Doctor Who Amongst Best Selling 2008 Calendars

Doctor Who has taken the fourth place in the best-selling 2008 calendars, according to Europe's biggest calendar maker, Danilo.

Celebrity favourites such as Robbie Williams and Kylie Minogue have dropped out of the top 10 in a chart that is dominated by sports heroes rather than the pop stars of recent years.

Doctor Who US Comic Interview

Cubicle 7 to publish Dr Who RPG

Angus Abranson, head of Cubicle 7 Entertainment Ltd, announced today that Cubicle Seven have been awarded the license to produce an official Doctor Who role-playing game based on the new series. The announcement was made at Dragonmeet, London's premier role-playing convention. Full confirmation, and further details will be made available, though a press release, which is to be issued at the beginning of next week.

Classic Series Toy Update

Character Options have announced the first in the new Classic Series range of figures. The first wave will include four single releases and two twin packs. There is currently not a release date. The list is still under negotiations and approvals, but Wave 1 is currently slated to include:

The Fourth Doctor in his Red velvet jacket from the story Revenge of the Cybermen. This figure will include two interchangeable heads - one with the hat, one without.

The Fifth Doctor with short hair as seen in the story Resurrection of the Daleks.

The Sixth Doctor in his patchwork frock coat with short hair as seen in Attack of the Cybermen.

Sea Devil complete with string vest.

Zygon with the Skarassen control device.

Voc Robots from The Robots of Death. This twin pack will include SV-7 (Super Voc) and D-84 (Dum Class).

Magnus Greel and Mr Sin from Talons of Weng Chiang will be the second twin pack.

Doctor Who on your mobile

BBC Worldwide's Digital Media division has announced a new content partnership with mobile operator O2.

BBC Worldwide will provide over 300 individual pieces of content under the deal, including video clips, wallpapers and ringtones from programmes such as The Office, Little Britain, Doctor Who, I'm Alan Partridge and League of Gentlemen. The content will be sold through the O2 Active mobile portal.

Grahame Riddell, head of strategic content partners at O2 UK, said the deal 'paved the way' for access to BBC material in a range of formats. BBC Worldwide said the range of programmes and formats available under the deal is expected to grow over time.

Peter Mercier, head of mobile at BBC Worldwide, said: "This is clearly a great deal for us in terms of getting our content in front of consumers and demonstrating how BBC Worldwide continues to innovate in the digital media sector."

Computer Game Latest

The UK computer game developer Ironstone Partners is working on a Doctor Who title for the Nintendo DS, Sony PlayStation2 and Windows PC platforms, according to Eurogamer.

As reported by Outpost Gallifrey last month, Top Trumps revealed plans for a video game that would be released for Christmas 2007.

Ironstone Partners has previously worked on other games based around the Top Trumps brand.

More Classic Series Figures

Character Options is to release a range of classic-era figures.

To be launched next spring, in association with BBC Worldwide, the five-inch figures will initially feature detailed replicas of classic Doctors, plus a number of monsters.

Jon Diver, the joint managing director of Character Group, said: "The resounding success of the Doctor Who TV series is made up of both new and existing Doctor Who fans.

"We have reacted to public demand and will be producing a range which greatly enhances the depth and quality of our existing line.

"The classic licence will broaden the collectability and enhance the position of the brand."

New Statue Range And Replica Props

The Iconic Replicas division of Product Enterprise has been granted licences for a statue range and replica props from the classic Doctor Who era.

It says the 1:6 scale polyresin figures will include the Fourth Doctor, the Sontaran Linx, Daleks, Cybermen and Zygons.

Sculpted by Andrew Teal and Sarah Aplin, they will be limited editions.

The first wave of the replica props - also to be limited editions - will include a 1:6 scale model of the Tardis from An Unearthly Child, a similar scale replica of the console from the same episode and the sonic screwdriver from the Tom Baker era.

Release dates have still to be announced.

Comic Book Resources News has a story about the newly announced Doctor Who comic book from IDW, along with some sample art from artist Nick Roche. Roche, who has previously drawn IDW's Transformers comic, told CBR News that as a teenager he watched repeats of Jon Pertwee stories, but considers the new series his favorite version of Doctor Who. He also talks about the challenges of drawing David Tennant.
