Peter Capaldi in The Complete Shakespeare Walk

Thursday, 18 February 2016 - Reported by Marcus
Peter Capaldi is to feature in a special series of films marking 400 years since the playwright's William Shakespeare's death.

The Complete Walk has been organised by Shakespeare's Globe, the theatre complex based on London's southbank and the location of the 2007 Doctor Who story The Shakespeare Code. The Walk, held over the spring weekend of 23 – 24 April, will feature a series on short films, shown on 37 screens, along a 2.5 mile route on the Thames embankment between Westminster and Tower Bridge.

Each screen will show a ten minute film based on one of Shakespeare's plays, each shot on location in a setting with particular historical and narrative resonance to the story. Capalidi will play the general Titus Andronicus in scenes specially shot in Rome.

Other films include Cleopatra in front of the Pyramids, Shylock in Venice’s Jewish ghetto, Hamlet on the rocks of Elsinore, Henry VIII at Hampton Court Palace and Richard II in Westminster Hall.

Other Doctor Who alumni taking part include Lindsay Duncan in All's Well That Ends Well, filmed in Roussillon; and Meera Syal as Lucetta in The Two Gentlemen of Verona.

After appearing in London, the project will be presented in cities across the UK and internationally, after which the films will be accessible on Globe Player.

A roundup of competitions from Doctor Who News that readers may enter:

The Fourth Doctor Adventures: Wave of Destruction

The fourth Doctor has returned for a new series of adventures alongside Romana and K-9:
A modulated frequency wave cancellation signal isn’t something that the Doctor and Romana expect to detect in 1960s London. But then they don’t expect to find Professor Lanchester, the man who invented it, lying unconscious. Or MI5 investigating. With the help of MI5 Agent Miller, Lanchester’s daughter Jill, and his nephew a pirate radio DJ called Mark, the Doctor, Romana and K-9 investigate. They soon discover that there is more at risk than they imagined, and an alien invasion is about to begin. Can the Doctor identify and defeat the aliens in time? Will Romana manage to find a recombinant transducer before it’s too late? And how will K-9 cope with his new job?

BBC Books: City of Death (paperback)

BBC Books have now published last year's popular novel of fourth Doctor adventure City of Death in paperback:
The Doctor takes Romana for a holiday in Paris - a city which, like a fine wine, had a bouquet all of its own. Especially if you visit during one of the vintage years. But the TARDIS takes them to 1979, a table-wine year, a year whose vintage is soured by cracks - not in their wine glasses but in the very fabric of time itself. Soon the Time Lords are embroiled in an audacious alien scheme which encompasses home-made time machines, the theft of the Mona Lisa, the resurrection of the much-feared Jagaroth race, and the beginning (and quite possibly the end) of all life on Earth. Aided by British private detective Duggan, whose speciality is thumping people, the Doctor and Romana must thwart the machinations of the suave, mysterious Count Scarlioni - all twelve of him - if the human race has any chance of survival. But then, the Doctor's holidays tend to turn out a bit like this.
City of Death (Credit: BBC Books)To be in with a chance to win the novel courtesy of BBC Books, simply answer the following question:
Before the theft of the Mona Lisa, which item in his collection did Count Scarlioni tell his butler Hermann to sell in order to continue to fund Kerensky's research?
Please send your answers along with your name, address and where you heard about the competition (news site, news app, other website, etc.) to comp-citybook@doctorwhonews.net with the subject "Nobody could be as stupid as he seems". The competition is open to UK readers only, closing date 21st February 2016. Only one entry per household will be accepted.

BBC Audio: State of Decay

The first classic novelisation adaptation for 2016 from BBC Audio is the fourth Doctor adventure, State of Decay:
The Doctor, Romana and K9 - and a young stowaway called Adric - are trapped in the alternative universe of E-Space. Seeking help, they land on an unknown planet, and find a nightmare world where oppressed peasants toil for the Lords who live in the Tower. All learning is forbidden: it is a society in a state of decay. What is the terrifying secret of the Three Who Rule? What monstrous creature stirs beneath the Tower, waking from its thousand year sleep? The Doctor discovers that the oldest and deadliest enemy of the Time Lords is about to spring into horrifying action.
Doctor Who and the State of Decay (Credit: BBC Audio)To be in with a chance to win the audiobook courtesy of BBC Audio, simply answer the following question:

Please send your answers along with your name, address and where you heard about the competition (news site, news app, other website, etc.) to comp-wasting@doctorwhonews.net with the subject "The Wasting is ... the Wasting". BBC Audio: The Witch Hunters

BBC Audio's novel adaptations continue with The Witch Hunters, originally released as part of the BBC Books Past Adventures range in 1998:
With the Doctor wanting to repair the TARDIS in peace and quiet, Barbara, Ian and Susan decide to get some experience of living in the nearby village of Salem. But the Doctor knows about the horrors destined to engulf the village, and he determines that they should leave. His friends are not impressed. His granddaughter Susan has her own ideas, and is desperate to return to Salem, whatever the cost. But her actions will lead them all into terrible danger, and cause a tragedy that is already unfolding to escalate out of control.

Doctor Who Series 1 - Most Bought Drama

Tuesday, 16 February 2016 - Reported by Marcus
Doctor Who Series 1 has been named as the most frequently bought drama in the entire 40 year history of BBC Worldwide's Showcase event.

BBC Worldwide is the commercial arm of the BBC, which sells the best British TV shows from the BBC and UK independent producers around the world. Since 1976 it - and its predecessor, BBC Enterprises - has hosted international TV buyers at its own annual sales event, BBC Showcase. The first Showcase took place in a meeting room at The Old Ship Hotel in Brighton on the South Coast, and was attended by 25 buyers. Since then showcase has grown to the world’s biggest single distributor trade fair, regularly attracting more than 700 international buyers.

To celebrate 40 years of Showcase, BBC Worldwide has released the new data based on the number of times a title has been bought rather than the number of territories it was bought by, which shows how series continue to interest broadcasters time and again.

The most purchased drama series has been named as Doctor Who Series 1. Starring Christopher Eccleston as the ninth Doctor and first broadcast in 2005, the series has attracted 629 buyers from countries including Bahrain, Hong Kong, France and Chile.

Doctor Who was one of the titles screened to buyers at the very first Showcase in 1976.

Paul Dempsey, President of Global Markets, said
We are extremely proud of our heritage and back catalogue so it’s fun to look back into the archives and celebrate the enduring appeal of some of our classic shows.

But, at the same time, it’s clear that the priority for today’s audiences is event TV with high-production values so it’s no coincidence that our current best sellers are premium dramas like Doctor Who and Sherlock, high-end entertainment shows like Strictly Come Dancing and Top Gear, and our world-renowned natural history programmes like The Hunt.
The most bought comedy programme is the first series of the classic sitcom Keeping Up Appearances which has been bought 992 times over the forty year period. The most bought natural history title is The Life of Mammals with 958 sales and the most bought factual entertainment series is Top Gear Series 9, broadcast in 2006, which has clocked up 282 sales.

Lethbridge-Stewart: Moon Blink

Tuesday, 16 February 2016 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Candy Jar Books have released further details on the latest book in their Lethbridge-Stewart series, Moon Blink, which has been written by Sadie Miller and due to be published in April.

Written by Sadie Miller
Published by Candy Jar Books, April 2015

July 1969, and mankind is on the Moon. Both the United States
and Soviet Russia have lunar bases, and both are in trouble.

Back on Earth, Anne Travers has learned she is about to be
visited by an old friend from America, Doctor Patricia
Richards. Lance Corporal Bill Bishop is aware
of the visit, and is on hand to meet Richards.

She brings with her a surprise, one which the Americans and
Russians wish to get their hands on. But the only man who can
truly help Anne, Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart, is away in Scotland.

It’s a game of cat and mouse, as Anne and Bishop
seek to protect the life of an innocent baby –
one that holds the secrets to life on the Moon.

The book features a cover from Adrian Salmon, who also provided the artwork for last year's The Schizoid Earth and Mutually Assured Domination. Salmon said:
It was an honour to be chosen to draw Sadie's cover for Moon Blink. We went for something emblematic echoing the great Target covers of yore. I ended up sending two colour versions which Shaun brilliantly combined to make the final cover.
Range editor Andy Frankham-Allen added:
We are delighted with this latest piece of work from Adrian. And this time, not only do we highlight our co-stars Lethbridge-Stewart and Anne Travers, but we get to show the world Lance Corporal Bishop, a fan favourite from three of last year’s titles, now a regular in the series.

For 2016, the range also sees a revamped logo; Shaun Russell, head of publishing says
We wanted to do something different this year, and the revamped logo and background colour reflects that. Colin Howard has done a fantastic job of giving Simon Williams’ original design a bit more weight.

Moon Blink headlines the 2016 series of Lethbridge-Stewart novels, and is available to pre-order from the Candy Jar Books website. It is followed later in the year by The Showstoppers by Jonathan Cooper and The Grandfather Infestation by John Peel, with a further three novels due to be released in the autumn.
