BBC Store: The Beginner's Guide To Doctor Who

Friday, 4 December 2015 - Reported by Chuck Foster
BBC Store: The Beginnners Guide to Doctor Who (Credit: BBC Worldwide)The BBC Store has organised a new collection of Doctor Who stories, The Beginner's Guide to Doctor Who, with the aim to introduce the series to new fans of the show. The collection is a selection of stories from throughout the show's history:
From the new era, fan favourite Blink starring Carey Mulligan introduces the terrifying Weeping Angels, Doctor Who’s return to BBC One in Rose with Billie Piper and Christopher Eccleston, and many of the much loved classic stories including Spearhead from Space, Genesis of the Daleks and Earthshock are all packaged together to give new fans an introduction to the longest running Sci Fi drama in the world.
BBC Store’s Simon Farquhar said:
Some people might feel a bit overwhelmed by Doctor Who and not know where to start exploring it. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering about the history of the Whoniverse and how it evolved, then our Beginners’ Guide is here to help audiences navigate time and space across the most imaginative world television has ever created. We’ve tried to select stories that exemplify the different eras the show has gone through, from the eerie black and white beginnings to the Gothic horror of the mid-Seventies and the fast-paced furore of today’s series . It’s been difficult with so many episodes and Doctors to choose from, but this collection is a fun way to begin exploring Doctor Who.
The complete list of stories in the package are: The Tomb of the Cybermen, Spearhead from Space, Genesis of the Daleks, The Talons of Weng-Chiang, Earthshock, Rose, Blink, The Day of The Doctor, and Mummy on the Orient Express. Keen-eyed readers will note that the very first story An Unearthly Child isn't available either in this set or on the BBC Store in general at present, which has been down to ongoing rights issues; BBC Worldwide told us:
The first story is a regrettable omission but yes, it still is not cleared.

Thursday, 5 November 2015 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The BBC have launched the BBC Store, a new online "shop" aiming to open up a wealth of archive material, both old and new, to viewers in the United Kingdom to "buy and keep" digitally.

Marcus Arthur, MD of BBC Worldwide & ANZ, said:
We want BBC Store to do for digital ownership what BBC iPlayer did for catch up. BBC Store makes digital ownership really easy for audiences and means that we can begin opening up the incredible BBC television archive.

Dan Taylor-Watt, Head of BBC iPlayer said:
The launch of BBC Store coincides with a significant milestone in the evolution of BBC iPlayer: the addition of ‘Places to buy’ links, enabling users to discover programmes to buy and keep and to watch BBC Store purchases back on iPlayer.

Doctor Who Game Maker launched

Tuesday, 15 September 2015 - Reported by Harry Ward
The BBC has launched Doctor Who: Game Maker as part of the corporation's Make it Digital season. The game will allow fans to create their own adventures by manipulating the Doctor Who universe. Characters which can be used in game include the Doctor, Clara, Missy, and various monsters and alien worlds from the series. Users can create their own game from scratch or use an existing template which includes classic game formats with a Doctor Who twist, including platform games, puzzles and racers.

Strax will be able to offer advice by showing users how to get started, change a game’s physics to make things fly, animate objects and even add special effects.

Games can be created on tablet devices and desktop computers, and there will soon be an Arcade area which will let people play games on mobile devices.

Jo Pearce, Creative Director, BBC Cymru Wales Interactive, says:
The Doctor Who Game Maker rounds off a big year for Doctor Who as part of BBC Make it Digital. Our game introduced our audiences to coding basics, Mission Dalek competition encouraged fans to create stories using digital technology, and now we’re giving fans the chance to make their own games. It’s hugely exciting and we can’t wait to see what people come up with.

Global iPlayer to Close

Wednesday, 13 May 2015 - Reported by Marcus
The global version of the BBC iPlayer is to close next month.

The service, which allows viewers outside the UK to watch BBC programmes, including Doctor Who, for a subscription fee, will cease on 26 June.

The service was available in Western Europe, Australia and Canada, although it never launched in the United States due to conflicts with some Pay TV channels which carry BBC America.

Some of the BBC's best known programmes, including Top Gear and Sherlock were available along with archive shows such as Gavin and Stacey, Fawlty Towers, Planet Earth and classic episodes of Doctor Who.

The closure was expected after BBC Worldwide announced in 2013 it intended to pull support for the Global iPlayer, saying it would instead focus on making material available via the BBC.com website. Users have been notified of the switch-off, and auto-renewing subscriptions are being cancelled.

BBC Worldwide issued a statement today via their website
We would like to thank all of our subscribers for using the service. We are now developing plans to launch new digital services across multiple devices.
