Sun gives "Voyage" details?

Tuesday, 16 October 2007 - Reported by Josiah Rowe

The Sun has reported alleged details from the upcoming Christmas Special "Voyage of the Damned", starring David Tennant andKylie Minogue.

In the past, the Sun has reported some accurate plot details about Doctor Who scripts (such as a 2005 report that the Daleks and Cybermen would face off, as they did in the episode "Doomsday") and has also printed some stories which proved to be false (such as a 2006 report that Zoe Lucker would be playing the Rani).

Time will tell which category today's story falls in; just in case it's correct this time round, the details of this story are in the spoiler box below.
The Sun reports that Minogue's character, named Astrid Peth, will share a kiss with the Doctor, and that at the end of the special the character "spins off into space in a strange 'half-form' of herself." The article also states:
  • The episode is set on board the Titanic, "which has become a spaceship run by arch-baddie Max Capricorn."
  • Astrid and the Doctor team up to save the earth from Max's scheme.
  • "Astrid tells the Doctor: 'You need someone to look after you -- can I come with you?' He agrees."
  • "The special ends with a stunning scene in which the Titanic falls from the sky and looks like crashing on Buckingham Palace."

"Gap Year" and Fifth Series Plans Announced

Monday, 3 September 2007 - Reported by Jarrod Cooper

Following media speculation, the BBC have confirmed future plans for Doctor Who in a press releasetoday.

After the fourth series airs in 2008, David Tennant will continue in the role of the Doctor for a Christmas special at the end of 2008. After that, instead of a full series beginning filming, the production team, with Tennant still in the role, will be working on three Doctor Who specials, led by Russell T Davies, to be shown on BBC1 throughout the year of 2009. A fifth full series is scheduled for 2010, though asBBC News point out, casting is unconfirmed for that far ahead.

Media speculation was sparked by reports that Tennant had been cast in the title role of Hamlet, in a production for the Royal Shakespeare Company from July to November 2008. This would have conflicted with filming a fifth series for airing in the spring of 2009. The RSC 2008 Flyer and BBC News are confirming Tennant's role in the play.

Rumors over the past several months have suggested that the show would be going on a sort of 'temporary hiatus' after the fourth series, though the BBC has emphasized the series' return for a full fifth year. It is not known whether Davies will continue in the helm of the series when it does return on a weekly basis, however.

The press release included the following quotes:
Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, says: "Doctor Who is one of the BBC's best loved and most successful dramas. Its journey over the past three series has been one of the most ambitious and exciting that we have had, and I'm delighted to be able to confirm not only three exciting specials for 2009, but a fifth series in 2010."

Menna Richards, Controller, BBC Wales, says: "The success of Doctor Who is a fantastic tribute to the dedication and expertise of the production team at BBC Wales who have worked on the project from the outset. This announcement is marvellous news for all involved, and more importantly for the programme's amazing fan base and audience. BBC Wales is looking forward to producing the fifth series."

Reports on the publicity picture can also be found at BBC News OnlineThe SunThe Times, the Daily Mail and This is London.

The MediaGuardian's report on the image runs in their Media Monkey diary column (requires free registration to view), which also quotes BBC One controller Peter Fincham on the subject of Doctor Who from today's press launch for his channel's forthcoming autumn season line-up. "Today at the BBC1 autumn launch the channel's Cyber controller Peter Fincham dodged a question about the casting of Catherine Tate, depriving viewers of Martha Jones, one of the few black role models on television. 'They want to top each previous series with the new one,' Fincham told hacks. 'I wouldn't put pressure on Russell in any way to do anything,' Fincham said. We kind of guessed that from the overblown season finale this year, Pete."

In the Telegraph piece, Swift says of his Christmas special character: "It's a lovely part and I'll be working with Kylie Minogue, who I was introduced to at the read-through, and David Tennant, who is a terrific actor."

Swift also appeared in the BBC TV drama Born and Bred, which ran from 2002 to 2004 and was created by Chris Chibnall, the co-producer ofTorchwood.

Chibnall was consulting/executive producer of Born and Bred, which also ranked Phil Collinson among its producers.
