Australian Torchwood Coverage

Wednesday, 13 June 2007 - Reported by Josiah Rowe

In the run-up to Torchwood's Australian debut next Monday (June 18), the Australian media have had a few stories about the spin-off. The Sunday Telegraph of Sydney writes about the fact that the series will air on Ten instead of the ABC, the traditional home of Doctor Who in Australia. The Age of Melbourne has a longer feature story, with quotes fromRussell T. Davies andBurn Gorman. Davies talks about the origins of the programme and its attitude towards sexuality, and Gorman speaks about the cast's working dynamics.

The Adelaide Advertiser gives the programme four stars calling the cast 'led by John Barrowman as . . . simply astounding.' Sean Fewster writes that the show 'is cooler than the outside of an Ice Warrior's armour, but one that's bound to attract controversy from the get-go.' The Australian Who magazine also gives the first episode four stars and makes it their 'show of the week'.

Dilemma Averted for London Gay Who Fans

Wednesday, 13 June 2007 - Reported by R Alan Siler

As reported by PinkNews, the final episode of Series Three of Doctor Who,The Last of the Time Lords, is being broadcast on the same day as the London Pride Festival, held in Trafalgar Square.

Organizers of the event, in an effort to not make gay Who fans choose between the annual celebration and the season finale of their favourite show, have come up with an interesting compromise: they plan to carry the live BBC broadcast of the episode at 7:10 p.m. on a big screen at the event's main stage in Trafalgar Square. And if that's not enough to get gay fans out to the event, they've also arranged to have John Barrowman co-host the event with Graham Norton. Barrowman will be speaking earlier in the afternoon about his role as Captain Jack on Doctor Who and Torchwood.

The event kicks off at 3:00 following the Pride parade through town and concludes with the broadcast of The Last of the Time Lords.

Radio Times Poster Offer

Wednesday, 13 June 2007 - Reported by Kenny Davidson

This week's Radio Times features a large double-sided panoramic poster offer. One side features the Doctor, Martha and Jack inside the Tardis, and the other side has a rogues' gallery of recent enemies, including the Angels, Dalek Sec and its mutant hybrid, Scarecrows and the Judoon. The poster measures 124 x 45cm, and is available with two tokens and a fee for postage. The first token is in this weeks issue, the second in next weeks.

Also in Radio Times this week, an interview with Torchwood star John Barrowman on returning to Doctor Who. Click on the spoiler tag to read an extract.
"It's not the Captain Jack from Torchwood. He's not angsty, he's not moody; he's determined, but in a different way. Captain Jack from Doctor Who is a little more light-hearted, because he’s back where he wants to be. Although he loves the Torchwood team, one of his main objectives over the past couple of years has been to find the Doctor, to figure out why Jack is the way he is. Now he's there, he can let the Doctor take the responsibility for everything and he can sit in the background a bit."

Blink - AI figure and Sunday Ratings

Monday, 11 June 2007 - Reported by Marcus
Episode ten, Blink, grabbed the attention of the British public, with an Appreciation Index, or AI, figure of 87. This is a considerable achievement for a programme which featured very little of the two main characters. Last year's Doctor-lite episode, Love and Monsters, scored 76. The figure is the joint second-best of series three, being beaten by the season opener Smith and Jones.

The AI figure was the joint-highest on Saturday night, along withCoast on BBC Two.

Of the audience, 82% said they made a special effort to watch, while an amazing 90% watched with a lot of attention. 63% said it felt original and different and 44% said it was a programme they intended to discuss with others.

With the full week's overnights now available, Doctor Who is currently the 18th most watched programme of the week.

The BBC Three audience on Sunday night was down to 0.68 million viewers. With a share of 4% this made it the second most watched programme on multichannel television, being beaten by The Simpsons on Sky one.
