Australia Video/Audio Update

Wednesday, 25 June 2003 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
Australian fans (and, likely, New Zealanders as well), take note: Doctor Who at the BBC, the anniversary audio boxed set, will be out in November, according to a brochure included in the latest video release ("Meglos"), while the Power of the Daleks/Evil of the Daleks set is due in December. The Marco Polo CD is due in early 2004, as are three video releases: The Horns of Nimon, Invasion of the Dinosaurs and The Reign of Terror. Curiously, the brochure also lists two early 2004 audio releases that have yet to be announced by BBC Worldwide (for anywhere): The Wheel in Space and The Underwater Menace (though, to be fair, these are two of the final releases and were likely for 2004 anyway!) Australia Misses the Doctor, Too!

Wednesday, 28 May 2003 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
Reporter Paul McIntyre from Australia's ABC Online recently took to the streets of Hobart, Tasmania to find out what television series Australians miss the most... and at the top of their list, "Doctor Who". "Many people told Paul they probably wouldnÆt watch their favourite missed show should it ever be returned to TV," says the article, "for fear of ruining their special memories. It was felt however that programmes such as æDoctor WhoÆ, æThe GoodiesÆ and æAstro BoyÆ should be made available to entertain future generations." The full article can be read by clicking here. Australia/New Zealand Video Difficulties

Roadshow Video has apparently issued a recall of the newly-released "The Tenth Planet" video, after fans noticed that the tape was missing the reconstructed episode 4. Only the three complete episodes of the serial were included on the tape. Further investigation reveals that Roadshow may have ordered the wrong tapes from the UK video library. This is apparently the second recent instance of an alteration to a BBC video; the Louise Jameson Multi-Coloured Swap Shop interview was previously omitted from the Australia/NZ release of "The Face of Evil". Paul Scoones of New Zealand fandom recently said on the Restoration Team forum: "Roadshow were sent two masters of [Face of Evil] tape, one with the interview, and one without. They were informed by the BBC that this was because the interview clip had not yet been cleared and that they would be instructed which tape to use when and if the clearances were obtained. The go-ahead was given to use the interview, Roadshow printed up the covers stating that the interview was included, but made a mistake and used the wrong master. Obviously the situation is somewhat different with "The Tenth Planet" as there was of course no uncertainty as to whether a 3 or 4 part version would be released, but Roadshow were apparently completely unaware they'd duplicated an incomplete master tape and it's now costing them to perform a recall and reduplication. It doesn't seem at all likely that they deliberately removed the fourth episode (they didn't remove the reconstructed episodes of The Ice Warriors, so why now?)." Also, the clip of Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant from "Saturday Superstore" included in the UK version of "Attack of the Cybermen," the companion video in the two-tape box/tin set, was not included in the Aus/NZ release, most likely due to rights.

What video releases are forthcoming?

In the UK, The Happiness Patrol was released in August. A boxed set of the E-Space Trilogy (Full Circle, State Of Decay, and Warriors' Gate) is on tap for October. 1998 will see Timelash (January), Battlefield (March, extended with previously unseen material), The Mind Of Evil (May, in black and white, but including five minutes recolorised from the extant color American clip, added at the end of the tape), The Horror Of Fang Rock (July) and Planet Of Fire (September). In November 1998, The Ice Warriors will be released as a two-tape pack. The missing episodes two and three will be replaced by short bridges making use of soundbites, narration, photos, telesnaps and graphics. The tape will be dovetailed by a 45-minute-long documentary on the junking of Sixties and Seventies episodes and the search now underway across the globe. This will also feature virtually every existing clip from incomplete episodes which could possibly be incorporated. It was previously thought that Colony In Space would also be released in 1998, but according to Restoration Team member Steve Roberts, it is not presently scheduled for release.

As part of a BBC-oriented Christmas campaign, CBS/FOX will be releasing the E-Space trilogy boxed set in North America in October. Further video releases will not take place until 1998 (possibly February), at least partly due to the fact that CBS/FOX has nearly caught up with BBC Video and wishes to have a little more choice in what they can offer next. On the Australian front, The King's Demon's/The Five Doctors Special Edition boxed set was released in July with a free deck of Doctor Who playing cards (not a trading card as was previously reported). Oddly, in New Zealand, the two were released on individual tapes (rather than as a boxed or double set), although, contrary to previous reports, the two were not the same price. The Leisure Hive is now available in Australia and will be out in New Zealand in November (though it is already available in some locations). The restored The War Machines is due in January in Australia.
