Doctor Who and the Silver Spiral

Friday, 29 January 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster

Astronomer Dr Megan Argo has published a report on a major cosmic discovery in the form of a Doctor Who story!

The discovery relates to a powerful jet of energy seen from an exploding star in a distant galaxy observed when Dr Argo was working with an international team at Jodrell Bank. As well as the more scientific technical report on the event (to be published in Nature), the doctor, a keen science fiction and Doctor Who fan, decided to also write the discovery up in story form in order to introduce the discovery to the general public.

Megan, from Macclesfield, Cheshire, told Skymania News:
I've been a Doctor Who fan since I was a child. It was partially to blame for me becoming a scientist. I first came across an concept called entropy in a Doctor Who story called Logopolis and remember being fascinated, even though it was some ten years before it was ever mentioned in a physics lesson.

You can read the story of the discovery through the eyes of the Doctor and Martha in Doctor Who and the Silver Spiral from Megan's own blog; the official title of the paper in Nature will be: "A mildly relativistic radio jet from the normal Type Ic Supernova 2007gr".

The Northampton Chronicle reports that the five-inch model of new Doctor, Matt Smith, has completely sold out. Shops across the actor's home county have reported queues of people trying to obtain the figure. The paper quotes Smith's mother, Lynne Smith, as saying how amazed she was at the likeness of the model to her son. "It was fabulous to see his first model, it was really exciting for us all."

Comedian and Big Finish actor Charlie Ross has launched a Facebook campaign to try to get Bernard Cribbins 1960s hit song "Right Said Fred" back into the UK charts. Ross said "After the campaign to get Rage Against the Machine to the Christmas number one here in the UK, I thought this was firstly a fitting tribute to Bernard following his wonderful performance in The End Of Time and also it would be a lot of fun!"

Tennant backs the Labour Party

Saturday, 9 January 2010 - Reported by Anthony Weight

Several news sources, including BBC News and The Mirror, have today picked up on comments by former Doctor Who star David Tennant in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, where he gives his backing to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the Labour Party. He also criticises the Conservative Party, particularly opposition leader David Cameron.

In the magazine, published last Thursday, Tennant is quoted as saying:

"I would still rather have Gordon Brown than David Cameron... I would rather have a prime minister who is the cleverest person in the room, than a prime minister who looks good in a suit. I think David Cameron is a terrifying prospect... a regional newsreader who will jump on whatever bandwagon flies past. I get quite panicked at the notion that people are buying his rhetoric, because it seems very manipulative to me. Clearly, the Labour Party is not without some issues right now and I do get frustrated. They need to sort some stuff out, but they are still a better bet than the Tories."

Tennant appeared in a party political broadcast on behalf of the Labour Party during the 2005 General Election campaign. Although he has made critical comments about the Conservative Party in the past, including in the Radio Times, this is the first time that his political stance has been widely reported by the mainstream media.

Ginger Clarification

Wednesday, 6 January 2010 - Reported by Marcus
The new Doctor might have just uttered a few words so far, but his remark about still not being ginger has proved controversial with many grasping the wrong end of the stick. Perhaps egged on by comments in several newspapers, the BBC has received 143 complaints about the line, forcing the corporation to put out a statement clarifying that the Doctor was disappointed not to be ginger.
We would like to reassure viewers that Doctor Who doesn't have an anti ginger agenda whatsoever. This was a reprise of the line in the Christmas Invasion episode in 2005, when David Tennant discovers that he's not ginger, and here he is, missing out again - disappointed he's still not ginger.

In addition, the Doctor's previous companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) and his new one Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) are both redheads.
Further media items on this story can be found in this Doctor Who in the Media article.

JepodyMeanwhile, just 3 days after his debut on BBC America, the Eleventh Doctor turned up on the quiz show Jeopardy! The $800 question in the 1st round, under the category "Is This a Rerun?" was: "Matt Smith is the latest actor to be this Sci-fi Doctor, previously played by Peter Davison and Tom Baker". All three of the contestants appeared to know the answer.

Press Reaction

Saturday, 2 January 2010 - Reported by Marcus
The passing of the Tenth Doctor is covered extensively in Saturday's papers. Beware reviews do contain spoilers of the episodes.

The Times has a minute by minute description of the story which it says is a great entrance and a great exit and has a look forward to the Moffat years while The Mail has a big photo feature on the episode. The Guardian describes the outgoing production team as masters. The Sun claims there was a huge electricity surge in the UK as the population switched on their kettles as the episode finished although The National Grid's website appears to contradict this. The paper's reviewer hated the episode calling it an embarrassing spectacle of overacting.

The Herald thought the story was funny and sad, scary and uplifting, threatening and comforting while The Telegraph felt that David Tennant said farewell to the series in thrilling yet emotional style.

Online, Den of Geek says the episode was an 80 minute exercise in just how much David Tennant is going to be missed and Airlock Alpha says the real heart of the episode was the interaction between Bernard Cribbins and Tennant, with both actors able to turn even the smallest piece of dialogue into something spectacular. SFX gives the episode five stars calling it a great finale with very clever writing, and incredibly sad yet resonant final words.

Matt Smith's local paper The Northampton Chronicle says the new Doctor will make the town proud.

The episode commentary, the last with Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner, is now on the BBC website.

Press Notes

Wednesday, 30 December 2009 - Reported by Marcus
A new clip from The End of Time - Part Two has been made available today. An audio version of the clip was played on Who on Who on BBC Radio 2 and the full version was seen later on Alan Carr Chatty Man.

David Tennant and Catherine Tate have sparked off a debate on how to pronounce 2010. The topic was one of those discussed in last Saturday's Radio 2 show hosted by the pair when Tennant claimed that the BBC compliance rules insisted on twenty-ten while guest Bernard Cribbins said older people would prefer two thousand and ten. Although the BBC later denied there was any rule, the discussion has been picked up by many papers including The Telegraph in the UK and several papers around the world.

Meanwhile The Daily Mail, always quick to find a story to knock the BBC, has claimed that Tennant has taken over the BBC this Christmas. The paper claims the actor will have made over 75 appearances on the BBC over the holiday period and accuses the BBC of freezing out young acting talent by giving audiences an overdose of Tennant. Conservative MP Nigel Evans has been quoted by the paper as saying : "Sadly the BBC seem to have got themselves stuck in the rut of chasing ratings and going populist". he added "Their public service remit was always about bringing on fresh talent", perhaps forgetting that relative newcomer and 'fresh talent' Matt Smith takes over the role of The Doctor shortly.

Press Roundup

Sunday, 27 December 2009 - Reported by Marcus
The BBC has uploaded an exclusive clip from Part Two of The End of Time onto the official website. You are strongly advised not to click on the link if you have not seen Part One as it contains major spoilers from the end of Part One. The clip is only available on the official site in the UK.

David Tennant has spoken of his love for Doctor Who and how it lead him to choose acting for a career. Speaking on Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio Four, to be broadcast Sunday morning, he tells how it was watching Jon Pertwee in the role as a child, that made him want to go into the profession. He also tells of meeting Tom Baker while Baker was playing the fourth Doctor.

Various papers have reported the UK ratings for Christmas day with The Times describing the figures as disappointing for the BBC, while the Guardian concentrated on the BBC's dominance of the chart. The Mirror focused on EastEnders, but describes The End of Time as terrific, while The Star discribed the Christmas audiences for BBC One as huge.

Press Notes

Thursday, 24 December 2009 - Reported by Marcus
Russell T Davies has told The Guardian how he took Pop Idol as his inspiration for the rebirth of Doctor Who. He tells the paper how he used to go to a friend's house to watch the final with several others. He says "I wanted to do that with drama. If we could have the voice at the beginning of The X Factor introducing each episode I would do it."

In a somewhat different interview, Davies has caused controversy by voicing his concerns about the future of the BBC, should the Conservative Party win the 2010 General Election. Davies told The Mirror he fears the BBC will be dismantled by the Tories and is convinced that a move to freeze the licence fee by the Conservatives will be the beginning of the end for the corporation. "They'll dismantle it slowly. It'll get smaller and smaller until it just supports Radio 4 and some news. I'll come back and fight them at the barricades. I feel a bit like Alan Bennett, who said his favourite things about Britain were the BBC and the NHS." Davies's remarks were picked up by many UK papers, but not it seems in Conservative Central office. When journalist Matt Withers rang their press office for a statement he was told they wouldn't comment on it, because "Mr Davies is a backbench MP and, as such, his opinion isn't necessarily party policy".

Veteran actress June Whitfield has told The Sun of a particular problem she had while recording The End of Time, when the script called for her to goose David Tennant, "Well, he is so thin that it was difficult to find the bottom!" says Whitfield, 84. "But this was in the script, I promise."
