New York event sells out in 20 minutes

Saturday, 18 August 2012 - Reported by Marcus
The demand for tickets for the upcoming New York preview of Asylum of the Daleks has been heavy enough to cause major problems for the ticketing site, where all 800 available tickets were sold in less than twenty minutes.

The special showing will take place at New York’s Ziegfeld Theater on August 25 followed by a live Q&A session with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and executive producer Caroline Skinner. Tickets were sold for the princely sum of 11c, plus a small service charge.

Comic Mix reports that shortly after the ticket release, the purchase system slowed to a crawl, with access severely limited. The site’s customer service number was also jammed as people attempted to see if aborted transactions resulted in a sale or not.

BBC America has apologized that the process didn’t go as smoothly as it could have done but have said they are pleased the event was so popular with fans.

The new Doctor Who series is due to launch on BBC America in early September, but no date has yet been officially confirmed.

Doctor Who episode titles confirmed

Tuesday, 14 August 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The titles of the first five episodes that make up the 2012 mini-season have now been confirmed:
No date has currently been given over when the series will return to television - Steven Moffat has simply reported that it will be "soon!"

Asylum of the Daleks had its press preview tonight, revealing a redesigned title sequence with updated logo and typography for this series. The episode has a running time of 50 minutes. After the preview, a Q&A session took place hosted by BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Richard Bacon, with Steven Moffat, Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and Caroline Skinner. Discussion included possible plans for live events to take place during the course the 50th Anniversary year, and that Matt Smith is contracted for further episodes.

The preview was attended by cast and crew, including 1980s co-star Nicola Bryant, who said: "fabulous opening, secret weapon is a big surprise, laughed & cried & held my breath! LOVEIT". The BBC have also published some photos from the evening.

Steven Moffat also featured as a guest on Richard Bacon's afternoon show, where the two discussed several subjects including the multitude of Daleks in the first episode and the history of the police box; however, Moffat refused to be drawn over the broadcasting plans for the series next year, or whether there would be a multi-Doctor story or not! However, he did confirm that an episode would be broadcast on the 50th Anniversary day itself.

Talking about the show's iconic status, he said:
It's an awful lot of work, but I can't complain about that because yes, it's everything I've ever wanted to do - anything anyone would want to do! People come onto our show, they want to go to the props department, they want to go and see the TARDIS, they want to go and see the set, it's not like being on any other show - it's like a privileged state visit or something, it's special!

At times it seems to be composed of icons, the Daleks are iconic, the police box, bizarrely, is iconic, the sonic screwdriver, all those things everyone recognises.
The full interview can be listened to via the BBC iPlayer (from 51:20) until the 21st August, in the DailyBacon BBC Podcast until 14th September, and a clip has also been made available via BBC News.

The Martian Chronicle

Monday, 6 August 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
NASA has announced that its latest mission to Mars, the Curiosity Lander, successfully touched down early today. This mission - the most ambitious to date - aims to comprehensively search for evidence that life once existed on the Red Planet, seeking to locate the basic building blocks necessary to enable microbial life to evolve. The Lander will explore Gale Crater plus a nearby three-mile-high mountain that previous missions have indicated consists of sediments rising from the crater's floor.

Life and the Waters of Mars:

The search for life on Mars has been an inspiration for centuries. In the 18th century astronomer William Herschel believed that there was active life on the planet, with a viable atmosphere that included clouds. This continued throughout the 19th century, with Richard A. Proctor 'mapping' seas, islands, and inlets, and then Giovanni Schiaparelli mapping what were to become known as the 'canals' on Mars, as described by Percival Lowell.

The romantic notion of life on Mars continued throughout the 20th century, though as the years progressed further observations led to the belief that the planet was now lifeless, with only the canals as proof that intelligent beings had indeed lived there. Then, in 1976, the Viking 1 orbiter beamed back an image in the Cydonia region that startlingly resembled a face, leading many to think that the final proof had indeed been found! However, several return visits during the past decade have presented higher-definition imagery revealing that sadly this was merely an illusion.

Of course, for life to have existed, water too needs to have been present. The earlier 'observations' of clouds, seas, and of course canals had all suggested that it was abundant on Mars, at least at some point, and missions such as the Mariner 9 space orbiter, which reached Mars in November 1971, continued to support that theory with what appeared to be dry river beds. It wasn't until the Viking landings and their images of a barren landscape that the idea of finding life-supporting water on the planet dwindled.

However, the past decade has generated renewed optimism for finding evidence of life, with the polar icecaps identified as containing huge ice deposits. Herschel's original ponderings on clouds are even vindicated with observations of cloud formations caused by evaporation in sunlight discovered by the Opportunity mission in 2004.

Mars and Doctor Who:

Being a close planetary neighbour of such interest, it was inevitable that the programme would utilise its potential for drama. The Martians first 'invade' the series during The Ice Warriors, as the discovery of an "armoured giant" in a glacier on Earth leads to the revitalisation of an isolated group of Warriors from the Red Planet. In The Seeds of Death the Doctor fought off an attempt by the aggressive, reptilian-like species to transform Earth into a new home in the mid-21st century. However, by the 25th century the Martians had joined the Galactic Federation and were (mostly) devoted to peace in the galaxy. (The Curse of Peladon/The Monster of Peladon)

During the British space programme's manned landings on Mars, General Carrington developed paranoid delusions after meeting another visiting race on the planet from outside the galaxy. Tricking ambassadors to travel to Earth on the next mission, he kidnapped them and attempted to use their radioactive nature as a weapon to "prove" they actually intended to invade Earth. It was only through the Doctor's negotiations that the Earth avoided being plunged into an intergalactic war! (The Ambassadors of Death)

The Doctor was later forced to travel to Mars itself during the titular Pyramids of Mars as the Osiran Sutekh used him to take his servants to where they could stop the transmissions that imprisoned him on Earth. Many years later Sarah Jane Smith, who had accompanied the Doctor to Mars, had her computer Mr Smith block live transmissions from a NASA mission on the planet before the aforementioned pyramid would be discovered! (The Vault of Secrets)

In the 21st Century series of Doctor Who, the evidence of water on Mars became an inspiration for the 2009 special The Waters of Mars, where the Doctor discovers how 'water' was an entity in its own right that had ultimately subjugated and caused the extinction of other life on the planet.

TARDIS "materialises" at Olympic Opening Ceremony

Saturday, 28 July 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The eyes of the "universe" were focused upon London last night for the Opening Ceremony of the 30th Modern Olympic Games, with some 27 million viewers in the UK alone tuning in to watch a celebration of British iconography, including James Bond escorting the Queen to the Games and Mr Bean in Chariots of Fire. Doctor Who was also represented by the TARDIS materialisation sound effect complementing Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody during the 1970s music section.

An additional segment to feature the theme tune itself had originally been planned but was dropped for timing reasons. However, a video montage did accompany the TARDIS within the Queen track during the technical rehearsal, though it appears to have been dropped for the live ceremony broadcast (available via BBC iPlayer until the 4th August, at about 1h01m10s). Doctor Who's brand manager Edward Russell clarified:
A video montage which very briefly showed all 11 Doctors was approved but we were told it may not be included which was clearly the case.

In Doctor Who lore, of course, the ceremony saw the Doctor himself light the Olympic Flame (Fear Her, 2006). In reality, the Olympic Cauldron (made up of 204 copper petals representing every country competing at the Games) was ignited by seven aspiring young athletes chosen by British Olympic champions.

HadokesonicActor, writer, and comedian Toby Hadoke has penned a sequel to his acclaimed show Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf.

My Stepson Stole My Sonic Screwdriver is to tour on preview before being taken to the Edinburgh Fringe.

Matt Smith bears the Olympic Torch

Saturday, 26 May 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
This morning saw the Olympic Torch Relay commence on Day Eight of its travels around the United Kingdom, kicking off from outside the Norwegian Church at Cardiff Bay - with a familiar face to take on the mantle of bearer! Matt Smith was up bright and early to play his part in the celebratory journey, and spoke on BBC Breakfast about how he felt on his latest role and the crowd that gathered to cheer him on:
It's a great privilege to be involved, I can't quite believe that people have actually turned up, I thought I'd just be carrying it around, waving to the ducks! I'm thrilled that so many people have come out, and it's really nice that the weather's nice - well done weather! I just think it's a wonderful thing anyway, I think the Olympics, the build up, the sense of national focus, with the Euros (Euro 2012) as well, I'm really excited about the summer of sport that we've got ahead, and I think things like this are just wonderful. And the Jubilee! I'm way into this whole sense of national coming together, street parties and things like this.

It's one of those once-in-a-lifetime things, and for me personally to have the privilege of carrying it ... it's one of those rare opportunities that has nothing to do with me and everything to do with the fact that I play the Doctor.

(additional photos thanks to Alun Vega, James Hemery, Andy Davidson; plus a video of Matt starting from H Byrnes)

When asked about his predecessor's carrying the torch before (the Tenth Doctor in Fear Her), Matt commented "I'm pleased I got my turn!"
