The Power of the Doctor achieved an Audience Appreciation Index score of 82.

The appreciation index or AI is a measure of how much the audience enjoyed the programme. The score, out of a hundred, is compiled by a specially selected panel of around 5,000 people who go online and rate and comment on programmes.

The score of 82 is the highest figure Doctor Who has achieved since the same score was recorded against the 2020 series finale The Timeless Children, with the intervening eight episodes of 2021/22 only averaging 76.6.

Jodie Whittaker's tenure saw the audience appreciation index range from its lowest score of 75 for Once, Upon Time to its highest of 83 with her debut story The Woman Who Fell To Earth alongside Rosa, Arachnids In The UK, and the following season's Fugitive of the Judoon.

The overall average for the whole of the 13th Doctor's era of 31 episodes is 79.6.

The next Doctor(s)

Tuesday, 25 October 2022 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The Power of The Doctor: The new Doctor (DAVID TENNANT) (Credit: BBC)

The finale of The Power of the Doctor saw Jodie Whittaker's Doctor regenerate into a surprisingly familiar face in the form of the 10th Doctor David Tennant! The actor was announced as returning back in May 2022 alongside Catherine Tate, reprising her former role as sidekick Donna. At the time showrunner Russell T Davies teased:

Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.

However, with Tennant now revealed to be the 14th Doctor, quite why this has occured and how it will lead into the next Doctor played by Ncuti Gatwa remains a mystery, with Davies commenting:

If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we’ve got plenty more surprises on the way! The path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger and fun! And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We’re giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose!

Three specials have been filmed for the 60th anniversary and are due to be shown in November 2023, with Ncuti Gatwa's first official episode to be broadcast over the following festive period.

100 Years of the BBC

Tuesday, 18 October 2022 - Reported by Nick Salmond

BBC Logo (Credit: BBC)Today marks the 100th anniversary of the creation of the BBC.

The British Broadcasting Company came into existence on 18th October 1922, a private company owned by the leading electronics companies of the day, with a remit to provide radio broadcasts that could be heard on wireless sets manufactured by its owners.

Its first office was at Magnet House near Covent Garden in London. On its creation, it took over control of the already up-and-running Radio 2LO, owned by Marconi, one of the BBC's investors.

Over the next five years, new Radio stations were launched in the major cities of the UK and the BBC soon became part of national life.

On 1st January 1927, the BBC was reborn as a Corporation under a Royal Charter and the British Broadcasting Company became the British Broadcasting Corporation led by its first Director General, Sir John Reith.

Experimental television broadcasts were started in 1929, using a 30-line system developed by John Logie Baird, using Radio frequencies after normal programmes had closed down for the night. A regular Television service started from Alexandra Palace in November 1936, the world's first High Definition Television service.

The outbreak of World War II in 1939 saw Television broadcasts suspended, but Radio continued with the BBC, through its home and overseas services, becoming a vital part of the information war. Winston Churchill delivered 33 major wartime speeches by radio and in 1940, French general Charles de Gaulle, in exile in London as the leader of the Free French, made a speech, urging the French people not to capitulate to the Nazis.

The Power of the DoctorTelevision resumed in 1946, with the BBC having a monopoly of the airwaves until the arrival of ITV in 1955. Almost everything broadcast was live, including drama, with very limited ability to record items in advance.

When Doctor Who was first broadcast, on 23rd November 1963, there were still only two television channels available in the UK. A third arrived in 1964 with the launch of BBC Two. Recording was still very elementary, and editing was costly and avoided whenever possible.  Early Doctor Who's were recorded 'as live' onto 2 inch magnetic tape. Many of these early recordings were later wiped for reuse, meaning 97 episodes are missing from the archives.

Colour television arrived towards the end of the 1960s. Doctor Who was made in colour from the start of its seventh season which saw the arrival of the third Doctor.

Doctor Who would be an important part of the BBC One schedule throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The suspension of the series in 1989 was met by many protests from fans around the world.

A TV Movie was made in America in 1996 but was not deemed successful enough to merit a new series.

It was in 2003 that Doctor Who News reported that the BBC would be bringing back the series, under the artistic direction of Russell T Davies. The return in 2005 was spectacularly successful with the series an important part of the BBC schedules ever since. The TV landscape in 2022 is a world away from that when the series launched in 1963 with hundreds of TV stations competing for viewers with hugely well-resourced streaming services.

Doctor Who has been part of the BBC's identity for over half of the BBC's existence and still remains a vital part of the BBC's output.

A special 90-minute episode, the Power of the Doctor, will screen next Sunday, part of the events to mark the 100th anniversary. The story will feature the swan song of the first female Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.

The episode will mark the end of the Chibnall era of the Doctor's adventures and mark the return of Russell T Davies to the helm. It is clear that Doctor Who will be part of the BBC's ethos for many years to come.

We have adventures for the Tenth Doctor in the pipeline and the series has a brand new Doctor to look forward to.  Ncuti Gatwa will be leading the TARDIS team into the BBC's second Century.

The Seventh Doctor's umbrella

Monday, 17 October 2022 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The Seventh Doctor's Umbrella (Credit: Lovarzi)

Lovarzi has announced a new addition to their range of Doctor Who merchandise: the Seventh Doctor's umbrella!

The faithful replica of the Doctor’s question mark umbrella has a large 42-inch black canopy across a strong metal frame with fibreglass shaft and handle – making it strong enough to withstand the wind, rain, and snow of Ice World, Terra Alpha, or plain old Earth…

It comes with a specially designed sleeve emblazoned with red question marks, so it can stay safe and dry, perfect for collectors, cosplayers, casual fans, and everything in between.

The umbrella certainly came in handy: it saved him from a fall in Dragonfire; highlighted his enigmatic persona with that question mark handle; and showed off his cool side as he sauntered away from the Greatest Show in the Galaxy, calmly twirling his brolly beside him as the Psychic Circus exploded!

The Seventh Doctor Umbrella will be available to order from Lovarzi, and they have provided a mailing list for further infomation on its release, which includes a 5% off offer.

Doctor Who: Worlds of Wonder - update

Doctor Who: Worlds of Wonder (Credit: Peter Carr)

National Museums Liverpool has seen a surge in retail sales following the launch of the world premiere of the Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder exhibition.

Revealing the science behind Doctor Who, the exhibition itself landed in Liverpool this May at the World Museum – creating huge demand for memorabilia from the hit TV show. A pop-up Doctor Who store at the city centre venue and online shop has sold more than 11,000 items since it launched – making history for National Museums Liverpool as its fastest selling retail range.

Memorabilia designed especially for the exhibition and classic gadgets are among the most in-demand items, including an exclusive Gallifreyan alphabet artwork.

Karen O’Connor, National Museums Liverpool’s Director of Commercial Enterprises, said:

Bringing the world premiere of the Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder exhibition to Liverpool has been an amazing experience and is proving very popular – attracting fans from around the UK, as well as international visitors to the city. We have created a special Doctor Who shop for the duration of the exhibition and hadn’t anticipated how much demand there would be for exclusive items, classic memorabilia and gadgets. Our retail team have been extremely busy – in our shop and with online sales – it’s made history as our fastest selling range.

Helen Dickey, from the retail team at National Museums Liverpool, added:

Bringing with it nearly 60 years of TV history, Doctor Who spans generations – and it’s been hard to keep up with demand from both kids and adults for many of our products.

As well as hosting the world premiere of the Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder exhibition, National Museums Liverpool’s venues have also starred as the backdrop for 79, following filming at the Museum of Liverpool with cast members John Bishop and Nadia Albina last year.

National Museums Liverpool looks after some of the most visited museums in England outside of London. It relies on funding, as well as membership, donations and income from retail, venue hire, events and filming, to keep its attractions and the work it does in the community running.

Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder has been extended until 6 November at the World Museum. More information on available at liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/doctorwho
