Torchwood Novels set for January

Monday, 4 December 2006 - Reported by Jarrod Cooper
The BBC is set to release a series of three Tie-In Novels based on its hit series Torchwood. Due out on January 11th, 2007, the novels will be published in the same format as the Doctor Who book series and will carry a similar price tag. The first three releases are:

Slow Decay by Andrew Lane
A friend of Gwen's has recently done an impressive bit of slimming, thanks to a new Cardiff weight-loss clinic with a incredibly simple system, and now Rhys wants to give it a try. Elsewhere in the city, an ordinary woman with superhuman strength and a rapacious appetite attacks a group of teenagers. Eight women have disappeared over the past few days, and the police fear they may have a serial killer on their hands, but as the body count rises and the hungers grow, the Torchwood team realise there may be something much more dangerous than a serial killer at work.

Border Princes by Dan Abnett
Something is here that shouldn't be here. Something is watching. In Cardiff's secret heart, the members of the Torchwood team struggle to define and locate the intruder, and contain it before anyone gets hurt. But this time, they are out of their depth. How do you unlock a secret that can't be broken? How do you assess the facts when the facts change to cover all traces? How do you cope if people are already hurt and no one realises it? What do you do if you're one of them? The Border Princes are watching, and they play for keeps ...

Another Life by Peter Anghelides
A storm is brewing - the water levels of the Bristol Channel are inexplicably rising, and Cardiff Bay is under threat from the worst flooding in years. In the midst of the climate chaos, Torchwood is called to investigate a series of gruesome murders - vagrants found dead around Cardiff with their heads partially eaten. When Owen goes missing following a session on a virtual reality game, Jack, Gwen and the team must discover what's really going on before the water claims them all. And they must face the terror that lies at the bottom of the bay - waiting, feeding, controlling ...This work features characters from BBC's "Torchwood", as played by John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Naoko Mori, Burn Gorman and Gareth David-Lloyd.

BBC Audiobooks Press Release

Wednesday, 14 June 2006 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

BBC Audiobooks has issued a full press release for the three audio CD readings of the recent Doctor Who novels The Feast of the Drowned, The Resurrection Casket and The Stone Rose due on 3 July. Details are below. (Thanks to Lucy Groom/BBC Audiobooks)
Time Lord David Tennant brings these three new Doctor Who novels to life with his peerless narration, due to be published exclusively by BBC Audiobooks on 3rd July. Taken from the BBC Books of the same names, each individual release also includes an interview with the author, conducted by David Darlington of Doctor Who Magazine.

This is the first time David has appeared as the Doctor outside of the television series and brilliantly brings the novels to life, providing the voices of all the characters including the Doctor's companion Rose as well as his deadly enemies. Justin Richards, author of The Resurrection Casket said: "It's doubly rewarding as an author, not just to write for such an exciting and imaginative series as Doctor Who, but to hear your words read by none other than the Doctor himself. It's a privilege and a pleasure to hear David Tennant as the Doctor on audio, and of course he brings the same enthusiasm and style to the role as he does for the television series."

The Feast of the Drowned by Stephen Cole
When a naval cruiser sinks in mysterious circumstances in the North Sea, all aboard are lost. Rose is saddened to learn that the brother of her friend, Keisha, was among the dead. And yet he appears to them as a ghostly apparition, begging to be saved from the coming feast... the feast of the drowned. As the dead crew haunt loved ones all over London, the Doctor and Rose are drawn into a chilling mystery. What sank the ship, and why? When the cruiser's wreckage was towed up the Thames, what sinister force came with it?
The river's dark waters are hiding an even darker secret, as preparations for the feast near their conclusion…

The Resurrection Casket by Justin Richards
Starfall – a world on the edge, where crooks and smugglers hide in the gloomy shadows and modern technology refuses to work. And that includes the TARDIS. The pioneers who used to be drawn by the hope of making a fortune from the mines can find easier picking elsewhere. But they still come – for the romance of it, or old-fashioned organic mining. Or in the hope of finding the lost treasure of Hamlek Glint – scourge of the spaceways, privateer, adventurer, bandit… Will the TARDIS ever work again? Is Glint's lost treasure waiting to be found? And does the fabled Resurrection Casket – the key to eternal life – really exist? With the help of new friends, and to the horror of new enemies, The Doctor and Rose aim to find out…

The Stone Rose by Jacqueline Rayner
Mickey is startled to find a statue of Rose in a museum – a statue that is 2,000 years old. The Doctor realises that this means the TARDIS will shortly take them to Ancient Rome, but when it does, he and Rose soon have more on their minds than sculpture.
While the Doctor searches for a missing boy, Rose befriends a girl who claims to know the future – a girl whose predictions are surprisingly accurate. But then the Doctor stumbles on the hideous truth behind the statue of Rose – and Rose herself learns that you have to be very careful what you wish for…

BBC Book, Audio Release Update

Tuesday, 30 May 2006 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

According to Amazon.co.uk, there has been a change to the lineup of Tenth Doctor novels planned for 21 September release. Now listed along with Stephen Cole's The Art of Destruction and Mike Tucker's The Nightmare of Black Island, is The Price of Paradise by Colin Brake, replacing Jacqueline Rayner's previously announced "The Last Museum". The details on Brake's book are in the outset box, below.

Amazon.co.uk is also listing an 6 November MP3-CD release from BBC Audiobooks of Doctor Who Reconstructed: The Highlanders, which will be the second release in the Reconstructed range, following 2005's "The Power of the Daleks". Details listed below.
The Price of Paradise, by Colin Brake
Laylora - the Paradise Planet - is a world of breath-taking beauty, where peace-loving aboriginals live in harmony with their environment. Or do they? The Doctor and Rose arrive to find that the once-perfect eco-system is showing signs of failing. The paradise planet has become a death trap as terrifying creatures from ancient legends appear and stalk the land...Is there a connection between the human explorers who have crash-landed and the savage monsters? What secret lies at the heart of the natives' ancient ceremonies? And, what price might one human have to pay to save the only home he has ever known? When a planet itself becomes sick, can there be a cure? The Doctor and Rose find themselves in a race against time to find out...This work features the Doctor and Rose as played by David Tennant and Billie Piper in the hit series from BBC Television.

Doctor Who Reconstructed: The Highlanders
This unique project matches the soundtrack recording of a classic 'Doctor Who' television story with a visual slideshow of 'telesnaps' showing images from the lost film recording. Of the 100 plus episodes of 'Doctor Who' which are absent from the television archives, only two elements survive: off-air sound recordings and 'telesnaps'. For each 25 minute episode of 'Doctor Who', approximately 70 off-screen photographs exist. Since 1998 BBC Audio has successfully published the soundtracks of these missing stories, with addition linking narration. This new MP3-CD series now marries the sound with the telesnaps, to present a slideshow of images from the episodes and going some way to 'reconstructing' the original film episodes. In 'The Highlanders', the Doctor (Patrick Troughton) and his companions Ben and Polly arrive on Culloden Moor in 1745. There they become embroiled in the bloody battle between Highlanders and Redcoats, and befriend a new Tardis occupant: Jamie McCrimmon (Frazer Hines).
