Christmas Invasion Press Pack

Wednesday, 23 November 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

As it did with last year's episodes, the BBC Press Office today has issued a new press pack with details of the forthcoming Doctor Who special "The Christmas Invasion". In addition to carrying the full synopsis of the episode on its first page (you can skip it if you don't want to know by starting on page two), the release profiles David Tennant andBillie Piper.
Some quotes from David Tennant: "It was funny, when I first got asked I just laughed! I found it hilarious and impossible! And I remember Russell, very perceptively, saying: 'Don't say anything now, because I know the experience is quite a weird one. But it's such a great job! I [mean], I get to play a Time Lord and have a TARDIS: you can't knock that! ... The fantastic thing about the regeneration process is that every time the Doctor goes through it, he changes to an extent. So as an actor, you get to work on a blank canvas where you don't have to worry too much about what has gone before. It's interesting, because he's always going to be the moral egalitarian, humanitarian, slightly wild, slightly anarchic bloke that he's always been. But because he's getting older he's moving on. He's seen it all before, every alien creature with a superiority complex. Viewers are going to see a slightly more no-nonsense Doctor and that is influenced by what Chris did with him. We are more aware that he's someone who fought a war, lost all his people and because he's the last Time Lord, the last authority in the universe, he's less indulgent, more ruthless. ... I wanted something that I'd enjoy wearing, an outfit that would look good and feel right. We also wanted something that was modern, without being specifically en vogue. I wasn't trying to create a Times Style article about it, but I'm glad people like it so much. I also wanted an outfit that wasn't too authoritarian. So that's why I opted for a scruffier-styled suit. It's more what you'd expect to see a student sporting than a college professor. And inevitably the look is influenced by the sort of things I like wearing. ... The regeneration process is a severe biological process which takes a fair bit of time. This is not good news for Rose and the rest of the world, because whilst he's going through this, the earth is being invaded by the Sycorax. It's a very difficult time for Rose. He hadn't prepared her for the changes he'd undergo. So whilst the Doctor is recuperating, Rose is trying to fathom out how she can save the world. She's also trying to understand how she feels about him now. ... The Christmas episode is a new start for the Doctor and Rose. They've got to rediscover each other and decipher whether they still feel the same about one another. Despite the new face, he is fundamentally the same bloke, he's still the Doctor and still has a huge amount of affection for her. However, it's not just the way he looks or the way he talks that is different. The Doctor's outlook on life has changed, as has the way he tackles situations. I think he's just hoping Rose can accept the changes and they can pick up where they left off."
From Billie Piper: "[Winning at the NTA awards] was the most amazing feeling.; I was so terrified and really thought one of the soap actresses would win. But when they said it was me, I was just amazed. It was such a strange, wonderful evening. I felt like I was having an out of body experience. .... Rose feels so unloved and isolated at the start of [The Christmas Invasion]. She's returned home to her mother and Mickey and as ever they are there for her. But she feels like she's lost her best friend. The earth is being invaded and Rose has no control over the situation. The Doctor, who is still going through the regeneration process, isn't there to give her the answers and she's scared. ... Kids love being scared. It's something I've learned since starting on Doctor Who. As adults we worry that kids can't cope with anything scary and that everything should be censored. But that is nonsense. Children are so inquisitive, and I'm sure will be asking themselves questions such as 'What if the tree came to life?' etc. It excites them. Part of the series' success is it challenges the viewers' imaginations, including the kids. ... Rose is very smart. She's very instinctive and has great strength of character. She's travelled all over the galaxy with the Doctor, and taken note of how he handles situations, so tries to mimic his actions. It's very amusing to see Rose trying to copy the Doctor, but she looks up to him. He's her best friend, her personal hero and she believes in him, so tries to act like him. Rose is so scared he won't want her to travel with him anymore. She has spent so much time with him, experiencing new and exciting worlds. She can't bear the thought that this could be the end and the thought of going back to reality, working in a shop, fills her with dread. ... I'm an absolute Christmas freak! I love the fact it starts in October now! However, this year for me it started in July as we were filming the Christmas special. It was slightly bizarre filming snow scenes in the middle of summer, but I was thrilled. It was great to start filming series two with this amazing, emotional and scary episode. I'm a huge fan of Christmas specials. It means so much to me that our show is going to go out on Christmas Day when all the families will be sitting down together, eating copious amounts of chocolate and drinking sherry. I have to be honest - I think I'm going to need a few sherries before I sit down to watch it, though!"

New Series Update and Red Button Episode

Thursday, 10 November 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine (#363) reveals another stunning development for the series: immediately after broadcast of 'The Christmas Invasion', digital viewers (digital, cable or Freeview) "will be invited to 'press their red buttons' to join the Doctor on a new adventure," meaning an additional special episode for the time period between the airing of the Christmas special and the start of series two. Written by Gareth Roberts and starring David Tennant (who has already filmed scenes for it), the digital feature is directed by Ashley Way and produced by Sophie Fante "in conjunction with the Doctor Who production team". According to executive producer Julie Gardner, "This is being treated as a full-blooded, sophisticated production, with [...] a brand new alien villain [...] and brand new sets [...] Viewers will even be able to use their remotes to fly the TARDIS!"
Meanwhile, the episode also discusses the new Children in Need special, which is written by Russell T Davies and directed by Euros Lynn: "it's a proper piece of Doctor Who - meaning it's not a spoof, or an interview, or a preview of the Christmas episode, or a [...] look behind the scenes; it's genuine new Doctor Who! [...] we've been planning this for months."
DWM confirms that Block Three of production, directed by Graeme Harper, is under way. Episode 5 is not called 'Parallel Worlds' (the real title is not revealed). Episode 4 ("The Girl in the Fireplace") will feature Angel Coulby as Katherine.
Finally, the new series has debuted in France on the new digital channel France 4. Says the official Doctor Who website, "To celebrate the Time Lord's arrival in France, Executive Producers Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner launched the show in Paris, and have been speaking to everyone from cutting edge trendsetters, Inrockuptibles and Technikart, through to all the national listings weeklies and even French National Radio. Hopes are high for Doctor Who - the French have a tradition for taking such shows to their hearts (they had four Buffy magazines), and it's part of a high-profile launch line up for their trendiest new digital channel." The site also confirms that the series will arrive in Italy later this month.

Christmas Day Airing

Thursday, 3 November 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

This year's holiday special "The Christmas Invasion" will air on Christmas Day, December 25, on BBC1. BBC Newsreported the announcement from the BBC, as did the official Doctor Who website. This morning's The Sun says the episode will be sandwiched in between two hour-long episodes of EastEnders "to complete a three-hour telly fest", while the Mirror says that the show will be broadcast against two Coronation Street specials on ITV. The transmission time is yet to be confirmed. The BBC and ITV traditionally battle each other for ratings on Christmas Day.

Christmas Invasion Trailer

Wednesday, 26 October 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
As reported by several viewers on our Forum, BBC1 tonight aired a promotional trailer for "The Christmas Invasion" with an overview of Series One after the BBC News at 10pm. The trailer is very much akin to the one shown in June, but with additional footage (from last year's episodes) on it, and the note about the "countdown" being on at the end.

Series Interviews

Tuesday, 25 October 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
Dark Horizons has an interview posted with Adam Garcia, who stars in the Christmas special. "Chatting with some grunt from Showtime Australia during the announcements of the iF award nominations, the actor confirmed his taking part and speaks highly of the new Doctor David Tennant - 'He is amazing and his dream as an actor was to play Dr Who and then when it was not happening, he was really disappointed but he was like "I'm still gonna become an actor". Now he actually gets to live his dream and he is marvelous, he really is exceptional'. He continued about his love for the new show: 'I have been a fan of Dr Who since I was (obviously) little and at the read throughs -you know just getting to read the scripts is amazing because they keep them all secret - you get told you're doing it and then you go "Oh! This is what I am doing!" And then you spend a lot of time looking at walls going "They're coming straight for me!" pretending things.'" Dark Horizons also mentions our coverage of the Charlotte Church rumors and other casting information.

Anthony Stewart Head appeared on the Jonathan Ross show on BBC Radio over the weekend. Head was full of praise for David Tennant, who he said was naturally "quirky" and a really nice person to work with. He implied he's playing a school teacher who is not nice, but not necessarily the villain. There was talk about how the old K9 prop still had problems, which Jonathan later compared to Fiona Philips' dancing. Also later in the show, they talked about the toy Daleks.

BBC Radio Cornwall recently reported an actor named Spencer Hawken would be appearing in the second series, possibly as "an evil Time Lord" in two episodes. The rumor mill notes that "by the end of the second story the character, named John, is not as he should be..." There's no word about whether this is credible or simply a publicity item.

Christmas Day Invasion?

Wednesday, 14 September 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
The BBC News story about the TUC conference (see mention in Press Clips, below) made a surprising mention today in its last paragraph. The paragraph originally read "A Christmas special is due to be broadcast on Christmas Day, followed by a 13-part series next year" but has been altered later on Wednesday to state "A Christmas special is due to be broadcast at Christmas, followed by a 13-part series next year." Outpost Gallifrey believes that the item was merely an error and was later corrected, as we have reported that the current information we have suggests transmission the day after Christmas, on Boxing Day, December 26.

First Photos - Updated!

Wednesday, 27 July 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

The first photos taken from location work on the second series of Doctor Who have made their way to the Internet: what appears to be a Czech photo archive of David Tennant pictures from the Splash News photo service, including pictures of Tennant and Piper rehearsing and some eerily decorated Santas that appear to be aliens or zombies beneath. The photos can be found by clicking here; the first 13 in the set are the ones from this filming, with other shots of Tennant in other locales. (Don't bother registering for larger photos; you won't be able to gain entry.)
UPDATE: A second collection of images from official press photographers is online, from the World Entertainment News Network; you can click here to view them. These also include Camille Coduri and Noel Clarke as well as David Tennant and Billie Piper.

Breaking News: Series Three and More - Updated Twice!

Wednesday, 15 June 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

At tonight's BAFTA screening of "The Parting of the Ways," the final episode of this first series of "Doctor Who," producer Russell T Davies and BBC executive Jane Tranter announced that a third series of the show has now been commissioned, including a second Christmas special. They also noted that Billie Piper (Rose) would be in all the episodes of the second series, although whether she would return for the third was apparently still being discussed, and that John Barrowman (Captain Jack) will be returning to the series next year but will not appear in the first block of episodes. (Says our correspondent, Barrowman was also in the audience at the screening, and when Davies announced his return, he yelled out, "And I'm willing to get naked again, too!")

Also mentioned at the BAFTA screening was a title for this year's Christmas special: The Christmas Invasion. That, and the season two block of thirteen episodes, will go into production in July. More details as we get them.

Update 15 June 2230 GMTCBBC News has confirmed the story. Says the report, "Just days before the current run of the sci-fi show is due to end, its makers have revealed that there are at least two more series to come. ... In addition to two more series, there will also be Christmas specials for 2005 and 2006, the show's makers said. That means Dr Who fans have a total of 28 more episodes to look forward to when the current series ends. Billie Piper will continue playing Rose until at least the end of series two. ... The show's main writer, Russell T Davies, said: 'What was most pleasing is that people have been watching this series as a family. I think a children's show should have a full range of emotions including grief and comedy.' A few hints have also been dropped as what viewers can expect from the new episodes: The new doctor will have a new outfit, we'll be seeing more of Rose's boyfriend and her mum, and scary aliens called the Cybermen will be making a return."

Update 16 June 0220 GMT: Several other items reported from the BAFTA screening: apparently transmission of series two will take place "early" in 2006 (like this year) and Russell T Davies will pen the one script that hadn't been assigned to a writer (at least not publicly). Also, word has it that there will be more episodes of Doctor Who Confidential, but we have yet to confirm this...

(Thanks to Jacob Weinstein and Keith Topping for the initial reports and everyone contributing updates including on our Forum!)
