It's Behind You!

Monday, 29 November 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
It's that time of year again when celebrities hoist their skirts to take the stage in the great British Christmas tradition of pantomime! Here is a round-up of those pantos that feature notable names from the world of Doctor Who.

John Barrowman (Captain Jack, Doctor Who/Torchwood)
Aladdin, Glasgow SECC, 11th Dec - 9th Jan

The rip-roaring adventure story of Aladdin will be brought magically to life in a spectacular production starring actor, television presenter and all-round entertainer, John Barrowman, in the title role of Aladdin. The Krankies, synonymous with the great tradition of pantomime in Glasgow, will be appearing alongside John as the Chinese Policemen.

Their talent, combined with John Barrowman’s energy and showmanship together with our amazing visual effects, is set to make Aladdin an unmissable pantomime experience.”

Aladdin has all of the traditional elements of pantomime but with the added surprise of an array of 3D special effects.

Wearing 3D glasses at certain points throughout the show the audience can rub the magic lamp as it appears in front of their nose, summon the magical 3D Genie from his lamp and join Aladdin on a superb magic carpet ride!

Frazer Hines (Jamie McCrimmon, Doctor Who)
Aladdin, Lighthouse Theatre, Kettering, 10th Dec - 26th Dec

When Aladdin arrives at The Lighthouse Theatre in Kettering this pantomime season, expect a fantastic musical Show full of festive family fun in colossal quantities – with bucket loads of boos and hisses, huge doses of heckling ‘he’s behind you’, panto dames, and maybe even a wish or two from the Genie of the Lamp.

Opening on Friday 10th December and continuing until Sunday 26th December, more than 25 festive performances are in store for audience members at The Lighthouse this year. Expect to see a flying magical beast, fantastic dance routines, and superb singing.

Watch out for Aladdin (played by JOSH DUBOVIE, this year’s Eurovision star), defeating the evil Abanazar (played by DAVID VAN DAY – the man we all love to hate!) on his journey from rags-to-riches, winning the heart of the beautiful princess (played by Big Brother star NIKKI GRAHAME). The kids will love Wishee Washee (played by TV favourite FRAZER HINES – Emmerdale & DoctorWho) and the hilarious Chinese policemen including DANIEL FOX (2009 X-Factor finalist).

With a live band and a host of other familiar faces, this year’s pantomime cast promises good old fashioned family entertainment fit for all ages, a trip to The Lighthouse shouldn’t be missed.

Bruno Langley (Adam, Doctor Who)
Aladdin, Buxton Opera House, 11th Dec - 1st Jan

Traditional panto at Buxton Opera House is better than ever this year, with dazzling dance routines, side-splitting comedy and a stellar cast from some of TV’s most popular shows.

There’s a party going on in the backstreets of old Baghdad, where young Aladdin (Bruno Langley from Coronation Street and Dr Who) and his daft brother Wishee Washee (Matthew McVarish from CBeebies’ Me Too!) live with their hard-working mum, who runs the local laundry.

Hitch a ride on a camel and join the fun as Aladdin meets the beautiful Princess Jasmine (Steph Fearon, semi-finalist from Over the Rainbow), discovers a dodgy long-lost uncle and sets out on a perilous quest to seek an ancient lamp, buried deep in a desert cave.

Don’t miss this magical Christmas treat for the whole family!

The modern-day Cybermen were seen to retrace the steps of their 1960s counterparts (The Invasion) along St. Peter's Steps in front of St. Paul's Cathedral, and later crossing the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern. Another promotion saw them boarding a Jubilee Line train, much to the astonishment of travellers!

The publicity photos have appeared on newspaper websites such as the Daily Mail, Metro and Telegraph.

Mike Paternott was on hand to capture the activity at St. Paul's and the Millennium Bridge on Doctor Who's anniversary yesterday:

"Fag Ends and Lollipops"

Wednesday, 17 November 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Bradford's National Media Museum will be running a special event this coming Saturday, 20th November; "Fag Ends & Lollipops" celebrates the work of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, with talks, workshops, and screenings, plus presentations on the work of pioneers Delia Derbyshire and Daphne Oram.

Long-term Doctor Who special-sound editor Dick Mills - who received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bradford last year for services to the British Broadcast media - will be giving a talk from 1:30pm on creating sound effects on Doctor Who and television in general:
I’m really looking forward to the workshop. It’s always fun to visit Bradford and be back among like-minded creative people. We want to show people at the event that you don’t have to be a computer boffin to be able to do the things we used to do – which is just as well since there weren’t many technical aids around when I was working on Doctor Who and we had to do it the hard way, or as best we could.

The event is named in honour of items used to create some of the sound effects, and other composers from the Radiophonic Workshop attending include Roger Limb, Brian Hodgson and Steve Marshall.

Thursday, 11 November 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
As previously reported, yesterday evening saw the annual ceremony to switch on the Cardiff Christmas Lights, this year undertaken by the current TARDIS crew of Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill. The three were on hand to launch the festive period, and were accompanied during the evening by festive music from the soul band Supernatural and Bob the Builder. The celebration was rounded off with a fireworks display.

Matt said:
It's a real honour to be asked to switch on Cardiff's Christmas lights because the city has become like a second home to not only me, but the rest of the Doctor Who production team.

We love filming here in Wales and we even managed to get into the festive spirit extra early this year when filming the Doctor Who Christmas special in August.

Cardiff is a great city and I'd like to thank all of its residents for being so welcoming and accommodating.

    New Eighth Doctor costume revealed

Saturday, 23 October 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Paul McGann is currently in New Zealand, a guest at the Armageddon Pop Culture Expo (Auckland, New Zealand) this weekend. On Saturday he appeared on a panel and revealed what is to be the 'new' costume for the Eighth Doctor.

The costume consists of a double-breasted black Naval jacket, with gold buttons. Part of of the ensemble is a courier pouch bag. However, the shirt and trousers were actually McGann's own and not part of the costume.

Also revealed is a new sonic screwdriver, courtesy of Weta Workshop, the wizards behind the effects on The Lord of the Rings. The screwdriver is similar to the one used by the current Doctor, Matt Smith, but has a wooden handle.

The revision comes some fourteen years since the original Eighth Doctor image was established for the 1996 TV Movie; this is now felt to be a little out of date and the new costume - still a work in progress - is said to be used for future promotional purposes.

No other information in known at present, other than this is an unofficial costume - but it is believed to have the blessing of the BBC.

The TARDIS crew will be materialising in Cardiff in order to mark the city's annual start to the Christmas festivities, with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill all expected to be on-hand to switch on the Christmas Lights.

The ceremony takes place at King Edward VII Avenue, Cardiff Civic Centre, from 7:40pm on Wednesday 10th November.

    Matt Smith:
It’s a real honour to be asked to switch on Cardiff’s Christmas lights because the city has become like a second home to not only me, but the rest of the Doctor Who production team.

We love filming here in Wales and we even managed to get into the festive spirit extra early this year when filming the Doctor Who Christmas special in August.

Cardiff is a great city and I’d like to thank all of its residents for being so welcoming and accommodating.

Nigel Howells, Cardiff Council’s executive member for sport, leisure and culture:
The Christmas lights switch-on has become the traditional start of the festive season in Cardiff, and this year, to celebrate the 10th Winter Wonderland, we welcome another three stellar names from BBC Cymru Wales’ Doctor Who, which has such a strong connection with the city, to help us launch the lights, shopping and attractions.

This isn't the first time the show has been honoured in such a way; David Tennant and Billie Piper turned on the lights for the city back in 2005.
