The BBC has launched the process to find a production company to create the next series of Doctor Who.

The corporation has published its tender document, which is intended to result in the production of a new series of the programme to be screened in 2028/2029.

An unknown number of episodes would be produced, including specials. If successful, the BBC would have the option to create a second series.

The process has been launched after the decision by Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf to withdraw from the plan to produce a Christmas special this year and to allow a completely new production team to take over the direction of the show.

Under the process, the BBC would retain all rights to the series, including broadcast rights. The Corporation wants the series to continue to be based outside of London and ideally in Wales, where the series has been made since the return in 2005.

The successful applicant will have a plan to develop writers and actors to work on the new series. The budget will be confirmed if the first part of the application process is successful. 

Interested parties must first submit an eligibility application to make sure they meet the basic requirements of the process. If this application is accepted, a 3-page editorial outline of a new series will be required. Applicants will then be invited to an interview process where proposals will be scored against published criteria.

As well as developing ideas for the story of the doctor, plans will need to include ideas for a new companion with a full backstory to engage viewers. Episodes must deliver scares, jeopardy, and tension and celebrate courage, intelligence, and compassion. 

Iconic foes can be used, but original ideas are encouraged. The show must be relevant and surprising as well as cinematic and and destinctive. 

The process closes at 1400 on 2nd October 2026. The BBC hopes to award a contract in March 2027, and the series will appear on screens at the end of 2028.
