First Day Cardiff Report

Monday, 19 July 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
Outpost Gallifrey correspondent Dave Shuttleworth was in the Cardiff area on Sunday and reported in our forum about some of the goings-on in town. We have marked these as spoilers though there is very little specific information. Several batches of photos of the area, including some of the film crew vans and a few facades, are being discussed in our forum in the new series sections and Outpost Gallifrey hopes to post them for our readers later today. (Thanks to Dave Shuttleworth)
After looking at the streets listed as this week's locations on the news page, I popped in to the Cardiff Visitor Centre, in Working Street. I figured there was no harm in asking whether or not they could confirm that Doctor Who was going to be filmed outside their premises and, sure enough, not only are the crew using the street, they're using the visitor centre itself as a location, together with the pub next door (Toad @ the Exhibition).

The two premises are part of the same building - the old city library - and are being used as a police station. I went into the Toad for lunch (not bad and reasonably priced!) and got chatting to the girls behind the bar. They're getting ready to let the Doctor Who crew use half the pub on Tuesday night from 7pm (the rest will be open to the public) and are quite excited about the prospect.

From there I walked out to the old Cardiff Royal Infirmary, which is a wonderfully ramshackle example of gothic decay - a great location! In the area at the front of the building was a group of about eight or ten extras, dressed as soldiers - camouflage gear, red berets and heavy rifles - together with one man dressed in a smart military uniform, with a cap (from the military police vehicle I spotted later, I would guess they might be 'Redcaps' but I didn't recognise the insignia on the berets, which was sort-of T-shaped metal badge - perhaps a figure with arms outstretched?)

There were various film crew types wandering about and an awful lot of lighting/equipment vans and other lorries. Circling the site, there were lots of temporary 'BBC Wales' signs and I asked one of the chaps what was going on (I'm sure my pretence of 'not being all that interested' didn't fool him for a moment!) and he said: "It's the first day of filming on the new series of Doctor Who."

Back round at the front of the building, some set dressing was going on at the hospital gates - a big 'metal' arch, painted black, with 'ALBION HOSPITAL' in gold letters, which were being dirtied down. From the safety of the other side of the road I watched for a while (I was desperate not to run the slightest risk of getting in the way or annoying anyone and it's a very public place, so what the hey?) then went off to the cinema for a couple of hours.

When the film was over I couldn't resist popping back for another look! By this time (around 4pm) there were a handful of police vehicles (basic markings - stripes and lettering, blank insignia - so not a specific force, apart from one that had 'MILITARY POLICE' on its bonnet. Maybe extra decals will be added later?) and the armoured car. Round the back of the infirmary were four extras, dressed as police wearing tactical gear (black combat stuff).

Doctor Who's Traffic Chaos

Saturday, 17 July 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
NewsWales ran an article yesterday called "Dr Who causes traffic chaos" about the new series starting production. "Cardiff commuters will have to make way for Dr Who next week as the BBC uses the cityÆs streets for the filming of the new series. Working Street and St John Street will be closed from 6pm on Tuesday July 20 until 5am on Wednesday July 21 to make way for BBC crews and filming û but allowances will be made for pedestrians coming from the St DavidÆs Hall concerts. St Mary Street, High Street and Guildhall Place will also be closed from 11pm on Wednesday July 21 until 5am on Thursday July 22. BBC Wales is producing the television comeback of Dr Who. The new series, written by Swansea-born dramatist Russell T. Davies, will star Christopher Eccleston as Dr Who and Billie Piper as his companion. The 13-episode series is to be shown on the BBC early next year." (Thanks to Paul Hayes)

Also... the Western Mail newspaper is running a similar article that has roughly the same information, stating " A different time zone wil descend on streets in Cardiff as film crews close roads for the filming of the new Doctor Who series." A number of retailers in the area have been advised that filming will commence this coming week, most of which will take place in the early evenings. (Thanks to Colin John Francis, Gil Williams)

Piper Speaks to ITV

Friday, 16 July 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
Billie Piper appeared on ITV-1's mid-morning show "This Morning" today with a pre-recorded behind-the-scenes feature on her recent filming of the horror movie "Spirit Trap" in Romania. Their reporter Nikki Chapman interviewed her and they showed a few clips from the film. Billie mostly talked about her character, Jenny, and talked about all the action scenes she's had: "it's the most physical role I've ever had to do," she told Chapman. She also spoke briefly about her forthcoming role as Rose in "Doctor Who," in a section of the interview introduced by the Peter Howell version of the theme tune. Piper said she was "so excited" to do the series, and described it as "a huge thing". Eccleston is "one of my favourite actors," she said to Chapman, and she is "so nervous" about doing the show. Lost In Time Update

Thursday, 15 July 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
On the Restoration Team Forum today, details for the "Lost In Time" DVD set have been released (BBC Worldwide apparently confirming it and allowing the topic to be discussed there.) The full feature list is as follows, confirming some of the details but discounting others (notably, despite reports on OG and elsewhere, telesnap photo sessions and the "Making of Fury From the Deep" documentary are not included.) According to Steve Roberts of the RT, "With the exception of 'The Lion' [episode 1 of 'The Crusade'], which is the original 1999 transfer, albeit with some additional cleanup, all the remaining episodes are new Spirit transfers from the best surviving materials, cleaned up and VidFIREd to our usual standard" while, according to Mark Ayres, "All episodes have been newly-remastered - pictures and sound. (With the honourable exception of some we'd done relatively recently - Web 1, and the Faceless eps)." As for the updated "Missing Years" documentary, says Paul Vanezis, "The Missing Years is being kept intact as was, not changes have been made to the body of the programme. The additional material consists of a short feature in the style of 'Since this programme was made...'." It also appears that it may be released simultaneously in the UK and North America. BBC Books: Ninth Doctor Novels clarification

Wednesday, 14 July 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
To expand upon the announcement last week about the forthcoming young adult Doctor Who novels based on the new television series, Justin Richards of BBC Books has contacted us with a statement that should clear up some confusion. "The 'blurbs' are taken from the BBCW internal project management system and intended to describe each of the projects. They aren't real back cover blurbs or marketing copy, they're just placeholder text. Similarly, the titles are working titles only. The schedule is provisional - and actually has been typed in wrong anyway! The order of the novels' release has already changed, for example. And the storylines have not yet been agreed in detail, so everything in these could turn out to be wrong. For the record, the audience we are aiming for is 'family' - exactly the same as the TV show. It would be rather silly to aim the books at a different audience, after all. That basically means the books will be every bit as sophisticated as the current range of novesl, but written with an awareness that children from about age 12 (rather than about 15 as now) will likely read them - so no graphic sex scenes or over the top violence or sadism etc." (Thanks to Justin Richards)

DWM 346

Wednesday, 14 July 2004 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
Issue #346 of Doctor Who Magazine will be released on July 22. "Hot from the offices of BBC Wales," says the press release, "DWM meets the folks in charge of Visual Effects, Special Make-Up and Prosthetics, and Models and Miniatures for the new series! Plus there's an exclusive chat with new Doctor Who director Keith Boak, while the show's executive producer Russell T Davies spoils fans rotten with a double-length Production Notes column. He may even tackle the thorny issue of what every episode of the new series is called. Which would be nice. Then people would stop emailing us. There's also an interview with Doctor Who's elusive former script editor, Eric (continuity) Saward, and a purring chat with Oxo-mum and Gallifrey's guardian, Lynda Bellingham. You can also see the rediscovered telesnaps of part six of Marco Polo, discover how Winston Churchill is involved in the length of Doctor Who seasons, and gasp with double Dalek delight as Nicholas Briggs reveals all about the Dalek Empire and The Time Team watch Genesis of the Daleks. Space Applause! Meanwhile, in the comic strip, The Doctor and Destrii arrive in Camden in the first part of epic new serial The Flood. Editor Clayton Hickman promises it's 'sooooooooo brilliant!'" The cover is at right.
