Fan Events

Saturday, 16 August 2014 - Reported by Marcus
There is a Doctor Who event at this years Burning Man festival in Nevada, which takes place between 25 August and 1st September.

The Burning Man festival is a bizarre event which happens in the middle of a desert salt bed in Nevada. It is different from other festivals in that there are no paid bands or DJs. The participants create their own entertainment. It is famously a place where makers and artists build amazing sculptures and art cars, with an emphasis on things that burn!

Quixotes Cabaret Club and Bar is a British camp at the festival. They create a venue and a bar and invite anyone at the festival with any entertaining act to come up and perform. Each year they have a different décor theme. This year it is Doctor Who.

The entrance to the camp will be through a TARDIS against a brick wall and the organisers will have an art car in the shape of K-9.

The camp is located at 7:30 and Ephesus, the cabaret nights are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday around 9pm, with a Doctor Who extravaganza evening on the Friday. The club will be glad to see any Re-incarnations of the Doctor, Time Lords, assistants and monsters but warn that Daleks may well be turned around and pushed out. If anyone wishes to get in touch with the camp, please e-mail Paul Pickup at bigfoot.com
An "unofficial" Doctor Who Disneyland theme day is taking place in September.

In Galliday 1.5 hundreds of fans in Cosplay and fanshirts are expected at the California theme park, taking over rides, playing games and contests.

A page has been set up on Facebook as well as twitter and Tumblr.

Organiser Amy McCain told Doctor Who News
We had a trial run in January and the response was nothing short of amazing! 400+ people showed up. Afterward, our fanbase exploded! They all demanded we do 2 events a year instead of one. Now here it is.

Doctor Who Tour reaches New York

Friday, 15 August 2014 - Reported by Marcus
The Doctor Who World Tour has reached North America, with stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, alongside lead writer Steven Moffat, meeting fans and attending a Question and Answer session at the Ziegfeld Theatre in Manhattan.

Fans camped out for up to 10 hours to see the stars emerge from a New York taxi as they attended the special screening of this year's season opener Deep Breath.

Peter Caplidi told the crowd he had been watching Doctor Who since he was five.
Actors who played Doctor Who – Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker – those were the people I was watching. More than Laurence Olivier. I turned up on set and saw the Tardis. I remember touching it … the police box … and I got a little bit teary. I was just so thrilled to be there,
The tour now moves into its final few days with events in Mexico City on Sunday and Rio de Janeiro on Monday. The team then return to the UK in time for a special event at the Odeon Leicester Square on Saturday to launch the series around the world.

Mixed fortunes for DWM and DWA as new circulation figures published

Friday, 15 August 2014 - Reported by John Bowman
The latest circulation figures for Doctor Who Magazine and Doctor Who Adventures show both publications suffering a drop in sales for the first half of this year, although DWM can take comfort from recording a year-on-year rise.

The new Audit Bureau of Circulations figures cover the January to June 2014 period, and during that time DWM saw its total average net circulation fall to 33,538 per issue - down by 2,613 and 7.2 per cent on the previous six months. On the plus side for the Panini publication, it was still a year-on-year rise of 5.8 per cent. The figure is for both print and digital copies.

DWA, however, has suffered particularly badly. The fortnightly mag from Immediate Media Co fell just below the 20,000 mark, posting a total average net circulation of 19,966 per issue for the first six months of this year, equating to a drop of 8,477 and a slump of 29.8 per cent. Year-on-year, this represented a fall of 18.5 per cent. The figure is for print copies only. Although the publication is also available as a download, zero digital sales have been recorded.

In a statement, DWM editor Tom Spilsbury said:
We're delighted with our new ABC figure. After the last period was boosted with the incredible sales of our 50th-anniversary edition, which sold over 50,000 copies alone, we were bracing ourselves for a fall. We thought that we might be down to under 30,000 for the first six months of 2014, which comparatively were always going to be a quiet period. However, for us to be up year-on-year is a stunning achievement, especially when you consider that during the January-June 2013 sales period we also had eight new TV episodes to help bolster sales of the magazine.

The magazine industry is continuing to find times very tough, with the overall market experiencing declines. However, we're pleased to see our digital sales on the increase, as well as subscription levels - so the future is looking very bright for DWM! I'm sure we'll be able to build on these figures for the next sales period, when we'll have the benefit of a brand-new Doctor getting his era under way!

Congratulations to all of DWM's hard-working contributors, and many thanks to all our loyal readers.

There has been no statement as yet from DWA.

The circulation figures for July to December 2014 are due to be published in February 2015.

UPDATE - 18th AUGUST 2014: DWA today gave Doctor Who News the following statement regarding the latest circulation figure.

Consultant publisher Jaynie Bye said:
A sales dip during an extended period when the show is off air is no surprise for Doctor Who Adventures. We are really excited about the new series this month and have planned an amazing range of fantastic new content. We have some fantastic new ideas for the new-look magazine to ensure that Doctor Who Adventures remains THE destination for young fans keen to extend their interest in the series.
Meanwhile, editor Moray Laing said:
We've redecorated! It's an exciting time having a brand-new series and a brand-new Doctor – so we wanted a new look for the magazine too. I'm really pleased with how this all looks, and sure our readers will like it too.

New Title Sequence is Fan Inspired

Friday, 15 August 2014 - Reported by Marcus
With a new Doctor comes a new title sequence, but the latest incarnation is special in that the inspiration came from a fan made clip, posted on YouTube.

Billy Hanshaw is a motion graphics professional based in Leeds, mostly working on tv commercials and corporate presentations. However as an exercise he created a mock version of a new title sequence for the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi and posted it on his YouTube channel where it has recieved over 700,000 hits.

The sequence came to the attention of Doctor Who's show-runner Steven Moffat, who described it as absolutely stunning and commissioned Hanshaw to work with BBC Wales to create the new titles for the new series. Speaking in New York Moffat said
Hanshaw created this title sequence, put it up on YouTube. I happened to cross it, and it was the only new title idea I’d seen since 1963. We got in touch with him, and said, okay, we’re going to do that one.
The new title sequence will be revealed to the world on August 23rd. However the initial concept clip, which grabbed the attention of the production team, is still available to view on YouTube.

But it isn't the dead man cocooned inside a huge mass of web that worries the Doctor. It isn't the swarming, mutated insects that make him nervous.

With the village cut off from the outside world, and the insects becoming more and more dangerous, the Doctor knows that unless he can decode the strange symbols engraved on an ancient stone circle, and unravel a mystery dating back to the Second World War, no one is safe.
Doctor Who: The Blood Cell: James Goss

The Governor is responsible for the cruellest murderers so he's not impressed by the arrival of the man they're calling the most dangerous criminal in the quadrant. Or, as he prefers to be known, the Doctor.

But when the new prisoner immediately sets about trying to escape, and keeps trying, the Governor sets out to find out why.

When the killing finally starts, the Governor begins to get his answers.
Doctor Who: Silhouette: Justin Richards

Marlowe Hapworth is found dead in his locked study, killed by an unknown assailant. This is a case for the Great Detective, Madame Vastra.

Rick Bellamy, bare-knuckle boxer, has the life drawn out of him by a figure dressed as an undertaker. This angers Strax the Sontaran.

The Carnival of Curiosities, a collection of bizarre and fascinating sideshows and performers. This is where Jenny Flint looks for answers.
