More tickets available for free-to-attend Series 8 launch party

Thursday, 7 August 2014 - Reported by John Bowman
More tickets to a Series 8 launch celebration that is free to attend are up for grabs.

The Twelfth Knight Party is being held in London on Saturday 23rd August, starting at 3pm, with Deep Breath and any accompanying Doctor Who programming broadcast that afternoon and evening being shown live on big screens.

Organised by Jeremy and Paula Bentham together with Tony Clark, the party - which is open to all people aged 18 and over - was announced before it emerged that the series opener would be simulscreened at cinemas. This has led to cancellations for ticket applications for the free event.

Jeremy told Doctor Who News:
The announcement of nationwide Deep Breath cinema screenings has led to some changes of plan by around 100 people who had earlier pre-registered to attend the party.

I'm therefore delighted to have both the time and the opportunity to offer these "spares" to people who would like to see for free the opening episode of Series 8, plus any other Doctor Who programming being aired while the party takes place, on super-size TV screens in a party environment rather than a popcorn one.
Food and drink will be available to buy at the venue, which is installing extra 55-inch screens.

To apply for tickets, e-mail Jeremy at jjbentham@aol.com by the revised closing date of Sunday 17th August, using the subject line Twelfth Knight ticket applications and stating your name as well as how many people will be in your group.

Tickets and exact details of where the party is being held will be despatched the next day by e-mail. Please note that admission will be by ticket only.

London Transport links for the weekend are currently reported as being good, although people are still urged to consider their transport options for getting home afterwards, as the event will finish late.

Since the show returned to TV screens in 2005, the organisers have held a series of highly popular event parties in London, most recently the Doc Lands @ 50 Party, which took place on 23rd November 2013 to mark the programme's 50th anniversary.

The world premiere screening of the series Opener Deep Breath is taking place at St David's Hall in the Welsh Capital, attended by Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, alongside showrunner Steven Moffat.

Moffat told BBC Radio Wales he believes Capaldi's Doctor will go down well with fans.
He's a brand new, slightly shocking, extremely funny, charismatic Doctor, and it's that wonderful thing - he's very, very different and yet he's exactly the same. That's is the thing about the Doctor, the Doctor is always kind of the same, but you couldn't have a bigger contrast to the Matt Smith version.
BBC Wales director Rhodri Talfan Davies said:
Doctor Who is getting even bigger and even better - and it's a real thrill that the show's fans here in Wales will be the very first to see the new Doctor at this very special premiere screening. Doctor Who has been made in Wales for almost 10 years - and we're so proud of its worldwide success.
A further screening takes place later today on London's South Bank, before the team head of to Seoul at the start of their dash around the world.

Planet 55 statement regarding Doctor Who animations

Thursday, 7 August 2014 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Animation studio Planet 55 have issued the following statement regarding their involvement with creating animated episodes of Doctor Who:

Planet 55 Studios (Credit: Planet 55 Studios)There have been many queries about Planet 55 Studios's work on Doctor Who and whether we are doing any more.

To date, Planet 55 Studios has completed work on three Doctor Who animated reconstructions for BBC Worldwide's DVD range: The Reign of Terror, The Tenth Planet and most recently The Moonbase. We really enjoyed creating those but they are the only Doctor Who stories Planet 55 Studios have worked on and there are no plans to work on any more.

At the moment the company is focused on animation projects completely unconnected to Doctor Who.

The release comes as the status of the last expected classic series DVD, The Underwater Menace, remains uncertain.

The Dalek was created for Doctor Who's Fiftieth Anniversary, at Snugburys Famous Ice Cream, a farm and dairy based in the West Midlands, known for its annual production of straw figures.

Standing at 35 feet high, the sculpture took over 700 man hours to build. It is made from 6 tons of straw, held up by a frame containing 5 tons of steel. It features moving parts and audio.

Doctor Who Pop Up Shop - Sydney

Wednesday, 6 August 2014 - Reported by Marcus
A new Doctor Who pop up shop comes to Sydney later this week, giving Sydney-siders their first taste of some of the new products due to be released over the next few months.

The shop will open its doors on August 7th at 10am at Shop 9.28A World Square Shopping Centre, 644 George St, Sydney, just a few days before the new Doctor Peter Capaldi and his companion Jenna Coleman touch down in Australia as part of a major global tour to launch the new series.

James Corden to replace Craig Ferguson on Late Late Show?

Tuesday, 5 August 2014 - Reviewed by Alex Frazer-Harrison
US entertainment website The Wrap is reporting that James Corden, who played one- (or, rather, two-off) companion Craig Owens during the Matt Smith era, is being eyed to replace Craig Ferguson as host of CBS late-night chat show The Late, Late Show after Ferguson departs this December, just shy of his 10th anniversary as host. CBS has yet to officially announce anyone as Ferguson's replacement.

In the US, Corden is best known for his Tony Award-winning Broadway performance in the play One Man, Two Guvnors while UK fans best know him from the sitcom Gavin & Stacey. He appeared on Doctor Who as Craig in 2010's "The Lodger," 2011's "Closing Time" and he also played Craig in the made-for-DVD prequel to "Closing Time" called "Up All Night."

Ferguson, who announced his intention to step down as host of The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson earlier this year, is a well-known Doctor Who fan, who keeps a toy TARDIS on his desk, often brings the show up in conversation with guests, hosted the Doctor Who panel at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, and over the past few years has interviewed Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Alex Kingston, Jenna Coleman and Billie Piper (Smith and Gillan several times). His lyrical version of the "Doctor Who Theme" (in which he praised the show and "the triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism") went viral.

Ferguson is also a longtime friend of Peter Capaldi, who appeared on Late, Late Show in 2009 to promote the film In the Loop, having performed in a band with Ferguson in the early 1980s. It remains to be seen if Capaldi will be able to make an appearance before Ferguson departs.

CBS has so far refused to confirm or comment on the situation.
