Recent Set Reports

Tuesday, 28 March 2006 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

Three set reports from the past week's filming (most of it last Wednesday and Thursday) in Wales, courtesy readers Emma Sandrey, Paul Mount and Timothy Farr; click on the spoiler tag to reveal the text.
Emma Sandrey:

Yesterday I was lucky enough to see some filming just outside the Maelfa shopping centre in Llanedeyrn. Camille Coduri and the newly announced Marc Warren were doing a rather tense scene. It seems the Maelfa area was doubling-up as the Powell Estate - St. David's cars had been turned into Powell Estate Motors - and graffiti and posters were put up all around to create a run-down effect. It also looks like it's set in autumn because leaves were being thrown around everywhere. Oh and Phil Collinson, one of the producers, was also on the set.

The scene involved Jackie confronting Elton Pope about a photo of Rose that he'd taken and she had found. I think [though I'm not 100% sure] that Elton is meant to be dating Jackie. So understandably she gets upset and has a go at him. Elton explains that it's the Doctor he was after. Jackie then went on about it's hard being the one who's left behind and how that in turn hardens you. She also said she'd protect 'both of them' her whole life. [I don't know who that refers to, either Doctor/Rose or Mickey/Rose I think]. Then she went off in a huff.

The scene was repeated about 10 times so they could get different angles. There was a lot of noise because of traffic [the buses go by every 7 minutes - possibly the worst place to shoot] and it started raining at one point.

I also know there was other filming yesterday on Cecil Street in Broadway. Both inside and outside of a launderette. Both Billie and David were involved that. A friend tells me there was lots of running up and down the street.

Additionally the day before that there was filming in town, at the Central Library and before that they were shooting in a house in Heol Pentwyn, Whitchurch.

I assume all the filming was for episode 10 although we do know for sure that the stuff with Marc Warren was definitely for that part.

Paul Mount:

I took a little detour on my way to the gym tonight. Needless to say, I didn't get to the gym and am now back home having frozen off every possible freezable bit by standing in the Hayes in Cardiff in the middle of....an Auton attack!!

The long version?? Okay....made my way to the area behind/alongside the Central Railway Station in Cardiff. A number of the usual vans and lighting rigs and a couple of large arc lights fully illuminated. Not much sign of life but some people lurking near the vans. Couldn't help thinking something was going on somewhere so wandered into the city centre. In the hayes, outside La Fosse (where the restaurant interiors for 'Rose' were shot and within spitting distance of St David's centre, the scene of the major Auton attack) yet more illuminated lights, a camera, some metal chairs set up. One or two security guards. Curiouser and curiouser. Suddenly....the distant sound of screams. Lots of screams. Traced it to an area a few hundred yards away, near the Library area. Here are a couple of dozen extras all carrying shopping etc. At first I thought they were just curious members of the public watching what was clearly filming for Dr Who despite the absence of anything discernibly recognisable as being from Dr Who....until I saw a technician in the background walking about with an Auton prosthetic mask in his hand!! Something's afoot!! But here's the fun!! "Action!" All the people around me startinmg running and screaming, panicky. There's me in the middle of it all, freezing in my fleece, hands in my pockets. What could I do? Obviously....I ran and screamed too, running discreetly off set so I could watch from a more sensible distance. So if you see a stocky cold-looking bloke in a blue fleece in episode 11....that'll be me then!!

The scene was rehearsed/recorded a few times and then the whole unit moved off to the Hayes. Here's where it got interesting. More rehearsing of people running and screaming, unmade-up Autons amongst trhem (including the Auton bride....yaay, she's back!), a taxi with a Henrik's livery was manoeuvred into place, then a motorbike.. Cue the smoke, burning debris, Hustle's Marc Warren dodging amongst the chaos and nearly getting run over by the taxi. After a few rehearsals the Autons were sealed into their masks (they still don't join up at the back) and the attack scene was filmed again. Looks like those who weren't impressed by the Auton break-out in 'Rose' might be a little happier this time..

Filming wrapped up about 9.30pm and eveyone toddled off.

Timothy Farr:

On my way to catch the train at around 4.30pm on Wednesday, 22nd March, following a text tip off I wandered past Baker's Oven (a cafe under the library at the back of the St David's Centre). There was an Any Effects van and a glazier's van outside, plus workmen inside one end of Baker's Oven, although most of it was still open for business. It's my supposition that the real windows were being carefully removed from Baker's Oven so that safely shatterable sugarglass ones could be substituted for filming later on. A similar situation occurred for filming of Rose in Working Street in 2004 when a sports wear shop became Classic Bride for the sequence where the three Auton Brides come to life. Ironically enough, a genuine wedding outfitters is adjacent to the opposite end of Baker's Oven from where the work was being done.

Series Two Date, Titles and More News

Tuesday, 28 March 2006 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine, reaching subscribers today, has confirmed rumors that Series Two will debut on Saturday, April 15 at 7:00pm. Widely rumored as the target date by fans and even the press as early as last November, this is the first official confirmation anywhere of the date of transmission of the first new episode, "New Earth".
Also revealed in the issue are the final three titles for the season. The Impossible Planet is the name of episode 8, the first half of the two-part story taking place on an alien world which is followed up by episode 9, "The Satan Pit". Fear Her is the title for episode 11, written by "Life on Mars" writer Matthew Graham. Finally, the magazine confirms the titleLove & Monsters (using the ampersand, in fact, not the word "and"), which was reported last week in various newspapers during the episode's filming. (Other sites reported different titles for episodes 8 and 11, despite our earlier reports here that they were false.)
Additionally, DWM has revealed that, following each broadcast, Doctor Who Confidential - the documentary series about the making of the program - will air on BBC with writer Mark Gatiss ("The Unquiet Dead," "The Idiot's Lantern") narrating the documentary series, replacing last year's narrator Simon Pegg.
Finally, a few miscellaneous items of note about series two: writer Marc Platt, who wrote the Big Finish audio "Spare Parts" which inspired the Cyberman two-parter being seen this year, will receive a fee but the producers stress the story is not a rewrite. Also, "In the interview with Julie Gardner and Phill Collinson, they state that they are in their busiest period now, and that the script for the final episode is awesome. There is also a quote in the news section that allays the fears of the Barbara Windsor and Trisha Goddard cameos stating they are 'clever.'"
(Please note: Outpost Gallifrey held off reporting this information from DWM, which leaked earlier this week onto the Internet -- out of respect to the magazine's editors -- until the magazine began being received by paid subscribers today.) (Thanks to Steve Barnet, Daniel Hirsch, Michael Noth)

I think we could have gone on forever, tweaking and refining, but I'm thrilled that we didn't, because I do think they're beautiful..."

Also this issue, there are exclusive previews of the first two episodes of the new series, New Earth and Tooth and Claw, and a chat with Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel writer Tom MacRae. Russell T Davies tells us about getting in the removal men in an unmissable double-length Production Notes column, plus there's a preview of the new 'Tardisodes' for your mobile phone. There's also a trip back to medieval England in a fascinating Fact of Fiction article on Sarah Jane Smith's first story The Time Warrior. Meanwhile, young Mickey Smith takes centre-stage in a brand new comic strip adventure The Lodger, by Gareth Roberts and Mike Collins.

US Debut Ratings

Wednesday, 22 March 2006 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

According to information from the programming department of the Sci-Fi Channel, Doctor Who did well its first night in broadcast. 1.58 million viewers tuned in to watch "Rose," says the report, with 1.61 million viewers watching "The End of the World" and .78 million viewers each watching "Rose" and "The End of the World" in their 11pm and 12am repeat slots. These numbers are somewhat lower than the standard viewing the channel received for its broadcasts of its original series "Stargate: Atlantis" and "Battlestar Galactica" in the same time slots, but higher than any broadcast of syndicated series that evening (including repeats of "Firefly" and "John Doe"). Final numbers including Nielsen rankings should be available within the next week or two. (Thanks to Joey Reynolds)

Three Hugo Nominations for Doctor Who

Wednesday, 22 March 2006 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

Doctor Who has been nominated for three prestigious Hugo Awards this year, according to an announcement made yesterday by the award's administrators and the 64th World Science Fiction Convention, L.A. Con IV. Taking three of seven slots in the "Best Dramatic Presentation: Short Form" category are the Doctor Who episodes Dalek written by Robert Shearman,Father's Day written by Paul Cornell, and The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, written by Steven Moffat. The three are running against an episode of the new "Battlestar Galactica" series, the Pixar animated short "Jack Jack Attack," and two live events, the stage play "Lucas Back in Anger" and the "Prix Victor Hugo Awards Ceremony," both performed at last year's World Science Fiction Convention in Glasgow, Scotland. (The latter was written by writers Paul McAuley and Kim Newman, both of whom have, coincidentally, written for Telos Publishing's Doctor Who novella range). The "Short Form" category was created out of the "Best Dramatic Presentation" category in 2003 to distinguish between films and television episodes, and describes a presentation lasting ninety minutes or less. The Hugo Awards, named for science fiction pioneer Hugo Gernsback, are the science fiction community's most prestigious awards, given out each year since the early 1950's; they will be presented at the Worldcon convention taking place this year in in Anaheim, California on August 26, with several of the writers expected to be in attendance.
