Black Archive Special - An Adventure in Space and Time

Black Archive - Special (Credit: Obverse Books)

The latest instalment in the Black Archive series from Obverse Books looks at the 2013 docu-drama based on the creation of Doctor Who, An Adventure in Space and Time

‘The following programme is based on actual events. It's important to remember, however, that you can't rewrite history. Not one line. Except, perhaps, when you embark on an Adventure In Space And Time...’

In 1966, William Hartnell is about to record his final scenes as Doctor Who. Having helped establish the series as a smash hit for the BBC, he is not keen to go, but ill health means he simply can't continue.

Tracing the story of the series creation from Sydney Newman's first suggestion of a new science fiction series to Hartnell leaving the role behind, An Adventure in Time and Space is more than just a biopic of William Hartnell; it's the story of the creation of a television legend.

David Rolinson is a lecturer at the University of Stirling. He teaches and writes on a wide range of topics but specialises in docudrama and terrorism. He wrote a guide to Alan Clarke and co-edited The Art of Invective, a collection of Dennis Potter’s non-fiction writing.

AN ADVENTURE IN SPACE AND TIME is available now in paperback and electronic formats, direct from Obverse Books and from selected online retailers.

After the neutronic war, our Dalek forefathers retired into the city, protected by our machines.’

The second Doctor Who serial, The Daleks (1963-64), establishes both the principle that the Doctor fights alien monsters and the most iconic of those he fights.

Oliver Wake looks at its influences, from HG Wells’ The Time Machine through Nazi eugenics to the movies of the atomic era, and at how Terry Nation’s script was translated through sound and visual design into perhaps the most important Doctor Who story of all.

The Nightmare returns!

Friday, 13 March 2026 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Bret Vyon menaces the Doctor (Credit: BBC Studios)

The BBC and Film is Fabulous! have announced the recovery of the William Hartnell episodes The Nightmare Begins and The Devil's Planet, two previously missing episodes of the epic twelve part story broadcast over the winter of 1965/66, The Daleks' Master Plan!

From the BBC press release:

The episodes, thought to be lost forever, were found by Film is Fabulous! – a charitable trust run by film collectors, cinema lovers and vintage television enthusiasts. They approached BBC Archives after finding them in a private collection. BBC Archives has worked to restore the original 16mm telerecordings – meaning viewers will be able to watch them in the best possible condition on BBC iPlayer.

Noreen Adams, Director of BBC Archives said:

We’re thrilled to have worked with the team at Film is Fabulous! to bring these lost Doctor Who episodes to viewers on BBC iPlayer this Easter. BBC Archives has been working to restore the original recordings and update these to broadcast quality, ensuring fans can enjoy a little extra treat with their Easter Eggs this April.

As well as their availability on BBC iPlayer, Film is Fabulous! have also announced there will be a special screening of the episodes on 4 April.

The recoveries bring the current count of missing episodes of Doctor Who down to 95, a number that hasn't reduced since the announcement of the recovery of The Enemy of the World and most of The Web of Fear in 2013. It means the first quarter of the story is now back in the archives, and enables us to now see more of Adrienne Hill's portrayal of short-lived companion Katarina, and of Nicholas Courtney's first role in the series as Bret Vyon, long before he became regular character Brrigadier Lethbridge-Stewart.
