Big Finish Productions has announced some casting news for its upcoming audio adaptation releases of the three Doctor Who stage plays from years past.
Trevor Martin, who played the Doctor in the 1974 stage play
"The Seven Keys to Doomsday," will reprise the role for the audio adaptation, while
Charlie Hayes will play companion Jenny; Hayes is the daughter of actress Wendy Padbury, who played Jenny during the play's initial run and also played Zoe Heriot in the late 1960s TV episodes with Patrick Troughton.
Colin Baker reprises the role of the Doctor in
"The Ultimate Adventure" and is joined by
David Banks as Karl, reprising his role from that play; Banks is also familiar to Doctor Who fans as the Cyberleader from 1980s Doctor Who, and also understudied the role of the Doctor in several performances during the play's original run. Finally,
"Curse of the Daleks" features actor
Michael Praedas the lead character, Ladiver; he is joined by actor
John Line, who played Ladiver in the original play's run back in 1965 and here plays Professor Vanderlyn.
The audio adaptations of the stage plays will be released by Big Finish in late September (The Ultimate Adventure), October (The Seven Keys to Doomsday) and November (Curse of the Daleks).
Meanwhile, the company has also announced the scheduling of
The Masters of War, the long awaited eighth installment of their "Doctor Who Unbound" audio series by Eddie Robson, for December release. The play features the return of
David Warner as the alternate third Doctor, which he created in "Sympathy for the Devil", alongside
Nicholas Courtney playing the version of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart that goes traveling with the Doctor at the end of the previous tale.
Terry Molloy returns to the role of Davros for the installment.

Big Finish Productions has recently announced that their
Companion Chronicles line will go from being a mini-series to an ongoing monthly range starting in July. The series will continue to be released in "seasons" with each season comprising of twelve releases. Each release is a new Doctor Who story as told by one of the Doctor's companions played by the actor who portrayed the role in the
Classic Doctor Who TV series.
July's release is a First Doctor adventure narrated by Carole Ann Ford as the Doctor’s granddaughter, Susan. The story, entitled
Here There be Monsters, has been written by Andy Lane. In the adventure, the Doctor, Barbara, Susan and Ian face creatures from another dimension.
August sees
The Great Space Elevator, written by Jonathan Morris, featuring Deborah Watling as Victoria Waterfield in an adventure with the Second Doctor where a one-way trip leads to a confrontation with an alien force that threatens the Earth.
September's release is
The Doll of Death by Marc Platt, an adventure for the Third Doctor told by Katy Manning as Jo Grant. This is the first time that Katy has reprised her role since she starred in the TV series in the 1970s.
The fourth adventure,
Empathy Games by Nigel Fairs features the Fourth Doctor’s companion, Leela played by Louise Jameson.
November's release for the First Doctor features Sara Kingdom who originally joined the TARDIS crew for the epic length TV story, The Daleks' Master Plan. As in the original TV series, Sara Kingdom will once again be played by Jean Marsh. The story, entitled
Home Truths, has been written by Simon Guerrier.
With the expansion of the releases, the series will now include tales from Companions to Doctors 5 through 8, as well as tales from characters who are not strictly companions. Already confirmed to be appearing later on in the range are Mary Tamm (Romana I), Richard Franklin (Mike Yates), Sarah Sutton (Nyssa), and Sophie Aldred (Ace).

Posted By Shaun Lyon BBC America/Warner Home Video has sold its last remaining stock of three Doctor Who VHS titles -- The Monster of Peladon, The Mark of the Rani and Timelash -- and will not be reissuing them in the future. As we have previously reported, while some Doctor Who videos currently still stocked will be lowered in price this October, much of the VHS backlog is being cleared out as VHS becomes relegated to memory; additionally, Planet of Fire and Battlefield aren't quite out of stock yet, but are getting close and won't be rereleased either. Movers (Volume 5) and
A Labyrinth of Histories (Volume 6) are written by Faction creator Lawrence Miles; both were recently recorded by BBV and again feature Suzanne Procter as Cousin Justine. Says the information sent to Outpost Gallifrey, "These two plays take the Faction story in an interestingly different direction; as well as discovering what it means to be a prisoner on the remote prison world of the Houses, we take a trip back into the late nineteenth century, where a bizarre hunt is taking place..." The audios also star Ellis Pike (Godfather Morlock), Emma Kilbey (Cousin Eliza), Keith Drinkel (Godfather Sabbath), Kate Dyson (Demetra Kine), Matt Kelly (First Ordinary Selvynkesh), Lena Rae (Emma), Scott Craig (Mr. Smith), Chris Manville (Second Ordinary Keeble), Linda Bartram (Shuncucker) and Nigel Fairs (the Reverend). As we previously noted in this column, the DVDs were originally due out August 4; several stores received their stocks and started sending them out early before Worldwide recalled them due to a lack of the interior booklet. We have been told that the BBC will not send out booklets for those missing them, as the copies distributed prior to August 4 were intended for this recall. August 19, 2003 • Posted By Shaun LyonAmong the murmurs of special events for the upcoming 40th anniversary was an article in the "Sunday Stirrer" section of the UK's Daily Star late last week, which mentioned the following: "STIRRER has stumbled across evidence that the Conservative Party is willing to boldly go where no party has gone before in its desperate bid for voters. Shadow Transport Secretary and Star Trek nut Tim Collins has agreed to appear in a DVD tribute to Dr Who. Perhaps the next party manifesto will promise a police box on each street to further woo the geek vote." Big Finish has announced full details of the forthcoming
He Jests at Scars... by Gary Russell, the fourth "Doctor Who Unbound" serial that DWM reported (and we posted) earlier this week. The story explores "what might have happened if the Valeyard had not been defeated at the end of the Sixth Doctor's trial." "Gary had been itching to write a Valeyard story for a long time," says producer John Ainsworth, "and it seemed to be a good fit with the Doctor Who Unbound series." The story was contingent upon Jayston being able to return, which he did with open arms. Also returning is Bonnie Langford as Melanie, but a slightly different version: "Mel is a little bit more gritty a little tougher. ... It's nice to have a Mel who's a little bit more realistic and a little less goody-two-shoes." Also returning are Anthony Keetch (who played Vansell in several Big Finish audios) and Juliet Warner as Ellie Martin (from the Sarah Jane Smith series), who becomes the Valeyard's companion here. The story is due out in August; at right is the current publicity shot and below is the story blurb. The trailer for the story is available on Big Finish's website. Big Finish has also announced that the sixth story,
Deadline by Rob Shearman, starring Derek Jacobi, has been moved up to fifth in release order, while
Exile by Nicholas Briggs -- the story that will feature a female Doctor -- will now be released last, in October. (Thanks to Big Finish)
He Jests at Scars, by Gary Russell
What if... the Valeyard had won?
The thing about meddling with time is that one moment something is real, the next, it's been erased. Probability become just a possibility. Established truth becomes a theoretical falsehood. Like dominoes, as one timeline falls, the others come cascading down around it. You can engineer new timelines, new possibilities but before long, the distinction between what is, what was, what might be and what never can be becomes blurred.
Out of this grow myths, lies and legends. The Doctor was one such legend, but no one knows whether he truly ever existed. Well, not now they don't. The Mighty One, ruling the multiverses from the eternal city of Chronopolis has made sure of that.
Starring Michael Jayston (the Valeyard) and Bonnie Langford (Mel), with Anthony Keetch (Coordinator Vansell), Tim Preece (the President), Juliet Warner (Ellie Martin), Jane McFarlane (Nula) and Mark Donovan (Gerrof). Directed by Gary Russell.

As we reported yesterday, the newest issue of Doctor Who Magazine notes that, in addition to Michael Jayston and Bonnie Langford as the Valeyard and Melanie (as noted two days ago), the fourth "Doctor Who Unbound" CD He Jests at Scars... from Big Finish, written by Gary Russell, features the return of Juliet Warner as Ellie Martin, a character from the Sarah Jane Smith series of audios (and now, apparently a companion to the Valeyard), and Anthony Keetch as Coordinator Vansell from several BF audios including "The Sirens of Time" and "The Apocalypse Element". The story posits "what if... the Doctor didn't defeat the Valeyard?" DWM also reveals that Rob Shearman's Deadline, starring Derek Jacobi, is about a writer whose idea for a new television series was rejected... but is later haunted by visions of himself as the Doctor. The new DWM issue also mentions that Big Finish has commissioned a third Dalek Empire serial, likely from Nicholas Briggs. More details as we get them. (Thanks to DWM and Gallifrey 5)

Big Finish has issued details on two of its forthcoming Bernice Summerfield audios, both due in August, featuring the further exploits of the former Doctor Who novel companion:
The Draconian Rage by Trevor Baxendale, featuring the return of the Draconians (the Third Doctor story "Frontier in Space") and
The Poison Seas by David Bailey featuring the Sea Devils (from "The Sea Devils"). Details are as follows (with thanks to Big Finish):
The Draconian Rage, by Trevor Baxendale
On the fringes of the Draconian Empire, an entire planet has gone mad: twenty million Draconians lie dead victims of an ancient, apocalyptic suicide ritual. Now the Draconians need an archaeologist and in particular they want Professor Bernice Summerfield.
Female and human, Benny is everything a Draconian distrusts. So why has she been invited to the very heart of the Imperial Homeworld? As an age-old conspiracy deepens around her, and her own bad memories are disturbed, Benny wonders if she can really trust the Draconians. And, even worse, if she can even trust herself.
Starring Lisa Bowerman (Bernice) with Miles Richardson (Irving Braxiatel), Philip Bretherton (Emperor Shenn), Kraig Thornber (Lord Paranash) and Johnson Willis (Lord Vasar). Directed by Edward Salt.
The Poison Seas, by David Bailey
Professor Bernice Summerfield's life has never been what you could call simple. But, just as she really feels like things at the Braxiatel Collection might be settling down to some sort of normality, she is sent away from the comforts of home on a mission for the Earth Reptile Council.
Bernice has visited the planet Chosan before, so she seems the ideal candidate to intervene when a Sea Devil colony there comes under threat from a terrorist cell. Under cover of visiting an old friend, Bernice sets out to learn who is working in league with the terrorists to ensure the eradication of the colony. But as she delves deeper under the oceans of Chosan, she discovers that something else something much more ancient and powerful wants rid of the Sea Devils. Soon, every living thing on the planet is in peril. And all because there's no place like home...
Starring Lisa Bowerman (Bernice) with Miles Richardson (Irving Braxiatel), Ifan Huw Dafydd (Principal Lurnix), Nicky Goldie (Clinician Nedda), Jenny Livesay (Joanne Carver) and Matt Dineen (Ressix). Directed by Edward Salt.
