Doctor Who Adventures moves to Panini

Monday, 30 March 2015 - Reported by Anthony Weight
Doctor Who Adventures, issue 354, 2014Doctor Who Adventures, the UK-published magazine aimed at younger Doctor Who fans, is to move publishers to Panini UK from next month, where it will become a stablemate of Panini's existing Doctor Who Magazine.

DWM editor Tom Spilsbury confirmed the news on the Gallifrey Base Doctor Who fan forum this evening, stating that the first Panini issue will appear on the 23rd of April, with an advert to appear in the new issue of DWM due out later this week.

DWA began life in 2006, during the first wave of popular success for the revived Doctor Who, and was initially published by BBC Worldwide, the Corporation's own commercial subsidiary. Like most of Worldwide's magazine output, it was sold off to Immediate Media in 2011, who have published the title until this point. Initially a fortnightly title, its success saw it increased to weekly publication from issue 47.

However, DWA has seen a marked decrease in circulation figures over the past five years, selling an average of just under 20,000 copies per issue in the first half of 2014, as opposed to over 50,000 for the same period in 2010 (see our previous story). It has also decreased in publication frequency from a weekly back to a fortnightly and then a monthly title.

The website DownTheTubes.org has further information on the news, including a preview of the first new-style DWA comic strip. This strip will be drawn by Russ Leach - there is no news yet on whether DWA's long-standing artist John Ross will return to the publication at all.

The DownTheTubes article also confirms that Jason Quinn will take over as editor, with the April 23rd issue being a new issue 1, as opposed to continuing the existing numbering. The current issue of DWA on sale, issue 363, will be the final one to be published by Immediate Media, and will remain on sale until next month.

Latest circulation figures for DWM/DWA

Wednesday, 4 March 2015 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The latest circulation figures for publications have been released by the Audit Bureau of Circulations for the July to December 2014 period, revealing that Doctor Who Magazine has remained stable in its circulation (with only a slight dip of 0.4%), whilst Doctor Who Adventures has seen an improvement in its circulation of some 4.9%.

During the Jan-Jun period last year both publications had suffered in their circulations, with DWM decreasing by some 7% and DWA losing nearly a third of its readers - this period occured as the celebrations of the 50th Anniversary cooled off and no new Doctor Who on the horizon on television until the late Summer. However, breakdown by issues show that both publications saw a huge boost as the series returned (with August's figures for DWM and DWA showing 35,559 and 26,830 respectively). Figures dropped as the series progressed, but improved again by December for the Christmas Special. The full breakdowns can be found by clicking on the relevant linked publication certificate below.

All figures are from the Audit Bureau of Circulations apart from the Jul-Dec 2009 figure for DWM, which is an estimate provided by DWM and included for comparison purposes.
ABC figures for DWM only started being calculated in 2010. Percentages shown are the change on the previous six months.

Overall, the 2014 average for DWM shows that their readership has remained stable, with a less than 1% change; however, DWA has shorn some 22.6% of its readership compared to the previous year (the magazine has now switched from fortnightly to monthly so the next biannual report will reflect the less frequent publication).

DWM's editor, Tom Spilsbury, said:
Everyone at Panini is delighted that Doctor Who Magazine's sales have managed to hold so steady, despite overall sales for the magazine industry dropping once more. It's remarkable that our figures for 2014 were pretty much level with those for 2013, which of course coincided with the 50th anniversary. A huge thanks to all of DWM's loyal readers – we hope you'll stay with us over the coming months, as we've got lots of fascinating stuff to come, before the new series starts in the autumn.

Figures for January-June this year are expected to be released in August.

Thursday, 6 November 2014 - Reported by Harry Ward
Doctor Who Adventures Doctor Who Adventures magazine is moving to a four-weekly publication as of this month. The move comes after poor circulation figures for the magazine were published earlier this year.
