Frederick Jaeger

Thursday, 26 August 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
Actor Frederick Jaeger, the German-born stage and screen actor who played Jano in "The Savages," Sorensen in "Planet of Evil" and, in his most prominent Doctor Who role, Professor Marius, creator of K-9, in "The Invisible Enemy," died on June 18 in Mallorca after a long illness, according to an obituary this week in "The Stage". Says the obituary, "[Jaeger] played a wide variety of characters but on screen he was often cast in military roles, playing German officers on British television and British officers in German productions." Among his many films are The Iron Petticoat (1956), Ice Cold in Alex (1958) and Voyage of the Damned (1976), and he was very prominent on the stage, including touring with Sir Ralph Richardson in Shakespeare productions. He spent his final years with his second wife, Elizabeth Griffits, at a farmhouse in Mallorca after he retired from acting. (Thanks to Chris Winwood)

Ghost Light Delay

Sunday, 22 August 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
As reported elsewhere, the DVD release of Ghost Light has been moved back one week, and will now take place on September 20. According to Steve Roberts of the Restoration Team, this is just due to "technical reasons," likely something to do with the pressing of the DVDs, and nothing to be concerned about; the extra week is just to give time to make sure they're done before release.

Space Pirates Info and New Stills!

Wednesday, 18 August 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
As we previously reported, the forthcoming DVD release Lost in Time will feature 90 seconds of film from the long-lost Doctor Who serial The Space Pirates starring Patrick Troughton, film that was located, we have learned, in some old canisters of film from the series "Dad's Army". The film footage featuers model spacecraft shots and some live action "space walk" footage from the first episode. Through a coincidence, one of the people looking through the canisters was Ralph Montagu of the Doctor Who Restoration Team... who promptly returned the material to the archives so that it could be used on the DVD release. The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine has a bit more detail on this and a couple of photographs; meanwhile, Outpost Gallifrey has been sent two photographs unused by DWM which features the Beta Dart undocking from the Alpha 1 beacon, and Alpha 1's compartments drifting apart. Click on each below for a larger version. (Thanks to Steve Roberts and the Restoration Team)

The Claws of Axos DVD

Wednesday, 4 August 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
As reported by Outpost Gallifrey some time ago about the story being on the 2005 list of DVD releases from BBC Worldwide, Roadshow/ABC Video in Australia - the licensees responsible for releasing the Doctor Who DVDs in that country - have announced that The Claws of Axos starring Jon Pertwee will be released there in April 2005 on DVD. This is in addition to the previously announced "The Leisure Hive" (October), "Lost in Time" (December) and "Ghost Light" (February). Of course, the date is always subject to change and no word as yet has been received as to its "official" status as a UK release, though it will likely be early in the year. Underwater Menace in Feb?

Tuesday, 3 August 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
While retailers have been reporting for some time that the BBC Radio Collection audio release of The Crusade is planned for February 2005, we now have word that, in fact, the long-delayed The Underwater Menace is due in February, according to a BBC Audiobooks customer service spokesperson. We don't know if this means that "The Crusade" was delayed, or both will be out at the same time, but we'll keep you posted. (Thanks to James Hadwen)

2005 DVD Rumors?

Tuesday, 3 August 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
While a report today on the Sci Fi Online site says that the first UK DVD release of 2005 will be the Patrick Troughton story The Mind Robber, it's been denied by the Restoration Team, who say that the first 2005 release is "definitely in colour"! Nor will it be either Attack of the Cybermen or The Claws of Axos, both of which we reported months ago were on the tentative 2005 list (and which, we still believe, will be part of the 2005 collection.) In fact, the first release is "something much more interesting than any of those," we're told. All these are, of course, just rumors until confirmed by BBC Worldwide.
