming a fortnight ago, so it seems likely that Starkey has once again donned the blue armour!

Meanwhile, a familiar face was spotted at the Millennium Stadium last week, with actor Simon Fisher-Becker - who previously appeared as Dorium in The Pandorica Opens - seen once again in blue, and believed to be reprising his role.

Meanwhile filming for the series has continued for episodes seven and three, with the cast and crew being spotted at the Millennium Stadium and Laguna Health and Spa in Cardiff centre on Wednesday 20th January, and during the course of this week at the Fillcare Ltd plant (formerly L'Oreal) at Talbot Green, Mid Glamorgan.

Filming has continued on episode seven of the series; though the production team have kept a low profile in recent weeks, a couple of photos have surfaced from filming at Uskmouth Power Station (previously seen representing Battersea Power Station in Age of Steel) on the 13th January, showing some of the signs seen on location. One design of note is the 'octagonal' one that was previously seen in The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone last year, symbol of the Clerics that held River Song prisoner.

Another location related to River also popped up on the 20th January, when production re-surfaced in Cardiff with the base located at the Millennium Stadium; having been used for her prison during The Pandorica Opens, and knowing that Alex Kingston features in the currently filming episode, it seemed possible that the site was being utilised as the Stormcage Containment Facility once again.

The day also saw filming take place at the nearby Laguna Health and Spa on Greyfriars Road:
At Laguna last night, the blue chap was there, along with some soldiers, but they were dressed all in black (including hat), so not UNIT.

Filming at the former L'Oreal plant this week was low-key, until Wednesday saw a note to staff informing them "to expect up to 70 cast and crew tomorrow for DW filming." Subsequent tweets on Thursday indicated that old enemy the Cybermen were on the move!
15:47 Hayley: A cyberman with dreadlocks! Ahhhh... :D Papa... Thank'you! :D
18:33 Anthony: Great day today. They've been filming for Dr Who at work
so lots of cybermen around and also got to meet Karen Gillan who plays
the Dr's assistant Amy Pond. What a lovely person, signed autographs and
chatted. Didn't get to meet Arthur Darvill who plays her on screen partner
Rory Williams as he was busy with the cybermen.
18:38 Hayley: My dad came home and said 'God. A group of cybermen are
so intimidating!' ;) haha!!

Filming continued today:
Cybermen in Pontyclun! Went for a nose and got there just as they were packing up. The only Cybery thing I saw was the suits being packed away. Sadly (?) they looked like the regular Cybus ones. But, Toby Haynes did say on the Confidential for The Pandorica Opens that they were originally going to have new Cybermen in the episode, but only new heads. Makes sense, really. There's only so much you can do the redesign a suit, and with a new head, spray of silver, and covering up of the Cybus logo, they'd look new.

Also saw Paul Kasey. No sign of main cast. And lots of the greenscreen. No photos unfort.

Next week, it has been reported that the cast and crew travel out of Wales to Cornwall, descending on the coastal town of St. Austell and filming in the Charlestown area of the town.

The Cornwall Guide describes it as:
Charlestown is an amazingly pristine, unspoilt example of a late Georgian working port. It was constructed between 1791 and 1801 by Charles Rashleigh, a member of the local landowning family, in reponse to the growth of the growth of the local mining industry. Originally built to export copper and import coal, it was soon being used for the export of China Clay
Bearing in mind the character played by Hugh Bonneville has been called both the Pirate Captain and Avery, a Georgian port might indicate a historical setting for episode three involving real-life pirate Henry Every (aka John Avery)!

Torchwood: News Roundup

Thursday, 27 January 2011 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Casting directory Spotlight have listed a few more actors cast for the currently filming Torchwood: Miracle Day.

First up, actor William Thomas is returning to the show playing Gwen's father Geraint Cooper - he previously appeared in series two's Something Borrowed at Gwen's wedding alongside Sharon Morgan as Gwen's mother Mary (at the time of writing she is not currently credited for filming). Interestingly his entry says that he is a "Series Regular".

Since his previous appearance in Torchwood, Thomas continued his role as Will James in Belonging, and in other Welsh series including Gari Tryfan, Ar Y Tracs and Alys.

Lena Kaur is credited as Dr. Alicia Patel; the actress is best known as regular character Leila in Hollyoaks, and most recently appeared in the television show Speechless and film The Endz.

Actor Danny Szam is listed as a character named Surveillance; he has appeared in Channel 4's Skins, and had a flurry of medical-related appearances in Doctors, The Royal and Casualty!

Finally, actor Daniel Adegboyega is listed as playing a guard in the series; his CV includes appearances in Spooks and The Bill.

Writer Jane Espenson confirmed that the ten episodes of the series will have individual episode titles (like series one and two). She is penning episodes three, five, seven and eight (the latter co-written with Ryan Scott), with Russell T Davies responsible for the series opener and finale, Doris Egan handling episode two, and John Shiban for episode six. This just leaves episodes four and nine to be revealed.

Episode one is being directed by Bharat Nalluri, and episode two by Bill Gierhart; both are working with The Sarah Jane Adventures producer Brian Minchin for filming in the United Kingdom, which itself sees expanded filming taking place over the next few weeks (with filming believed to cover several episodes for the series).

This week has seen varied locations being used, including Cardiff International Airport and Rhossili Bay. The South Wales Evening Post caught up with Russell T Davies at the latter location, where he spoke about bringing the show back into the UK:
There are so many good locations in Wales, and I love coming back to Swansea. I'm immensely proud of where I'm from and quite like the opportunity to show places like Rhossili to the world.

It's a sort of national trait of Wales that we tend to be very proud of where we are from, yet don't sing our praises enough.

I'm quite excited that Torchwood will hopefully introduce Wales to people who have never seen it before.

There have been a number of episodes of Doctor Who and Torchwood which have been filmed in Swansea, and I plan to keep that up. I don't think I'll ever run out of places to film here because there are so many great ones.

One thing I've quite enjoyed is the little jokes in the show about Brits feeling lost in America, and Americans not knowing where Wales is.

A more detailed report on filming will appear on the Doctor Who News Page at the weekend.
