Big Finish: October Releases

Wednesday, 22 August 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Big Finish have released information for two of the stories due to come out in October, featuring one character's debut and another's final adventures.

First up is the two-disc full cast audio play version of the Virgin New Adventure Love and War, which stars Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor with Sophie Aldred as Ace, and introduces the (novel) Doctor's other long term companion Bernice Summerfield - a character that first launched Big Finish back in 1998 with Oh No It Isn't!, and still portrayed by Lisa Bowerman.

Producer Scott Handcock said:
It's been a joy to work on the Bernice Summerfield range as we approach her twentieth year, and we always knew we wanted to do something special. As well as a few original dramas, we pitched the notion of a one-off Companion Chronicle to David Richardson - jokingly suggested we call it War and Love as a nod to her roots in the New Adventures. Then typically, as David does, he came back with an even better nod to her origins: a full-cast adaptation of the novel that spawned her.

And so, after conversations with Paul Cornell, Jac Rayner, Sylvester, Sophie and Lisa (of course), we found ourselves tasked with the daunting opportunity of bringing a much-loved slice of 90s Doctor Who to a brand-new audience... and I think we've done it justice!
Love and War (available to pre-order)
by Paul Cornell, adapted by Jacqueline Rayner
starring Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred and Lisa Bowerman

On a planet called Heaven, all hell is breaking loose.

Heaven is a cemetery for both humans and Draconians - a final place of rest for those lost during wartime. The Doctor arrives on a trivial mission - to find a book, or so he says - and Ace, wandering around Joycetown, becomes involved with a charismatic Traveller called Jan.

But the Doctor is strenuously opposed to the romance. What is he trying to prevent? Is he planning some more deadly game connected with the coffins revered by the mysterious Church of Vacuum and the unusual Arch that marks the location of a secret building below ground?

Archaeologist Bernice Summerfield thinks so. Her destiny is inextricably linked with that of the Doctor, but even she may not be able to save Ace from the Time Lord's plans.

This time, has the Doctor gone too far?

Sadly, the month will also see the release of The Last Post, featuring the final performance of Caroline John as Liz Shaw, who died in June. Series producer David Richardson said:
Carry’s death was a very sad blow for everyone at Big Finish, and the whole Doctor Who world. We deliberated for a long time as to whether we should hold back the release of this story until 2013, but Carry’s husband Geoffrey Beevers kindly suggested we should go ahead as planned. It is what Carry would have wanted.

Carry really enjoyed working on this script, and the chance to work with Rowena Cooper as Liz’s mother, Emily. It was such a happy recording day that we had made plans for a sequel, which was storylined. But sadly it was not to be.
The Last Post
by James Goss
starring Caroline John, with Rowena Cooper

People are dying. Just a few, over a period of months... but the strange thing is that each person received a letter predicting the date and time of their death.

Throughout her time as the Doctor’s assistant, Liz Shaw has been documenting these passings.

Her investigation ultimately uncovers a threat that could lead to the end of the world, but this time Liz has someone to help her.

Her mother...

Pond Life

Wednesday, 22 August 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
More details have been released regarding the special online story Pond Life.

The mini-adventure, starring Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, will be available from the BBC's website from Monday 27th August, with each of the five parts expected around midday on consecutive days throughout the week; the entire story will then be made available on the BBC's digital television Red Button service on Saturday, 1st September.

The story is directed by Saul Metzstein, and written by Chris Chibnall, who said:
Pond Life provides us with a lovely opportunity to catch-up with Amy and Rory since we saw them at the end of the last series. It opens with the Ponds at home and gives us an insight in to just what happens when the Doctor drops in and out of their lives. Travelling with the Doctor is one of the greatest things you can do, but it's fun to spend a few moments looking at the chaos he can also bring.

Executive producer Caroline Skinner added:
Chris has written a beautiful, heartfelt and wickedly funny piece about the adventures the Ponds have been having with the Doctor since we last saw them on-screen. It's not long till the series itself will be back with a vengeance - but in the meantime, Pond Life is a truly heart-warming piece about our best-loved companions and their madcap relationship with their raggedy Doctor.

Some Publicity photos have been released for the special:

The BBC have also released a video featuring Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill introducing the story:

Doctor Who premieres 1st September for UK, USA and Canada

Wednesday, 22 August 2012 - (compiled by Marcus and Chuck Foster)
The new series of Doctor Who will premiere on Saturday 1st September, with the show being broadcast on BBC One in the UK at 7:20pm, and on BBC America in the USA at 9:00pm(ET).

United Kingdom (BBC):

For the UK, this places Asylum of the Daleks into the heart of Saturday prime time television, going head to head against the Ant and Dec ITV game show Red or Black?. The Doctor has faced the Geordie duo before, most notably for the return of the series in 2005 when Rose beat Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway by 2.5 million viewers. The Doctor faced Red or Black? last year when ITV1's HD ratings helped Red or Black? edge slightly ahead of Doctor Who, although the latter outrated the game show for the period the programmes were in direct opposition.

On BBC Two the Doctor will be up against BBC Proms 2012 where conductor John Wilson and his orchestra pay tribute to the composers and arrangers responsible for creating the Broadway Sound; meanwhile Channel 4 continues its coverage of the Paralympic Games.

The series will be preceded by a new mini-adventure, Pond Life, which kicks off online from Monday 27th August.

The time of broadcast for Asylum of the Daleks of 7.20pm is one of the latest for the series since it returned in 2005, with only Gridlock in 2007, School Reunion, and Rise of the Cybermen in 2006 being later in the evening.

Trivia: the Daleks have been used to launch the show a few times in its past, with Day of the Daleks in 1972, Destiny of the Daleks in 1979, and Remembrance of The Daleks in 1988 - Destiny also coincidentally premiered on 1st September!

United States (BBC America):

For BBC America, the premiere forms part of the channel's Supernatural Saturday themed evening.
Join the Doctor, his companions Amy and Rory (aka the Ponds) and numerous friends on their latest escapades through space and time where they puzzle an unexpected invasion of Earth, save a spaceship full of dinosaurs, don Stetsons in a Wild Wild West adventure and are even kidnapped by the Doctor’s oldest foe. The explosive series concludes with Amy and Rory’s heart-breaking farewell – a race against time through the streets of Manhattan. Will the Doctor really lose the Ponds forever? There’s only one way to find out…
The full press release can be read on BBC America's website. Meanwhile, BBC America have also released a new trailer to promote the series:

The announcement of 1st September confirms that the trailer witnessed by viewers earlier in the week citing the 8th as the launch was accidentally broadcast rather than being the finalised date.

Canada (SPACE):

SPACE have also confirmed a 1st September premiere, at 9:00pm(ET).
It looks like Steven Moffat really bottled up his Dalek-related urges last season and now he's letting loose in the most outrageous fashion. Not since the Russell T. Davies days have we seen this many Daleks congregating in one place, and not since.. ever have we seen so many different models of Dalek at once!

Doctor Who will air every Saturday at 9E/6P for five episodes (and stream online the following day), then there will be a short break until the Christmas Special!

If you want to join some SPACE friends to share in the journey, we'll be live at social.spacecast.com through every episode. Join us for some crazy theorizing, Pond feels and "MOFFAAAAAAT!"s every Saturday night between (or at least during the commercial breaks).

Launch Date Speculation

Tuesday, 21 August 2012 - (compiled by Marcus and Chuck Foster
Speculation continues over the launch date of the new series of Doctor Who, which, despite a number of Internet expectations, has yet to be confirmed by the BBC.

The return of the series was originally anticipated in the UK for the August Bank Holiday weekend, based upon the pattern of preview screenings of Let's Kill Hitler at the BFI and Edinburgh last year; this date had also been suggested by a number of US media outlets, though it seems that these reports were picked up through fan enthusiasm rather than official sources, especially with BBC America having already announced their series of four Doctor Who documentary specials over the August weekends. Also, when asked at the Asylum of the Daleks screening last week lead writer Steven Moffat would only indicate that the show will return "soon".

With the the 25th August ruled out, focus turned to the 1st September. BBC America have devoted an entire day to Doctor Who, showing the entirety of last year's series plus The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe - the latter's scheduling of two hours (8-10pm) suggested that perhaps there was a missing programme to show at 9pm. The date was also reinforced by iTunes listing the series as being available from 1st September. However, early morning viewers were treated to a trailer on BBC America earlier this week which specifically mentioned an on air date of the 8th September - however, the channel has now reverted to trailers saying the series is coming soon. It is unsure whether the trailer was a mistake or if BBC America jumped the gun on an announcement.

Meanwhile, in the UK the new edition of listings magazine Radio Times announces that "Doctor Who is back!", with the next issue (1-7 Sep) promising a free Dalek wallchart, plus interviews with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Steven Moffat - the latter also providing an episode guide to the new series. However, the magazine has in recent months carried a number of front-covers/coverage of new shows that aren't necessarily in the week of publication so it isn't clear-cut that Doctor Who will premiere in the UK on the 1st September, and the show is currently absent from the BBC Media Pack for that week, implying the series may have a later debut.

The situation is likely to be clarified later this week. Schedules in the UK for the week beginning 1st September will be finalised in the next couple of days, and the press pack for the week beginning 8th September is released on Thursday.

As soon as the date is confirmed it will be reported by Doctor Who News.

Big Finish: August Releases

Monday, 20 August 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Big Finish have released details on the latest adventures for the Doctor and his companions in August.
There’s been a mystery haunting followers of the Seventh Doctor stories at Big Finish. Why is the TARDIS white? Why is there a black TARDIS? And where is the Doctor? All is revealed in Black and White, in which four companions collide – Ace (Sophie Aldred), Hex (Philip Olivier), Aristedes (Maggie O’Neill) and Sally (Amy Pemberton). And what they discover about each other, and the Doctor (Sylvester McCoy), will rock their worlds...

Black and White is written by Matt Fitton, and guest stars Stuart Milligan (The Impossible Astronaut and The Day of the Moon) as Garundel.

Meanwhile, The Masters of Luxor by Anthony Coburn has finally been released 49 years after the script was originally written for television! Coburn, who wrote the very first Doctor Who story An Unearthly Child, originally devised Luxor as the second story, but it was ultimately replaced by Terry Nation’s The Daleks. Those original scripts have been adapted by Nigel Robinson as part of the Lost Stories range, and performed by William Russell and Carole Ann Ford with Joseph Kloska guest starring as Tabor and the Perfect One.

"This was such a momentous story to make," says producer David Richardson. "It really felt like an important piece of Doctor Who history. Anthony’s script is so dark and character-based, and it builds to a really doom-laden finale. If you enjoyed Farewell Great Macedon on our First Doctor Box Set, then you should love this – I was determined to reassemble the whole team from that story, from William and Carole, to Nigel, Lisa Bowerman as director and Toby Robinson on sound design and music. The results, I think, are quite heart-breaking."

Finally this month’s Companion Chronicle is The Uncertainty Principle, performed by Wendy Padbury as Zoe, accompanied by her daughter Charlie Hayes as Jen.

"We’re back with the older Zoe," says David, "as the mysterious Company tries to ascertain what she might remember of travelling through time and space – and they force her mind back to a journey to Earth, where nothing is certain."

Black and White (available to order)
by Matt Fitton
starring Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred and Philip Olivier

The TARDIS arrives in the land of the Danes, where a young warrior seeks to rid the kingdom of Hrothgar from a cruel and terrifying demon. The brave young warrior is Beowulf; the monster is Grendel... or so his name will one day be written. But what's written down in black and white is sometimes very far from the truth – as the Doctor knows, and his companions are about to discover.

The Masters of Luxor (available to order)
by Anthony Coburn, adapted by Nigel Robinson
starring William Russell and Carole Ann Ford, with Joe Kloska

The TARDIS is drawn to a mysterious signal emanating from a seemingly dead world. Trapped within a crystalline structure, the Doctor and his friends inadvertently wake a vast army of robots that have lain dormant for many, many years. Waiting… for the Masters of Luxor.

The Perfect One wants to become more than just a mockery of a man, and will stop at nothing to achieve it. But will the cost prove too great?

The travellers are about to uncover a horrifying tragedy. A tragedy that threatens to engulf them all.

The Uncertainty Principle (available to order)
by Simon Guerrier
starring Wendy Padbury, with Charlie Hayes

In the future, Zoe Heriot is a prisoner of the mysterious Company, which has evidence that she travelled through space and time with the Doctor. Zoe’s memories have been blocked by the Time Lords, but the Company is determined to break through this conditioning...

And so Zoe recalls a journey to Earth in the past, to the funeral of a young woman called Meg, who was involved in scientific experiments that are bringing forth sinister alien creatures. Only the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe can stop them...

The Doctor's Monsters

Monday, 20 August 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
I.B. Tauris have released details on their forthcoming book The Doctor's Monsters; written by Graham Sleight, the editor of Foundation: The International Review of Science Fiction, the book aims to explore the history and meanings of the monsters that have appeared in the series.

The Doctor's Monsters
Meanings of the Monstrous in Doctor Who
By Graham Sleight
Published on 10th September 2012 (pre-order)

Doctor Who has been on global television screens for nearly fifty years, and many of its most memorable protagonists have been its monsters, The Daleks, Cybermen, Slitheen, the Sontarans, Ood, Wirrn, and others. Entertainingly and provocatively written, and introduced by Who scriptwriter Paul Cornell, The Doctor’s Monsters takes a new look at these and many other creatures, and asks what inspired them and what lies behind them. If the Daleks are based on ideas of genetic purity, and the Cybermen on fears of transplant surgery, what about the Autons, the Zarbi, or the Weeping Angels?

Science fiction critic Graham Sleight examines stories from the whole of Doctor Who’s history to give this unique perspective on the series. Why are we so scared of monsters? Why do they look and act the way they do? How do they reflect the time and place that the series is broadcast in? Along the way, the book provides a history - from an unusual angle - of how this most enduring of TV science fiction series has created and recreated itself. The book also contains a comprehensive glossary of the creatures seen in Doctor Who.

New York event sells out in 20 minutes

Saturday, 18 August 2012 - Reported by Marcus
The demand for tickets for the upcoming New York preview of Asylum of the Daleks has been heavy enough to cause major problems for the ticketing site, where all 800 available tickets were sold in less than twenty minutes.

The special showing will take place at New York’s Ziegfeld Theater on August 25 followed by a live Q&A session with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and executive producer Caroline Skinner. Tickets were sold for the princely sum of 11c, plus a small service charge.

Comic Mix reports that shortly after the ticket release, the purchase system slowed to a crawl, with access severely limited. The site’s customer service number was also jammed as people attempted to see if aborted transactions resulted in a sale or not.

BBC America has apologized that the process didn’t go as smoothly as it could have done but have said they are pleased the event was so popular with fans.

The new Doctor Who series is due to launch on BBC America in early September, but no date has yet been officially confirmed.
