Big Finish - Fifth Doctor meets Cicero

Friday, 5 April 2019 - Reported by Marcus
Samuel Barnett, Peter Davison (Credit: Big Finish)Peter Davison’s Fifth Doctor meets Samuel Barnett’s Cicero this September in a Doctor Who audio drama from Big Finish Productions as the Doctor, Tegan and Nyssa travel back to ancient Naples and the town of Cumae by the base of Mount Vesuvius.

The Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) resumes his travels in space and time this September with companions Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Nyssa (Sarah Sutton). But instead of exploring the far reaches of space he’s taking a little trip back in time to meet an icon of classical philosophy.

Cicero was a Roman politician, lawyer and orator living in a time when the Roman Empire was in a turbulent position due to the rise of Caeser. Cicero’s impact on Latin languages is immeasurable, which makes him a worthy candidate to meet the hero of space and time, the Doctor!

Samuel Barnett, the star of Cicero – a Big Finish Originals range – reprises his role to join the world of Doctor Who in Tartarus by David Llewellyn.

Peter Davison, who first played the Doctor on television in 1981, told us more about recording this new audio story
I love an adventure where we interfere with history, especially when we completely destroy the reputation of a historical character! My Doctor travelled to The Great Fire of London, then the destruction of the dinosaurs… everything in history is handed down to us.

I think all our heroes of history would be disappointments if we actually met them! Plus, I was ‘fanboying’ over Dirk Gently which Samuel starred in.
Samuel Barnett also told us more about bringing his portrayal of the classic orator to the world of science fiction
There is a precedent in Doctor Who of the Doctor visiting real life occasions, locations and people that are familiar to us in history. The Doctor meeting Cicero lets us see Cicero’s skills as an orator that will hopefully help to save the day… Peter Davison’s portrayal of the Doctor was my Doctor on television when I was growing up, so I’m absolutely thrilled.
October’s release of The Monthly Adventures is Interstitital / Feast of Fear by Carl Rowens / Martyn Waites and in November, Warzone / Conversion by Chris Chapman / Guy Adams.

All three Fifth Doctor adventures can be pre-ordered ahead of their release in September, October and November 2019 at £14.99 on CD or £12.99 on download. All CD purchases unlock a download option via the Big Finish app and the Big Finish website.

CHAS - Charity Event

Thursday, 4 April 2019 - Reported by Marcus
Adam Meldrum and Peter Capaldi at CHAS Capital Sci-Fi Con 2019Children’s Hospices Across Scotland, better known as CHAS have launched a campaign asking people to ‘get your geek on’ for Geeky T-Shirt Weekend.

The event follows the success of Edinburgh’s Capital Sci-Fi Con, the not-for-profit pop culture, comic and movie convention which donates all profits to CHAS.

On Friday 3rd and Saturday, May 4th, CHAS are encouraging the public to show allegiance for their preferred science-fiction and fantasy heroes. Whether you’re into Doctor Who or maybe Star Wars or Star Trek, DC or Marvel, Harry Potter or hairy Hobbits.

All supporters need to do is don their favourite geeky t-shirt on the day and donate £2 to the charity by calling 0141 779 6180 or visiting www.chas.org.uk/donate. Schools, workplaces and community groups who would like a pack to participate can contact support@chas.org.uk.

Support has already come from Scottish actors Peter Capaldi and Billy Boyd, who have pledged to get their geek on for the occasion. Capaldi recently gave a full day of his time to meet well over 500 fans at Capital Sci-Fi Con, raising thousands of pounds for the charity by donating 100% of proceeds raised from his autographs.

Peter Capaldi said
I’ve seen at first-hand what fan communities are capable of when they get together. And the CHAS cause is one I know they will want to unite behind. Get your geeky t-shirt on to help the families this wonderful charity cares for.

Every week, three children in Scotland die from a life-shortening condition. At present, CHAS can only reach one of those three. The reality can be stark for some families and CHAS are focused on helping find light and joy in their hour of need.

The funds and awareness raised by Geeky T-Shirt Day will help them on their mission to reach every single baby, child and young person who needs them.
CHAS is the only charity in Scotland that provides hospice services for babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions. The national charity offers palliative care and family respite via its two hospices, Rachel House in Kinross and Robin House in Balloch.

The CHAS at Home service supports families in their own homes across the whole of Scotland and has teams working in communities and hospitals across the country. In addition, the charity supports families and clinical teams with a network of Diana Children’s Nurses

Lethbridge-Stewart: The HAVOC Files 2 special edition

Wednesday, 20 February 2019 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Candy Jar Books has announced a special edition of The HAVOC Files 2 to be released at the beginning of March:

Lethbridge-Stewart: The HAVOC Files 2 Special Edition (Credit: Candy Jar Books)The HAVOC Files 2 - Special Edition
Cover by Adrian Salmon

Ghosts in Cornwall, zombies in Australia, aliens at Wembley, trouble in Egypt, a siege on the Kent coast, and an investigation into the strange goings on in a small house in Mevagissey, which sees Lethbridge-Stewart and Anne Travers cut down to size. And, much later, the ashes from a destroyed Earth fall on Lethbridge-Stewart and his family.

Just a few things our heroes have to face in this volume of collected short stories.

This new revised version of The HAVOC Files 2 contains the original six short stories, plus a new version of Ashes of the Inferno, and two new stories exclusively published in print for the first time.
  • Piece of Mind by James Middleditch. Lethbridge-Stewart and Sally are sent on a retreat with a difference.
  • Vampires of the Night by Chris Thomas. World War II and Professor Travers is called in to help with a deadly experiment on British soldiers.
Includes:
  • Vampires of the Night by Chris Thomas
  • In His Kiss by Sue Hampton
  • House of Giants by Rick Cross
  • The Black Eggs of Khufu by Tom Dexter
  • The Band of Evil by Roger J Simmonds & Shaun Russell (updated version of the story)
  • Piece of Mind by James Middleditch
  • The Playing Dead by Adrian Sherlock (updated version of the story)
  • Ashes of the Inferno by Andy Frankham-Allen (new version of the story)
  • The Lock-In by Sarah Groenewegen BEM
  • Schädengeist’s Lot by Jonathan Cooper (interludes from The Showstoppers)
  • Exodus from Venus by John Peel (original prologue from The Grandfather Infestation)

Originally published in 2016 as a limited print-run, The HAVOC Files 2: Special Edition is a reprint with a difference, containing as it does new editions of previous stories, and two short stories available for the first time in print. Head of Publishing Shaun Russell explained:
We have often been asked by those who missed The HAVOC Files 2 the first time around if we’d ever reprint it. After much discussion, we decided doing so would present us with a couple of challenges and opportunities. One, at least one story in the original collection was set in the ‘future’ (Ashes of the Inferno), with information that, at the time, hadn’t been locked down. The author of the story in question, Andy Frankham-Allen, realised it would be the perfect chance to update that story so it better fit the narrative revealed since early 2016. Two, another story has since been released as part of a full-length novella, and thus it seemed redundant to print it again in this format. So, faced with this, I made the decision to instead replace it with a couple of short stories only previously available in digital format.
Range Editor Andy Frankham-Allen continued:
We have a few digital-only stories, plus some still unreleased short stories, so we had a fair few to pick from. We decided on James Middleditch’s Piece of Mind, and Chris Thomas’ Vampires of the Night (both originally planned for the cancelled HAVOC Files 5), two vastly different stories, one dealing with Professor Edward Travers, and one dealing with the Brigadier and Sally Wright. Coupled with the chance to fix previous errors that crept into the other stories, The HAVOC Files 2 is quite a different experience now. Still contains everything in the original, but with bonus material for those wishing to double-dip, and loads of fresh material for those who missed the original version. All wrapped up in the wonderful new cover design, with, once again, Adrian Salmon’s brilliant artwork!

The HAVOC Files 2: Special Edition is available for pre-order now from the Candy Jar website.

Candy Jar is also releasing updated versions of Mutually Assured Domination by Nick Walters and The Forgotten Son by Andy Frankham-Allen. Both books have around 3000 words of bonus material. These books can be pre-ordered from the
Candy Jar website.

Radio Times

Saturday, 8 December 2018 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Radio Times, 8-14 Dec 2018 (Credit: Radio Times)This week's edition of the Radio Times (8-14 Dec) is the latest in this year's issues to showcase Doctor Who, making it the fourth time in six months that Jodie Whittaker has graced the front cover! Unlike in previous years, however, it isn't the Doctor's Christmas adventure being previewed this time around but her New Year's outing instead.

Inside the magazine is a four page interview with Bradley Walsh, who discusses his career to date and also explains why he wouldn't want to play the Doctor himself:
My style can be as manic as the next person's, but the Doctor has a certain style and, despite regeneration, I think they ostensibly remain the same type of person. And if you don't know the back catalogue and all the jargon, you're up against it. Whereas I ducked out in 1969 (during Patrick Troughton's time as the Doctor) and for me this is brand spanking new. Besides, Jodie is absolutely fantastic.
Another page focusses on Bradley's co-stars, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole, both of whom still enjoy their anonymity, and on the forthcoming New Year's Day special. The issue also, of course, covers the final episode in the current run of the series, The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos, on this Sunday at 6:25pm.

The Radio Times is available to purchase now from retail outlets in the UK, and the magazine's "legendary Christmas edition", covering New Years Day, is also out now.
