The BBC has confirmed that Doctor Who will return to screens worldwide on Saturday 12th April 2025.

The eight-part series will be screened on BBC One and Player in the UK and on Disney + worldwide. It stars Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor and Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra

It has also been confirmed that the Scottish actor Alan Cumming will feature in the second episode as the voice of Mr Ring-a-Ding. Cumming previously played King James in the 2018 story The Witchfinders.

Mr Ring-a-Ding is a happy, funny, singalong cartoon, who lives in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally. However, in 1952, after years of repeats in cinemas across the land, Mr Ring-a-Ding suddenly looks beyond the screen and sees the real world outside - and the consequences are terrifying.

Russell T Davies, Showrunner said:

Only Alan Cumming could give a runaway cartoon so much wit, malice, danger and fun. He makes the whole universe of Doctor Who wilder and madder than ever, and it’s an absolute honour to welcome him on board the TARDIS.

The new season also stars Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday as well as previously announced guest stars Rose Ayling-Ellis, Anita Dobson, Christopher Chung, Michelle Greenidge, Jonah Hauer-King, Ruth Madeley, Jemma Redgrave, and Susan Twist.

Doctor Who is produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios for the BBC and Disney Branded Television.

The Savages - New Animation heading to DVD

Thursday, 12 December 2024 - Reported by Marcus
The Savages - Logo (Credit: BBC Studios)

The First Doctor story The Savages has been animated and will be released next year.

The four-part series, first broadcast between May and June 1966, will return as an animated series to be released on DVD, Blu-ray and a limited-edition Blu-ray Steelbook next spring.

With the original master recording lost, as many of these television episodes where historically wiped after transmission, the BBC Studios Home Entertainment teams worked with original audio recordings and soundtracks of all four episodes and a team of animators to bring back to fans this long-lost story arc.

In this early story, the Doctor (William Hartnell) and his travelling companions, Steven (Peter Purves) and Dodo (Jackie Lane), arrive on an unnamed planet where they encounter two distinct people - the Elders and the Savages. They soon discover the Elders are the evil ones, draining the primitive Savages for their life source to remain young and powerful forever. This story marks the final appearance of Purves as Steven.

This three-disc release will include all four 25-minutes animated episodes in colour and black and white, as well as exclusive bonus features.

Paul Hembury, Executive Producer commented:

We have a wonderful team of creators who work together to bring these lost Doctor Who stories back to life through animation. It’s always an exciting time when a story nears completion, and we prepare to share it with the fans, for whom it has been made.

The story is available for pre-order on Amazon

BBC Studios have announced that the 1969 Patrick Troughton story The War Games, has been colourised with the new edition being shown on BBC Four and iPlayer this Christmas.

Originally aired in 1969, The War Games marked the end of an era for the Second Doctor who, with his companions Zoe and Jamie, land in a battlefield that appears to be a World War I military zone—but all is not as it seems.

They soon discover that soldiers from different historical periods have been abducted and are being manipulated in a cruel game. As they work to uncover the mystery behind the War Lord and his twisted experiments, the Doctor faces one of his most difficult challenges.

For the first time, these original episodes have been colourised and enhanced with updated visual effects edited into a new, 90-minute feature-length experience to appeal to today’s modern audiences. With updated sound and a new score, this new version of The War Games offers fans and newcomers even more ways to watch the much-loved classic story.

In addition, the episode will also feature the Second Doctor's never-before-seen regeneration into the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee), alongside recovered footage not seen since the original broadcast.

Russell T Davies, Showrunner said:

From the day I arrived back on Doctor Who, this was the plan.  To colourise old stories and bring them back to life.  And on Doctor Who Day itself, it’s great to announce this, celebrating the show’s wonderful heritage with an all-time-classic.  It looks so vivid and new - and for fans of black-and-white, the story in its original form will stay on BBC iPlayer, so everyone wins!  I actually watched this transmit in 1969, at 6 years old, terrified of the Roman soldiers, fascinated by villains with glinting spectacles, and in awe of the Doctor’s brand new origin. Now fans old and new can enjoy it all over again.

The story will be screened on BBC Four on 23rd December 2024.

All New Tales of the Tardis

Monday, 17 June 2024 - Reported by Marcus
Pyramids of Mars (Credit: BBC)

Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson, are to appear in a new Tales of the TARDIS with The Doctor and Ruby embarking on a journey to the Pyramids of Mars

Following on from Saturday’s episode, The Legend of Ruby Sunday, in which the Doctor and Ruby came face to face with one of the Doctor’s greatest enemies, Sutekh, played by original actor Gabriel Woolf, the pair are set to take a trip down memory lane in Tales of the TARDIS: Pyramids of Mars.

The brand-new episode will feature an appearance from the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) for the very first time in Tales of the TARDIS.

Originally airing in 1975, the four-part story Pyramids of Mars sees the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) and Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) battle the almighty Sutekh. The classic story has been remastered into a feature-length omnibus episode that’s had a cosmic makeover, with updated visual effects.

Tales of the TARDIS: Pyramids of Mars sees the TARDIS land in 1911. In the grounds of the Old Priory, Egyptian mummies are walking and the Doctor and Sarah find that an ancient and powerful evil is menacing mankind.

And now back on board the Remembered TARDIS, the Doctor and Ruby pause in battle to reflect on their recent adventures – all before they fight to save the universe in this Saturday’s highly anticipated season finale Empire of Death. The finale also sees Gabriel Woolf return as the legendary Sutekh, 48 years after his original role as the villain.

Phil Collinson, Executive Producer, says:

Revisiting the rich history of Doctor Who is endlessly thrilling and this is no exception. It’s so exciting to bring back Tales of the TARDIS again, and to revisit a classic enemy of the Doctor. Gabriel Woolf as Sutekh, returning to terrify a whole new generation of children in a blistering season finale is what makes this show so special and appeal to so many across the generations.

Experience the moment the Doctor first met his ferocious enemy Sutekh when Tales of the TARDIS: Pyramids of Mars airs on Thursday 20th June at 8 pm on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer.

Doctor Who season one is now available on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Disney+ in the rest of the world, where available.
