Dispute over Downtime DVD Release

Wednesday, 21 October 2015 - Reported by Dan Collins and Marcus
Reeltime Pictures have announced the DVD release of the spin-off adventure Downtime, a direct to video production originally released in 1995 and featuring the character of Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart, as played by the late Nicholas Courtney.

The story was devised as a sequel to the second Doctor serials involving the Great Intelligence, The Abominable Snowmen and The Web of Fear, and included the return of Victoria Waterfield and Professor Edward Travers, as played by Deborah Watling and her father Jack Watling; it also saw the return of investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith, reprised by Elisabeth Sladen. The video was also notable in introducing the character of the Brigadier's daughther, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, now a firm favourite in the ongoing series of Doctor Who on television.

The character of the Brigadier was created in 1968 for the story The Web of Fear, written jointly by Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln, who authorised the original video production. However plans for Reeltime to release the drama on DVD have been contested by the Executor of the Haisman Literary Estate, Haisman's granddaughter Hannah Haisman-Hatt. She posted on Facebook:
It has been brought to my attention that Reeltime Pictures and One Media are releasing Downtime, the Doctor Who spin-off film made in 1995, on DVD. This is being done so without my consent or permission. As Executor of the Haisman Literary Estate, and thus copyright holder of Lethbridge-Stewart, Professor Travers, the Great Intelligence and the Yeti I should have been approached over this.

Attempts to negotiate have fallen on deaf ears, and my rightful claim has been refuted the producers. I have now been forced to take legal action to protect the copyright of my grandfather, Mervyn Haisman, after their refusal to renegotiate an agreement made twenty years ago for a film made for straight-to-video release only.
Reeltime Pictures have disputed her claim, with a spokesman informing Doctor Who News:
Reeltime Pictures has been approached by Hannah Hatt regarding the agreement we signed with her grandfather, Mervyn, in 1995. As we explained to her, the agreement is still in force and covers any exploitation that we might choose to undertake. Certainly no other party involved in the project has raised an issue with their agreements and we have assured her that no renegotiation is necessary.

There is little else we can do at this time other than to wait upon any legal representation she might make.

This is not the first time a dispute has arisen over characters and objects created for Doctor Who. In 2013 the son of Anthony Coburn, the writer of the very first story, claimed ownership of the TARDIS.

Commentaries to be released for The Enemy of the World and The Web Of Fear

Friday, 9 October 2015 - Reported by Chuck Foster
On the eve of the second anniversary of their publicised recovery, Fantom Films have announced a special project to provide commentaries for The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear, the two returned Season Five stories starring Patrick Troughton that were released 'vanilla' on DVD and via iTunes. Who Talk! will see cast and crew brought together to discuss the two stories, under the guidance of commentary moderation stalwart Toby Hadoke.

The commentaries will be released on both CD and download formats, and will feature Deborah Watling for both stories, with Enemy represented by Mary Peach, Milton Johns, Carmen Munroe and Bill Lyons, and Web by Ralph Watson, John Levene, and Derek Martin; production reminiscences are provided by Sylvia James and Roger Bunce. In addition, the still unaccounted for episode three of the latter story will feature former BBC Archivist Sue Malden, who gives insight into the BBC policies of wiping and archiving material, as well as missing television in general.

Producer Paul WT Ballard says:
Commentaries have long been a favourite part of my viewing of any of the classic Who DVDs, and we thought it was a huge shame to let these two brilliant stories pass under the radar, and set about gathering quite a stellar line-up to commentate on them.
He also advised:
The only way we can make these and future releases viable is by fans supporting the project and buying copies, rather than bootlegging them. Were there to be any future returns - and I'm sure we're all hopeful of that - then we would want to be able to look at repeating the exercise because it's a hugely culturally important one.

The two releases will be published in November 2015, and will be available to pre-order at a discounted price. See the Fantom Films website for full details.

Germany: Pandastorm Pictures changes DVD release schedule

Monday, 24 August 2015 - Reported by Pascal Salzmann
Pandastorm Pictures (Credit: Pandastorm Pictures)German DVD distributor Pandastorm Pictures sent out a newsletter today announcing changes to the DVD format and to the release schedule.

Instead of the previously reported two volumes of Sixth Doctor adventures (containing Season 22 plus The Twin Dilemma and Season 23), Pandastorm is going to release three sets now, splitting Season 22 in two parts.

Here is the complete newsletter, translated from German:

Dear Doctor Who fans,
while many of you are still waiting in excitement for the release of The Five Doctors this week, we are currently working on the releases of the sixth Doctor. The first volume will be out on 27th November 2015.

We originally planned to release the dubbed episodes of the sixth Doctor in two volumes. At the time we didn't know that the included bonus features of Volume 1 would make it 10 DVD's instead of the planned 7 DVD's. Because of very expensive authoring, post-production and production of this set, we would have to increase the price - which would lead to lower sales in the retail stores.

That is why we decided to produce a 5-disc-set for Volume 1, making it three volumes instead of two. We hope you understand.

This is the new release schedule:
