Radio Times countdown

Wednesday, 21 March 2007 - Reported by DWNP Archive

The new edition of Radio Times - issue dated 24-30 March - has joined the countdown to the start of Series Three with a column entitled "All New Who" in its weekly "Behind The Scenes" feature.

It lists what readers can expect to come in the publication, among which will be a guide by Russell T Davies to every episode of the new series, and includes quotes from David TennantFreema Agyeman and Phil Collinson.

Tennant says: "Each script that comes in just seems to be bigger than the last - that's what has kept it so exciting. The scale is bigger, the locations are more extraordinary."

Agyeman tells of the pressure of the show, saying: "I've been filming since August and it's crazy. Every time I think I've got it under control, something else comes up - so I'm not taking anything for granted!"

And Collinson talks of the pressure of thinking up new monsters. "This year there's probably a bigger selection - we've gone a bit more monster-y," he says.

The Doctor Who special edition of The Weakest Link is one of the RT Choices for March 30, while the "Next week in RT" strap at the back of the listings magazine carries a picture of Tennant and Agyeman and trumpets the publication's 14-page preview of the new series that will be included.

The Radio Times covering the first episode of Series Three, ie, issue dated 31 March to 6 April, should reveal the titles of episodes three, five and 13 - the last remaining unknown ones.

Wilkie link continues

Tuesday, 20 March 2007 - Reported by DWNP Archive

The Manchester Evening News has an interview with Martin Wilkie, son of the late classic era visual effects designer Bernard Wilkie, in his capacity as a special effects adviser and director of the Up Close exhibition, which opens in the city at the end of March.

Martin, whose surname is spelled "Wylkie" in the article, tells how he and his brother (Simon) acted as guinea pigs when their father brought home prototypes and new characters from Doctor Who to see how scary they found them.

He says of the exhibition: "These are all genuine props from the series, so it is as near to behind the scenes as you can get. The kids won't be too scared - we find it is the parents who are generally more scared than the kids."

The online article has a gallery of seven images.

Bernard Wilkie, who co-founded the BBC's special effects department with Jack Kine, died in May 2002. Kine died in January 2005.

Big Finish Update

Friday, 16 March 2007 - Reported by Jarrod Cooper

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine included titles and plot details for the Doctor Who audios for the rest of the year...

Renaissance of the Daleks from a story by Christopher H Bidmead. Slated for release this month, this story sees the Doctor and Nyssa do battle with Daleks in Rhodes, America, Vietnam, and the 'Pantemporal Ambience'.

April's release contains two stories. The first is I.D. by Eddie Robson, which features the Sixth Doctor in the thirty-second century stumbling across organic-digital interfacing, personality surgery and an army of Scandroids on a planet piled high with technological junk. Urgent Calls is the second story on this release, and is the first of the new one-part 'Virus Strand' stories. This story sees the Doctor learning that one phonecall can change everything...

May also has a dual-story release, starting with Exotron by Paul S Sutton. Here the Fifth Doctor and Peri are menaced by the ravening Farakosh in a tale of broken hearts and bioengineered nightmares. Urban Myths finishes out the release with a tale of planetary destruction and culinary confusions.

Marc Platt brings us Valhalla in June, in which the Seventh Doctor finds himself without a companion on a moon of Jupiter.

Dual-releases return in July with The Wishing Beast by Paul Magrs. In this three-part story, the Sixth Doctor is unexpectedly expected by some weird sisters. This release also includes The Vantiy Box, a single episode set in a cosy northern backstreet.

Nicholas Briggs shows us Frozen Time in August and lets us join the Seventh Doctor on an expedition to Antarctica with Lord Barset.

In September, Steve Lyons introduces the Fifth Doctor, Peri, and Erimem to Vlad the Impaler in Son of the Dragon.

The 100th Big Finish Doctor Who Release comes out in September. Earthstorm by Stephen Baxter gets the Sixth Doctor and Evelyn get caught up in a global catastrophe in 1963.
