Big Finish: September Releases

Friday, 21 September 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Big Finish have released details on the latest adventures for the Doctor and his companions in September.
Gods and Monsters sees the long-awaited rematch between the Seventh Doctor and his arch enemy Fenric. "With four companions, a multitude of godlike creatures and an army of Haemovores, this will be a battle to remember," says producer David Richardson. Written by Mike Maddox and Alan Barnes, Gods and Monsters finds the Doctor in grave danger, with his latest manipulations having gone wildly out of his control. And he's got a lot of explaining to do to four companions wanting to know just why they've all been brought together... Gods and Monsters is the epic conclusion to the latest trilogy of Seventh Doctor main range adventures, and pulls together threads which have been building since Ace's first appearance way back in the TV story Dragonfire and which have continued through recent audio range releases!

The Burning Prince - Peter Davison and Caroline Langrishe. Photo: Big FinishPrepare for a journey into the heart of the Drashani Empire, as three different Doctors take turns paying a visit and discovering that time can change many things... The Burning Prince begins the new linked trilogy, starring Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor. "I have to admit this is one of my favourite scripts of the year," David says. "John Dorney has delivered a rollercoaster ride of a story, which takes the Fifth Doctor into the direst peril. Strap yourselves in and enjoy!"

Project Nirvana is the latest in Cavan Scott and Mark Wright's 'project' series of tales, which traditionally deal with the sinister secret organisation known as The Forge. In this latest tale, former Forge operative Lysandra Aristedes and Private Sally Morgan take a trip into the past on the Doctor's orders and learn some surprising things... Tying in to events in the recent Doctor Who main range releases Black and White and Gods and Monsters, Project Nirvana explores the backgrounds of these two very different soldiers and gives some insight into what the Black TARDIS team was up to before they were 'discovered' by Ace and Hex.

Finally, Season Three of The Lost Stories concludes this month with The Rosemariners, a four-part Second Doctor story that has been completed by Donald Tosh which finds the Second Doctor and his companions examining the mysteries of a closing Earth Station. Frazer Hines once again provides his recreation of Patrick Troughton.

As a special promotion, episode one is available for FREE as the latest Big Finish podcast. The episode can be heard via the Big Finish website.

The wedding of Prince Kylo and Princess Aliona was meant to change all that – a blessed union between the Houses, a new hope for the Empire. Until Aliona's wedding galley crash-landed on the planet Sharnax – and all contact was lost.

Because this is all part of his bigger picture. And Aristedes is going to learn something about herself...

The Rosemariners (available to order)
by Donald Tosh
starring Frazer Hines, Wendy Padbury, with David Warner and Clive Wood

The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe find themselves on an almost deserted space lab. Earth Station 454 is being closed down, mothballed, its staff relocated. Years of research and co-operation are coming to an end and only distinguished xeno-botantist Professor Arnold Biggs remains on board.

But is there more to the closure than meets the eye? For the operation is being supervised by the Rosemariners of the planet Rosa Damascena. Their terrifying Commander, Rugosa, seems to have something to hide. Who is he? What do the Rosemariners want with the scientists? And what is the secret of Rosedream?

In a world where no one is quite what they seem, and deadly plants lurk around every corner, the Doctor will have to use all his ingenuity just to stay alive... just to stay himself.

Big Finish: new covers released

Tuesday, 11 September 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Big Finish have released the covers for some of the forthcoming stories due towards the end of the year.

November sees the release of a sequel, as producer David Richardson comments:
I'd loved John Dorney’s The Rocket Men, and really wanted to bring them back. Matt Fitton – who's a writer we've quickly grown to admire at Big Finish – has delivered a thrilling sequel, in which the heroic Steven takes on the might of the jet-packed marauders.
Return of the Rocket Men
by Matt Fitton
starring Peter Purves, with Tim Treloar

Once before the Doctor battled the sadistic Rocket Men and once before he won. But when the dreaded pirates of the skies raid a remote frontier planet, he's not the only member of the TARDIS crew for whom they are old enemies.

Steven Taylor knows them well. Back in his days as a pilot, on his twenty first birthday, Steven's ship was brought down by the malevolent Van Cleef. He barely escaped with his life. And now he's going to have to go through that again.

But this time round, he knows what happens. And he knows there's no way out. Steven Taylor has to make a choice. A choice where either way... he loses.

December's regular adventure stars Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor and Sarah Sutton as Nyssa, 1001 Nights will comprise four one-episode stories with a linking theme. Guest stars include Alexander Siddig (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Nadim Sawalha (Syriana) and Malcolm Tierney (Terror of the Vervoids).
1001 Nights
by Emma Beeby, Gordon Rennie, Jonathan Barnes, Catherine Harvey
starring Peter Davison and Sarah Sutton

A long time ago, two travellers came from far away...

In the perfumed palace of an omnipotent Sultan, a girl must tell stories to keep the man she cares about from a cruel and horrible death. She spins tales of distant lands she has visited with a mysterious traveller, of fabulous creatures and fantastic adventures – and of a blue box that can travel in time and space.

Meanwhile, in the dungeons below the throne room, there lurks a secret which will bring down the kingdom – perhaps even the universe.

Can the Doctor and Nyssa escape from this never-ending story before the final chapter spells their end?

Subscribers to the regular range that includes 1001 Nights will be eligible for this year's free adventure, Night of the Stormcrow, which stars Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor and Louise Jameson as Leela. David says:
This is a scary one! Writer Marc Platt has explored that uneasy feeling you get of being wide awake at 3:30 in the morning, and the fear that there’s something lurking in the darkness.
Night of the Stormcrow
by Marc Platt
starring Tom Baker and Louise Jameson

High atop Mount McKerry sits the observatory. For years now it's been watching the skies. Now something's watching back. Something dark and huge that blots out the stars. Something with giant wings. Something that kills.

When the TARDIS is struck mid-flight, the Doctor and Leela crash-land on the mountain to find they are not the only aliens to be visiting. Beings of nothing infest the complex, staff members are dead or mad. As the survivors argue amongst themselves and attempt to take advantage of the situation, a creature vast and terrible is coming ever closer.

A creature called... Stormcrow.

The story will be released commercially in December 2013.

Big Finish: The Auntie Matter

Monday, 3 September 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Big Finish have revealed the cover for The Auntie Matter, the first story in the second season of The Fourth Doctor Adventures; it stars Tom Baker with the late Mary Tamm, and is due to be released in January 2013.

Producer David Richardson says:
It's astonishing to think that it's only four months until the launch of Season Two, And it’s desperately sad to think Mary is no longer with us to enjoy the public unveiling of Romana’s return to the Fourth Doctor’s side.

However, I have no doubt at all that Mary would want us to forge ahead with releasing these stories as planned, and she'd want them to be a huge success. She certainly worked very hard to finish them, despite her illness.

The story concerns how, whilst the two time travellers are hiding out at the Doctor's house on Baker Street in the early 20th Century, Romana attracts the attentions of Reggie, who is very eager to introduce her to his Aunt...

The cast includes Robert Portal as Reggie, Lucy Griffiths as Mabel, Alan Cox as Grenville, with Julia McKenzie as the sinister Aunt Florence.

The Auntie Matter
by Jonathan Morris
starring Tom Baker and Mary Tamm

"Well, old Reggie's finally gone and done it now, hasn't he?

It had all started so well. Finally found a filly worthy of taking to Basset Hall for the blasted Aunt's approval, bright young charmer called Romana, then everything goes to pot. Now some Doctor cove's running round the place waving a wand at everything and people are firing weapons at us. It's all terribly uncivilised.

Looks like your hero's goose might be a trifle on the cooked side. It's all so dashed frightening. I wonder if it'll be done for tea?"

Big Finish: October Releases

Wednesday, 22 August 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Big Finish have released information for two of the stories due to come out in October, featuring one character's debut and another's final adventures.

First up is the two-disc full cast audio play version of the Virgin New Adventure Love and War, which stars Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor with Sophie Aldred as Ace, and introduces the (novel) Doctor's other long term companion Bernice Summerfield - a character that first launched Big Finish back in 1998 with Oh No It Isn't!, and still portrayed by Lisa Bowerman.

Producer Scott Handcock said:
It's been a joy to work on the Bernice Summerfield range as we approach her twentieth year, and we always knew we wanted to do something special. As well as a few original dramas, we pitched the notion of a one-off Companion Chronicle to David Richardson - jokingly suggested we call it War and Love as a nod to her roots in the New Adventures. Then typically, as David does, he came back with an even better nod to her origins: a full-cast adaptation of the novel that spawned her.

And so, after conversations with Paul Cornell, Jac Rayner, Sylvester, Sophie and Lisa (of course), we found ourselves tasked with the daunting opportunity of bringing a much-loved slice of 90s Doctor Who to a brand-new audience... and I think we've done it justice!
Love and War (available to pre-order)
by Paul Cornell, adapted by Jacqueline Rayner
starring Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred and Lisa Bowerman

On a planet called Heaven, all hell is breaking loose.

Heaven is a cemetery for both humans and Draconians - a final place of rest for those lost during wartime. The Doctor arrives on a trivial mission - to find a book, or so he says - and Ace, wandering around Joycetown, becomes involved with a charismatic Traveller called Jan.

But the Doctor is strenuously opposed to the romance. What is he trying to prevent? Is he planning some more deadly game connected with the coffins revered by the mysterious Church of Vacuum and the unusual Arch that marks the location of a secret building below ground?

Archaeologist Bernice Summerfield thinks so. Her destiny is inextricably linked with that of the Doctor, but even she may not be able to save Ace from the Time Lord's plans.

This time, has the Doctor gone too far?

Sadly, the month will also see the release of The Last Post, featuring the final performance of Caroline John as Liz Shaw, who died in June. Series producer David Richardson said:
Carry’s death was a very sad blow for everyone at Big Finish, and the whole Doctor Who world. We deliberated for a long time as to whether we should hold back the release of this story until 2013, but Carry’s husband Geoffrey Beevers kindly suggested we should go ahead as planned. It is what Carry would have wanted.

Carry really enjoyed working on this script, and the chance to work with Rowena Cooper as Liz’s mother, Emily. It was such a happy recording day that we had made plans for a sequel, which was storylined. But sadly it was not to be.
The Last Post
by James Goss
starring Caroline John, with Rowena Cooper

People are dying. Just a few, over a period of months... but the strange thing is that each person received a letter predicting the date and time of their death.

Throughout her time as the Doctor’s assistant, Liz Shaw has been documenting these passings.

Her investigation ultimately uncovers a threat that could lead to the end of the world, but this time Liz has someone to help her.

Her mother...

Big Finish: August Releases

Monday, 20 August 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Big Finish have released details on the latest adventures for the Doctor and his companions in August.
There’s been a mystery haunting followers of the Seventh Doctor stories at Big Finish. Why is the TARDIS white? Why is there a black TARDIS? And where is the Doctor? All is revealed in Black and White, in which four companions collide – Ace (Sophie Aldred), Hex (Philip Olivier), Aristedes (Maggie O’Neill) and Sally (Amy Pemberton). And what they discover about each other, and the Doctor (Sylvester McCoy), will rock their worlds...

Black and White is written by Matt Fitton, and guest stars Stuart Milligan (The Impossible Astronaut and The Day of the Moon) as Garundel.

Meanwhile, The Masters of Luxor by Anthony Coburn has finally been released 49 years after the script was originally written for television! Coburn, who wrote the very first Doctor Who story An Unearthly Child, originally devised Luxor as the second story, but it was ultimately replaced by Terry Nation’s The Daleks. Those original scripts have been adapted by Nigel Robinson as part of the Lost Stories range, and performed by William Russell and Carole Ann Ford with Joseph Kloska guest starring as Tabor and the Perfect One.

"This was such a momentous story to make," says producer David Richardson. "It really felt like an important piece of Doctor Who history. Anthony’s script is so dark and character-based, and it builds to a really doom-laden finale. If you enjoyed Farewell Great Macedon on our First Doctor Box Set, then you should love this – I was determined to reassemble the whole team from that story, from William and Carole, to Nigel, Lisa Bowerman as director and Toby Robinson on sound design and music. The results, I think, are quite heart-breaking."

Finally this month’s Companion Chronicle is The Uncertainty Principle, performed by Wendy Padbury as Zoe, accompanied by her daughter Charlie Hayes as Jen.

"We’re back with the older Zoe," says David, "as the mysterious Company tries to ascertain what she might remember of travelling through time and space – and they force her mind back to a journey to Earth, where nothing is certain."

Black and White (available to order)
by Matt Fitton
starring Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred and Philip Olivier

The TARDIS arrives in the land of the Danes, where a young warrior seeks to rid the kingdom of Hrothgar from a cruel and terrifying demon. The brave young warrior is Beowulf; the monster is Grendel... or so his name will one day be written. But what's written down in black and white is sometimes very far from the truth – as the Doctor knows, and his companions are about to discover.

The Masters of Luxor (available to order)
by Anthony Coburn, adapted by Nigel Robinson
starring William Russell and Carole Ann Ford, with Joe Kloska

The TARDIS is drawn to a mysterious signal emanating from a seemingly dead world. Trapped within a crystalline structure, the Doctor and his friends inadvertently wake a vast army of robots that have lain dormant for many, many years. Waiting… for the Masters of Luxor.

The Perfect One wants to become more than just a mockery of a man, and will stop at nothing to achieve it. But will the cost prove too great?

The travellers are about to uncover a horrifying tragedy. A tragedy that threatens to engulf them all.

The Uncertainty Principle (available to order)
by Simon Guerrier
starring Wendy Padbury, with Charlie Hayes

In the future, Zoe Heriot is a prisoner of the mysterious Company, which has evidence that she travelled through space and time with the Doctor. Zoe’s memories have been blocked by the Time Lords, but the Company is determined to break through this conditioning...

And so Zoe recalls a journey to Earth in the past, to the funeral of a young woman called Meg, who was involved in scientific experiments that are bringing forth sinister alien creatures. Only the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe can stop them...
