A New K9 Series?

Wednesday, 13 October 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
According to a press release issued during the recent MIPCOM television sales event in Cannes, UK distributor Park Entertainment has teamed with Bob Baker, who wrote many episodes of the original series, to produce The Adventures of K9. Baker, who also wrote Aardman's Wallace & Gromit toon, is working with Park's CEO Jim Howell to pitch the show to UK and international networks. The story follows "a junk space ship led by a cynical old captain and a virtual reality female computer... After finding K9 in an abandoned spacecraft, and picking up an orphaned boy from a passing planet, they become a dysfunctional space-age family." The proposed series would mix live-action and CGI, with K9 - who is "cuddly in a robotic kind of way" - now able to morph into new shapes via a special dog collar. Howell and Baker, now in his late-60s, have attracted interest from networks in Canada and Australia. For the UK, Howell said that "the BBC has some kind of first-refusal" on the spin-off show. "We're aiming at the Dr Who market," said Howell, regarding the show's target demo. "Kids and adults love K9... If you can win both demographics with one show, you're really on to a winner." Park is currently looking to finance the proposed project, including securing a production company partner to make the show. (Thanks to Steve Cole)

THE GALLIFREY CHRONICLES, by Lance Parkin
The Doctor's home planet of Gallifrey has been destroyed. The Time Lords are dead, their TARDISes annihilated. The last in the series of original adventures of the Eighth Doctor.

ISLAND OF DEATH, by Barry Letts

The Doctor and UNIT discover a plot involving government ministers, alien narcotics, and an official cover-up. But can they uncover the truth in time?

FUTURE NOSTALGIA, by Gary Russell
When the Doctor and Mel receive a message about the Lamprey, the Doctor is confused. He's never heard of such a thing. Meanwhile, two strangers are watching every move the Doctor makes...

Another casting news item: Bruno Langley, who played gay teenager Todd Grimshaw on the long-running ITV soap "Coronation Street," will be featured in the new series playing a "mysterious character called Adam," according to today's The Sun. The Sun quotes a 'BBC insider' as saying, "Bruno will be a recurring charcater towards the end of the series. No one is sure yet if Adam is good or bad. Bruno is really chuffed. It's a great break so soon after he left Corrie." It also speculates that Adam could be another love interest for Rose Tyler. The BBC Children's Newsround also reported the story today, noting that he would appear in "an episode" of the new Doctor Who series, not multiple episodes. (Thanks to Paul Hayes, Justin Thomas)

Thursday, 7 October 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
Word today from Broadcast Magazine: the BBC will produce a companion series for the new Doctor Who season, a documentary entitled Doctor Who Confidential. The thirteen-part, half-hour series will feature behind-the-scenes footage and interviews wtih cast members as well as "archive of previous Time Lords" (possibly interviews with prior actors). Mark Cossey, who will executive produce the show, said it would be aimed at a mainstream audience and not just fans; he says, "It will have a very entertaining glow to it," he said. "It won't be discussions of technology. We are going for a bigger audience than that."
