The Top Shows of 2005

Wednesday, 4 January 2006 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

This week's edition of Broadcast, the trade magazine, carries details of the top-performing UK television shows of the past twelve months, saying that "reality shows may have dominated the schedules but the big ratings stories were to be found in drama, with the triumphant return of Doctor Who, and in comedy, as Little Britain took the nation by storm." The paper notes, "To make an impact in primetime, where one in five viewers now watches multichannel TV, terrestrial TV has had to fight harder than ever for its audience. According to Ofcom, almost 70% of UK households have multichannel." In the Drama category, Doctor Who still tops the table for the year with the 10.81m (44.84%) audience for 'Rose' on 26 March, and Broadcast argues that this success "opened the door for more drama in primetime Saturday night". In fact, these end-of-year charts confirm that Doctor Who remained in its prime spot throughout the year, the programmes and figures at the top of the charts remaining essentially unchanged since March. The magazine has also compiled a chart of the Top 100 shows of 2005, the first ten of which (and two other items of interest) are:

1. Coronation Street / 14.35m / 57.39% / ITV1 (19.30, Monday 21 February)
2. EastEnders / 14.34m / 57.85% / BBC1 (20.00, Friday 18 February)
3. The Vicar of Dibley / 11.57m / 42.70% / BBC1 (21.00, Saturday 1 January)
4. Emmerdale / 11.18m / 48.80% / ITV1 (19.00, Monday 21 February)
5. Comic Relief: Red Nose Night Live / 10.93m / 45.09% / BBC1 (19.00, Friday 11 March)
6. Doctor Who / 10.81m / 44.84% / BBC1 (19.00 Saturday 26 March)
7. I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here! / 10.54m / 44.02% / ITV1 (21.00, Monday 28 November)
8. Strictly Come Dancing / 10.4m / 41.50% / BBC1 (18.30, Saturday 17 December)
9. A Touch of Frost / 10.28m / 40.24% / ITV1 (20.25, Sunday 25 September)
10. Little Britain / 10.17m / 40.68% / BBC1 (21.00, Thursday 17 November)
...
19. Casualty / 9.24m / 36.43% / BBC1 (20.10, Saturday 1 January)
29. Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway / 8.84m / 40.3% / ITV1 (19.00, Saturday 12 March)

Not bad for a television series that the BBC retired in 1989 and took 15 years to bring back to weekly television (in a time slot dominated by the #29 entry on the list.) Full details are available (to registered members) at theBroadcastNowwebsite. (Thanks to Steve Tribe)

Doctor Who Magazine 364

Monday, 5 December 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

Issue #364 of Doctor Who Magazine is due out this week, on Thursday 8 December. The press blurb and cover illustration is below; click on the thumbnail for a larger version. (With thanks to Tom Spilsbury at DWM)
Put on a party hat, pull a cracker, and countdown the hours to The Christmas Invasion with the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine!

This issue, the magazine speaks exclusively to Billie Piper - the Doctor's companion, Rose - in a massive '0-page interview. Billie chats about how Rose will cope with the new Doctor in the Christmas Special and Series Two...

"Rose is a bit more possessive this time around. I think it's because she feels like she's lost the Doctor once, and she doesn't want to lose him again. She's become a bit more jealous, which is something that's quite funny, but also destructive, as we'll find out...

"Sometimes Christmas specials don't really include Christmas. But ours does. There's lots of Christmas... and I'm such a Christmas freak! So yeah, Christmas and a new Doctor, and an alien invasion. And isn't that everything that you could possibly want from a Christmas special? Oh, and crackers!"

Plus, of course, there's a full preview to the Tenth Doctor's festive debut, with dozens of photos from the story.

Meanwhile Steven Moffat, writer of the poll-winning The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances looks back at the success of his first Doctor Who adventure and chats about writing for the new Doctor in The Girl in the Fireplace.

Plus: there's a look back at 2005 in the Review of the Year; Sorvad takes a journey with the Ghost of Christmas Past; and a very special story, Voice from the Vortex, which has dropped through from a terrifying parallel dimension.

Meanwhile, the Watcher returns with his Christmas Quiz; the Time Team watch The Armageddon Factor; the Ninth Doctor reaches his final comic strip adventure, A Groatsworth of Wit; and Russell T Davies returns with his own special version of The Twelve Days of Christmas in Production Notes...

Radio Times will feature the year's third Doctor Who cover this year with the issue that goes on sale on 3 December. This follows the earlier covers this year, both at the start of the series as well as the Dalek cover that was released with the airing of the episode "Dalek". Click on the thumbnail for a larger version. Meanwhile, the press release for the Radio Times cover is below. (Thanks to the BBC Press Office; special thanks to Martin Hoscik at UNIT News who helped out when the release went missing!)
Radio Times is running its boldest ever Christmas promotion this year with a free audio CD-ROM in each issue, a once in a lifetime opportunity to win a TV star, and a cross media nationwide above the line campaign.

The free Chronicles of Narnia CD, which is produced in association with AOL, Buena Vista International and BBC Audiobooks, includes the first part of the Prince Caspian audiobook and behind the scenes footage from the new film, plus a preview demo of the new Narnia game that can be played online by AOL members. Parts two and three of the book will be available with issues of Radio Times on sale on 23 December and 3 January. And as part of the AOL partnership, RT readers can take advantage of a special free one-month AOL Broadband trial.

The free CD is being supported by a nationwide TV campaign, which launches on 6 December - the same day as the worldwide premiere of The Chronicles of Narnia -The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Readers will also have the opportunity to win a real six foot Dalek from the 2005 series as part of a Doctor Who special feature which ties in with the Christmas Day programme.

In addition, there will be a nationwide branding campaign, where prominently positioned six-sheet posters will be displayed outside selected supermarkets in the run up to the big "Christmas shop".

Radio Times publisher Kathy Day said: "I am incredibly proud of Radio Times' biggest ever Christmas issue promotion and have every confidence the UK public will continue to buy the indispensable guide to Christmas TV, radio and film in their millions.

Friday Press Items

Friday, 18 November 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

More about "The Christmas Invasion" has been revealed in the latest issue of SFX Magazine by Russell T Davies. "I love the title," he tells the magazine. "What else could you call it? It will be a great, adventure that's really big in scale. It will be Christmassy – there's nothing I like more than a Christmas special set at Christmas! There's a big story in it for Rose as well as a massive threat to the Earth going on beneath the surface, so Christmas as usual!" Says the article, "With the Doctor still suffering the after-effects of his regeneration, the TARDIS returns to Earth, arriving back at Rose’s council estate. The festive period is just beginning, but the Doctor, recuperating in his pyjamas, is too ill to enjoy it, while his companion attempts to come to terms with the fact that her best friend has changed his identity. But as Rose shares some quality time with her family and friends (Camille Coduri is back as Jackie Tyler, along with Noel Clarke as Mickey), an alien force is stirring. The Sycorax invasion is beginning... So what else can we expect from the story? 'I can tell you that the words 'Arthur Dent' are said in the Christmas special,' reveals Davies, rather teasingly. 'It's got scary Christmas trees, Santa attacks, there's an invasion, and the Doctor stays in bed for a long, long time,' Billie Piper recently told the press. 'I am carrying most of the show.'"

The Mirror says that Billie Piper is "at the centre of a tug-of-love between the BBC and ITV... Since quitting the hit sci-fi show - as revealed by The Mirror last week - 23-year-old Billie has already been snapped up for two major new projects, one with each of the main channels. For ITV1, she will don a ribboned bonnet to play priggish Fanny Price in a new adaptation of Jane Austen's most controversial novel, Mansfield Park. ... Meanwhile, BBC bosses have got a secret project waiting in the wings for her. Our insider tells us: 'This is very, very different to Doctor Who. Billie has proven herself at the BBC, first with The Canterbury Tales, then as Rose in Doctor Who, and recently in Much Ado About Nothing. The camera loves her. She has the sort of face which comes across really well on screen. Any critic who claims she is only good at playing ditzy characters is wrong - there were some very dark scenes in Doctor Who which she handled really well. All her performances have been brilliant. We can't wait to work with her again.'" Of course, this is forgetting the fact that she's still working on the show... take this for what it's worth.

More reports of the lighting of Cardiff at icWalesHam High News; the lighting also gets coverage on CBBC Newsround and the official site has a brief report and a link to a new, permanent clip from Wales Today on the Media Player (the Wales Today programme itself being only briefly available online).

Is Ross Kemp (who plays Grant Mitchell in "EastEnders") soon to be a guest star in the new series? The showbiz correspondent on HeartFM Radio seems to think so, noting in an 'exclusive' that he might be in the series, but we haven't heard anything about it elsewhere.

The official Doctor Who website has been updated with a Christmas theme today.

In The News has picked up the David Beckham story from yesterday; other print-only media to pick it up includes the Press Association and Newsquest Media Group (so expect it in a variety of papers by next week!) Also, Playbillmentions a December 19 holiday concert in which John Barrowman is slated to appear.

New Series Update and Red Button Episode

Thursday, 10 November 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine (#363) reveals another stunning development for the series: immediately after broadcast of 'The Christmas Invasion', digital viewers (digital, cable or Freeview) "will be invited to 'press their red buttons' to join the Doctor on a new adventure," meaning an additional special episode for the time period between the airing of the Christmas special and the start of series two. Written by Gareth Roberts and starring David Tennant (who has already filmed scenes for it), the digital feature is directed by Ashley Way and produced by Sophie Fante "in conjunction with the Doctor Who production team". According to executive producer Julie Gardner, "This is being treated as a full-blooded, sophisticated production, with [...] a brand new alien villain [...] and brand new sets [...] Viewers will even be able to use their remotes to fly the TARDIS!"
Meanwhile, the episode also discusses the new Children in Need special, which is written by Russell T Davies and directed by Euros Lynn: "it's a proper piece of Doctor Who - meaning it's not a spoof, or an interview, or a preview of the Christmas episode, or a [...] look behind the scenes; it's genuine new Doctor Who! [...] we've been planning this for months."
DWM confirms that Block Three of production, directed by Graeme Harper, is under way. Episode 5 is not called 'Parallel Worlds' (the real title is not revealed). Episode 4 ("The Girl in the Fireplace") will feature Angel Coulby as Katherine.
Finally, the new series has debuted in France on the new digital channel France 4. Says the official Doctor Who website, "To celebrate the Time Lord's arrival in France, Executive Producers Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner launched the show in Paris, and have been speaking to everyone from cutting edge trendsetters, Inrockuptibles and Technikart, through to all the national listings weeklies and even French National Radio. Hopes are high for Doctor Who - the French have a tradition for taking such shows to their hearts (they had four Buffy magazines), and it's part of a high-profile launch line up for their trendiest new digital channel." The site also confirms that the series will arrive in Italy later this month.
