TARDIS app Released

Friday, 13 December 2013 - Reported by Marcus
Following the successful launch of the Official Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver App which topped the entertainment charts in Australia, New Zealand, US and UK on its release, BBC Worldwide Australia and New Zealand and Australian developer Useless Creations have released a second app with the latest augmented reality technology putting you in control of the TARDIS.

Virtual TARDIS mode allows you to use the motion of your device to land and take off, fly the TARDIS in the real world or move fast to enter the time vortex. In Real World mode you can see the TARDIS spinning above you, or touch the ground where you'd like it to land and watch it materialise before your eyes. Rotate and scale the TARDIS to line up the perfect photo, then take and share your images on Twitter #DoctorWho #VirtualTARDIS, Facebook or Flickr.

There are six different models of the TARDIS to choose from, including the original one from the '60s, which turns everything black and white, just like the early Doctors' adventures. Tap the TARDIS to open the door and see inside.

Helen Pendlebury, Head of Brand Licensing and Live Entertainment, said:
This latest fun app puts the TARDIS in fans' pockets, enabling them to fly to the planet Skaro – or just to the end of the garden path. And with the photo-sharing facility we look forward to seeing where the TARDIS ends up!
The app is available from iTunes.
Doctor Who News is also available, now with access to the Doctor Who Guide, free for the iPhone/iPad.

Say What You See app game created

Wednesday, 11 December 2013 - Reported by John Bowman
A Doctor Who game app has been launched with 150 puzzles across three canvases.

Created by UK-based app developer Big Ideas Digital and published by BBC Worldwide, Say What You See consists of cryptic pictures suggesting words or phrases that can be characters, gadgets, episode titles, or monsters. Solving a puzzle rewards players with a trivia-filled fact file, including exclusive never-before-revealed secrets.

Available on iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire, it boasts retina-quality screens that have been painted by ex-Rare game studio concept artist Ryan Firchau, with the artwork taking players on a journey through three iconic Doctor Who locations: Gallifrey, Totter's Lane, and inside the TARDIS.

Big Ideas Digital director Jon Hamblin said:
There have been many Doctor Who games in the past but this is the first that covers the entire span of the show's history, referencing episodes, characters and monsters from every one of its 50 years. If this isn't the first game to appeal to old-school, hard-core fans just as much as younger fans of modern Who then I'll eat my Tom Baker scarf!
The answer to the above example is given here:
Captain Jack [Cap, Tin, Jack]

There are hints for every puzzle and a sonic screwdriver function that lets players scan the canvas for hidden hint coins, plus a "Stuck" button that reveals a handful of answers to get started.

Game download links: iOS, Android, Kindle.

New Doctor Who game in the works?

Friday, 20 September 2013 - Reported by Chuck Foster
A new game based around Doctor Who would appear to be in the works, as least as suggested in the latest official Doctor Who Consumer Panel survey to be undertaken by fans.

Having been asked about interests in Doctors, companions and monsters, and thoughts on gaming platforms, a section of the survey is then dedicated to questions about how participants felt about a new game that could be played on smartphones and other media:

We are thinking of making a Doctor Who game which would be available to play on smartphones/tablets. Please read the description of the game shown below:

"For the first time ever fans of Doctor Who will be able to interact with fifty years of beloved adventures, allies and enemies. Travel backwards through the Doctor’s timeline to face his deadliest foes and meet his most memorable companions. Through this epic adventure you will build a formidable army of companions, allies and past regenerations to take down a foe whose actions threaten to rip the universe apart."

Based on the above description, how interested would you be in playing this game when it is released?

Some provisional "mock up" images were also presented for opinion:

Doctor Who Game images

Participants are then invited to suggest a name for the game from the following possibilities, and also to provide their own!
  • Legends of the Doctor
  • Legacy of Monsters
  • Adventures with Monsters
  • Puzzle War
  • Friends and Monsters
  • Puzzle Battle
  • Doctor Who: Legacy.

The inclusion of the word "when" in the statement certainly suggests that a game is planned and may have already entered development, but there is no indication as to when it is likely to be released, however. More news as and when it becomes available.

The Eternity Clock released for PS Vita

Wednesday, 10 October 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
After several months delay, BBC Worldwide have finally launched Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock for the Sony PS Vita platform; the game is available to download now from the US and European PS Stores.

The Eternity Clock The Eternity Clock The Eternity Clock

BBC Worldwide's executive producer Simon Harris explained via the Playstation Blog how the Vita version improves on the original PlayStation release:
The PS Vita version of the game will have several new features that we’ve been working on the past few months. One example are the new PS Vita controls, which utilize the combination of the dual analog stick controls and PS Vita's touchscreen features, enabling players to switch between the more traditional controls and the ability to tap the screen to affect the action. All of the puzzle games within the game have been reworked to make full use of touchscreen controls as well.

We're also tapping into "near", PS Vita's geo-social service. Using "near", players can collect “Gallifreyan” medals while playing through the adventure and then drop them in a GPS location for other players to collect. Grow your collection while searching for other players’ medals!

We'll also support PS Vita's Cloud Save option for players who own Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock on both PS3 and PS Vita in the form of "Continuation Play." This enables you to save your game on one device and load it on the other, which means you can continue your adventure while you’re on the move with your PS Vita and then pick it back up from the same place at home on your PS3.

The game, featuring Matt Smith as the Doctor and Alex Kingston as River Song, was originally released for the Sony PS3 back in May, with Matt commenting on the experience:
I enjoyed working on the game. The people I worked with were very thorough, very detailed and very nice. It's a bit like doing Automated Dialogue Recording for a television project, where you re-record some lines after filming. It's a technique I've used before and one that I enjoy.

You've got to make the voiceover and the character on screen match somehow. Obviously you're not moving as you speak and so you've got to apply your voice to the movements of a motion captured character, which can take a couple of attempts sometimes. But it's a rewarding challenge.

Doing the motion capture was really interesting. It's something I've always been intrigued by and wanted to learn about; you get to add the voice and see it all come to fruition. Seeing yourself as a computerised character is one of those rare moments that only happens when you're involved in a show like Doctor Who.

A PC version of the game is still in development.

BAFTA Cymru Triumph For Gunpowder Plot Game

Sunday, 30 September 2012 - Reported by John Bowman
The Doctor Who Adventure Game The Gunpowder Plot triumphed at this evening's BAFTA Cymru Awards.

It won the Digital Creativity And Games prize, with the combined effort of the BBC Wales Interactive Team, Sumo Digital, and Revolution Software beating Becoming Human and Coridor 5.

The Impossible Astronaut, which opened Series 6 of Doctor Who, was beaten to the Television Drama title by Shirley, the BBC Two production directed by Colin Teague and with music by Ben Foster that charted the rise to fame of Shirley Bassey, and the Series 6 finale The Wedding of River Song, which was up for a gong in the Sound category, was trumped by the Matthew Rhys film Patagonia. The Gunpowder Plot gathers Steam

Friday, 7 September 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Legacy Games have announced their intention to make the fifth instalment of the Doctor Who Adventure Games, The Gunpowder Plot, available through Valve's Steam gaming platform.

The company, which sells the games outside the United Kingdom (where they are free to TV licencees via the BBC) have listed the item on the Steam website, which requires its community to 'greenlight' the item to be made available through the gaming system.
