New Radio Times

Tuesday, 18 September 2007 - Reported by Anthony Weight

The latest issue of the BBC's ever Who-friendly Radio Times listings magazine is released in the UK today, and contains various items of interest to Doctor Who fans.

Billie Piper is the issue's cover star and the subject of an interview inside the magazine, promoting her new ITV2 drama series The Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Interviewer Zoe Williams writes: "She won't be drawn on Doctor Who (will she return before David Tennant departs?) - for personal or contractual reasons, we can only guess."

On page three, Radio Times editor Gill Hudson asks her readers to guess what connects three of the major television events of the week - Billie Piper's new role, the first appearance of Christopher Eccleston in BBC Two's run of the US fantasy series Heroes, and the return of Sarah Jane Smith. "Right first time!" Hudson tells her readers.

The Sarah Jane Adventures is listed as one of the picks of the week on page four, and on page 31 is given a one-page preview feature, in which Gareth McLean interviews Russell T Davies about the show and his return to children's television, where he started out with dramas such as Dark Season in 1991, from which a photo of Kate Winslet and Jacqueline Pearce is shown.

"I loved the sort of dramas that were set in this world, but had an otherworldliness to them," Davies tells McLean. "They had all this possibility that there were fantastic forces at work beneath the ordinariness of the world. How marvellous!" Davies also reflects on how he never felt children were his natural audience, and on the changes to children's television since he worked in it. He concludes that "With the likes of Disney investing so much money in children's TV, I do feel optimistic about its future."

The Sarah Jane Adventures is one 'Today's Choices' for Monday September 24th, with reviewer Mark Braxton commenting: "The show looks perfect for cheering up Mondays; it confirms the promise of the pilot and has its heart in exactly the right place."

The magazine also confirms that the next episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures will follow on the CBBC Channel at 5.30pm on Monday, immediately following the previous episode's BBC One premiere.

Finale Cast Developments, Christmas Update - Spoilers

Saturday, 30 June 2007 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
Tonight's broadcast of Last of the Time Lords, the third season finale of Doctor Who on BBC1, was telecast at 51 minutes long -- the longest episode of the series since its 2005 revival -- and brought with it some of its own headline news items, including major cast developments. Though much of this information will likely be in the mainstream press within the next day or two, we've protected the most important Doctor Who related updates below in the spoiler tags; click on it for details.
Confirming the essence of a story first reported several weeks ago in the Sun, Freema Agyeman left Doctor Who as a series regular at the end of this episode, choosing to remain behind with her family in present-day England. Agyeman's most recent denial in "Radio Times" stated that she was notsacked from the series, contrary to the Sun report; however, as Outpost Gallifrey and other sites have reported, the news did not deny that Agyeman was leaving as a series regular (nor that she was not remaining by her own choice). The end of "Last of the Time Lords" suggests that we will see Martha again, as she gives her mobile phone to the Doctor (David Tennant), likely as a guest star next series; press reports from the Mirror this past week indicate that the fourth series of Doctor Who will see a new companion next year, with Martha making an occasional appearance. (At the time of the Mirror report, "Last of the Time Lords" had not yet aired, and while the article mentions she "won't be in every episode next year, but will appear in the occasional episode for both Doctor Who and Torchwood," it is likely that this was a bit of obfuscation of the as-yet-unannounced departure.)

UPDATE: Russell T Davies has promised on tonight's Confidential that there will be news soon (a possible press release early next week) about Freema's future with the programme, likely as a guest character or recurring (like John Barrowman this series).

John Barrowman also departs from Doctor Who again, as Captain Jack Harkness returns to his base of operations in Cardiff for the second series of "Torchwood" to be aired later this year.

John Simm will (obviously, from the story) not be returning as the Master in subsequent episodes; however, the theft of his ring by a woman (perhaps Lucy Saxon but possibly someone else entirely) indicates that the Master will perhaps be back in next year's episodes.

Meanwhile, the upcoming 2007 Christmas special will be entitled Voyage of the Damned and has something to do with the voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic, judging from the name of the vessel on the life ring found within the TARDIS in the close of today's episode (not to mention, the ship's hull through the walls of the console room!) There is no word as yet as to who will join David Tennant for the episode, although there has been much media speculation about singer Kylie Minogue (we're not sure yet if these are real or simply press hype.)

Tuesday, 26 June 2007 - Reported by Kenny Davidson

The new issue of Radio Times, on sale Tuesday 26th, features two collectors edition covers promoting the season finale of Doctor Who. Click on the previews below for larger views of the two covers.

The third preview is the one picture formed when the covers are placed side by side, and this print is available to purchase from the Science and Society Picture Library.

The new issue of the magazine visits the set of Doctor Who for the series finale in the company of Freema Agyeman. It includes behind the scenes pictures and comments from Freema and hints from Russell T Davies on the plot. ("The final episode [Last of the Time Lords] is a massive quest, it’s very stirring, and there are some very dark moments in amongst the fun.")

This week's Radio Times features a large double-sided panoramic poster offer. One side features the Doctor, Martha and Jack inside the Tardis, and the other side has a rogues' gallery of recent enemies, including the Angels, Dalek Sec and its mutant hybrid, Scarecrows and the Judoon. The poster measures 124 x 45cm, and is available with two tokens and a fee for postage. The first token is in this weeks issue, the second in next weeks.

Also in Radio Times this week, an interview with Torchwood star John Barrowman on returning to Doctor Who. Click on the spoiler tag to read an extract.
"It's not the Captain Jack from Torchwood. He's not angsty, he's not moody; he's determined, but in a different way. Captain Jack from Doctor Who is a little more light-hearted, because he’s back where he wants to be. Although he loves the Torchwood team, one of his main objectives over the past couple of years has been to find the Doctor, to figure out why Jack is the way he is. Now he's there, he can let the Doctor take the responsibility for everything and he can sit in the background a bit."

New Radio Times

Tuesday, 29 May 2007 - Reported by Anthony Weight

The latest issue of the BBC's Radio Times listings magazine is released across the UK today, and in addition to all of its regular Doctor Who coverage it contains special praise for this Saturday's forthcoming episode, "The Family of Blood", selected as the magazine's 'Drama of the Week'.

"Those who dismiss Who as lightweight fluff should give tonight's story a try," writes reviewer Mark Braxton on the magazine's 'Today's Choices' page for Saturday. "The conclusion to a 1913-set two-parter, it's rich, complex, resonant and BAFTA-worthy on its own merits... it also contains the best description of the Doctor we've ever heard on the show. Take a bow, Mr Cornell."

In addition, a moment from the episode is selected as the magazine's 'Moment of the Week', described, again by Braxton, as "an awful shadow of things to come... It's a tiny moment, but one that's eloquence itself."

The magazine's regular preview feature this week focuses on an interview with guest star Jessica Hynes, who explains how she deals with questions from her son and his friends about her relationship with Doctor Who. "I have to explain that I'm already married and it's only a pretend snog," she tells interviewer Danny Scott. Hynes also maintains that the offer to appear in Doctor Who is "the phone call you always dream of getting."
