Outpost Gallifrey has learned that filming of the first series of Torchwood, the Doctor Who spinoff series starring John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, has been delayed until the summer, likely June or July. The series was originally scheduled to go into production this month, but has been delayed several times. We're also told that James Hawes, scheduled to be a producer on the new series, has had to bow out due to the change of schedule. More details as we get them.

Minchin to Torchwood?

Sunday, 4 December 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

According to the Internet Movie Database, Brian Minchin will be the story editor for "Torchwood". Minchin's other work includes script editing the seventh season of "Belonging," the BBC Wales serial that features Eve Myles ("The Unquiet Dead"), and producing a short entitled "The Boy with Blue Eyes" which stars Shaun Dingwall ("Father's Day"). Stevens to Torchwood?

Tuesday, 22 November 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

Is Rachel Stevens headed for "Torchwood"? The rumors have been flying and now there are reports that "the singer has a final audition to win the part of Gwen opposite John Barrowman's Captain Jack in the post-watershed sci-fi show. Rachel, 27, hopes to follow in Billie Piper's footsteps by transforming from pop star to actress. She was beaten to the part of the Doctor's sidekick Rose Tyler by Billie when the hit revival was cast.... Rachel said of her failure to land the role of Rose: 'Things happen for a reason and Billie is really great. If the right thing came around, I'd love to do something.' The former S Club singer said: 'I've been called back for a meeting about a permanent role. I so hope I get it as I'm sick of being attacked for my music.'" Torchwood in SFX

Thursday, 17 November 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

Russell T Davies updates readers on Torchwood in the new issue of SFX Magazine, as relayed by the website The Great Link. The interview notes that the show, about a "renegade bunch of investigators," will first be hinted at in "The Christmas Invasion" next month. More hints will follow throughout the second season. Davies will write two episodes of "Torchwood" which he says that, thanks to the expected watershed slot (9pm) for the show, "we can be a bit more visceral, more violent, and more sexual, if we want to. Though bear in mind that it’s very teenage to indulge yourself in blood and gore, and Torchwood is going to be smarter than that. But it’s the essential difference between BBC One at 7pm, and BBC Three at say, 9pm. That says it all -- instinctively, every viewer can see the huge difference there." Torchwood is still in the early stages of development, it says, but there will probably some production crossover with Doctor Who, "they’re two very different shows, so each will have its own identity." As Outpost Gallifrey previously reported, writers currently onboard for Torchwood are PJ Hammond (ITV’s Sapphire and Steel) and Chris Chibnall (BBC One’s Born and Bred). You can read more from Russell about Torchwood in the Christmas 2005 Issue of SFX Magazine. (Thanks to Chris Howell at The Great Link)

Torchwood Update

Thursday, 10 November 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

In the new Doctor Who Magazine, executive producer Russell T Davies has commented on the new spin-off series "Torchwood". Davies says that the show and Doctor Who will "share some of the production base". Ed Thomas will now be Series Designer on both shows. DWM also confirms with the production that Charlotte Church has not been approached to appear in the series, contrary to the recent reports in the British tabloids.
Davies also says that "anyone worrying that a new show will drain the resources of Doctor Who is just... well, a worrier. We've planned this in great detail. And all of the planning has taken account of the fact that Doctor Who is the BBC's flagship show [...] and must be protected and supported at all times. The shows have separate budgets, and both will be fully staffed from the best we can find." As is Davies' tradition, he also appears to casually drop in a character name: "the Doctor will be striding into 2006 with some truly astonishing adventures, with Jack and Gwen and the team following right behind!"

Torchwood Press Items

Tuesday, 25 October 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
More on the possibility of singer Charlotte Church being in the new "Torchwood" series: late last week, the Mirrornoted that she "has been brought in to play a raunchy, Satan-worshipping teenager" and that a show insider had told them, "Charlotte is a big Dr Who fan and she was thrilled when we approached her. The role is ideally suited to her - she is beautiful but can be very vampish when she wants." There is, however, nothing definite and this could merely be publicity for the singer/actress. Additional locations reporting on the story since last update include Dark Horizons,Daily Record,Contact MusicMonsters and CriticsFemale First.

John Barrowman appeared last week on "Loose Women," the TV chat show. In his second appearance on the series within a month, Barrowman spoke about "Torchwood," including noting that the show might have a BBC1 repeat showing following the original BBC3 transmission, and that he was very excited to start working on it, but no further details were mentioned.

Church to Torchwood?

Wednesday, 19 October 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
Today's Daily Sar says that singer Charlotte Church "will become Face of a Devil in the new 'adults-only' Dr Who spin-off. BBC bosses want the 19-year-old beauty to play a raunchy, Satan-worshipping villain in 13-part series Torchwood. The Beeb's new 'fun and sexy' sci-fi drama is being shot in her native Cardiff and stars one of her favourite TV hunks, John Barrowman, 38. ... A source on the show, which airs next summer, said: 'Charlotte's a big fan of the show, so she was thrilled when we approached her with the part. As Torchwood is designed for adults, we can be a lot more risque with content.'" Of course, this 'exclusive' report may or may not have any truth in it.

More on Torchwood

Tuesday, 18 October 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
According to an appearance today by John Barrowman on the chat show "Loose Women" on ITV, a couple of interesting items were revealed about Torchwood... including the fact that it might be repeated on BBC One after its BBC Three run, and that "nobody will know how Jack gets back from the future" to present-day Cardiff (building on the fact that he's stranded at the end of the first Doctor Who series). Today's Daily Star ran a picture of a Dalek, with the caption: "Steamy: Even Daleks might hit trouble with the new hero" (though who knows if they'd ever appear in the show!)

Welcome to... Torchwood!

Monday, 17 October 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
In a stunning announcement on Monday (including a BBCpress release), BBC Television announced a new television series spun off from "Doctor Who" to be aired next year on BBC Three.Torchwood, a thirteen-part drama/sci-fi hybrid, will be executive produced by Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner -- the executive producers of Doctor Who currently -- and will star John Barrowman, who reprises his role as Captain Jack Harkness from the first Doctor Who series earlier this year. Said to have an "organic link" to Doctor Who, Davies says that "Torchwood is a British sci-fi paranoid thriller, a cop show with a sense of humour. It's dark, wild and sexy, it's the X Files meets This Life. It's a stand-alone series for adult audiences which will have its own unique identity. I have just begun working on the scripts with a team of writers and cannot wait to see the results."
The series will be set in modern-day Cardiff and will segue from events seen in the Doctor Who Christmas special and second series next year; the upcoming Doctor Who episodes will feature stories involving Torchwood, "a renegade group of investigators" (and also an anagram of "Doctor Who," but that isn't a plot point) and though the new show will use these concepts, it will be independent and no stories will cross over between the two series. Says Stuart Murphy, Controller of BBC Three, "The renegades investigate human and alien crime, as well as alien technology that has fallen to Earth. Torchwood is sinister and psychological û Russell was really keen to play with your head û as well as being very British and modern and real. But at the centre of the drama are warm, human relationships and the overcoming of adversity. ... Torchwood is a massive coup for BBC Three, and a major commitment û it's the biggest drama we've ever had on the channel. It introduces a different tone into our drama, just as Russell's Casanova earlier this year brought warmth and humour. He's an absolute genius û you look at what he has done with Doctor Who - we said to him, 'What would you do with a post-watershed sci-fi?' Its subject and tone is a perfect fit for BBC Three." Says Barrowman of returning to the role, "I'm absolutely thrilled about Torchwood. It's going to be a dark, wild and sexy roller-coaster ride. Working again with Russell T Davies, Julie Gardner and the BBC is like hooking up with family again. I can't wait to explore Captain Jack even more."
"Torchwood" will be aimed at adults; says Davies, "Doctor Who has a completely different feel to this kind of thing. This is set in the same place every week. It's a different sort of fun to Doctor Who ... "It's an urban series, very much set on earth. It's a Welsh series that I'm very, very proud of." He said Cardiff would be used more often as a location than in Doctor Who, and that he hoped the series would provide work for Welsh actors and directors. "With Doctor Who we often had to pretend that bits of Cardiff were London, or Utah, or the planet Zog. Whereas this series is going to be 'honest-to-god Cardiff'. We will happily walk past the Millennium Centre and say "Look, there's the Millennium Centre. It's nice to be able to say this is the city, and this is how good it looks." Davies noted that the name Torchwood was used as a security measure during the production of Doctor Who to disguise preview tapes of the first episodes: "When we were making the first Doctor Who series, television pirates were desperate to get their hands on a tape. One of the people in the office had the idea of calling the tapes of episodes, as they went from Cardiff to London, Torchwood, instead of putting Doctor Who on it. I thought: 'That's clever!' I've had that taped away at the back of my head for a good six months, and now here it is as a show.'" Davies also spoke today about Torchwood to BBC Wales (audio link: here).
PJ Hammond (creator of Sapphire and Steel) and Chris Chibnall(Born and Bred, Life on Mars) are both confirmed as writers for the series. There are rumors that director James Hawes may be involved, but nothing definite yet. Filming begins in January on the thirteen 45-minute episodes, with transmission expected for the autumn on BBC Three.

Brief News Notes

Thursday, 11 August 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

The BBC has registered torchwood.org.uk, leading to speculation that the term Torchwood -- metnioned in "Bad Wolf" during the "Weakest Link" game segments -- will feature in the next season of the series.

Transmission of the new series has now concluded in South Korea. There is currently no word on any repeat broadcasts.

Regarding this week's story about the Radio Times advert, our correspondents have let us know that you can download the ad, containing Doctor Who references, from the Radio Times website.

A "Doctor Who" reference appeared in the syndicated comic strip "Sheldon" this week, seen at the website of the strip's syndicators,United Media.

Doctor Who was mentioned on the US chat show "Conan O'Brien" on Wednesday, as the show did a piece on a recent Stargate SG-1 convention -- but a Doctor Who fan made an appearance dressed in a Tom Baker outfit, explaining the regeneration process.

The Toys R Us chain of stores has confirmed that they will be introducing the Doctor Who range of toys in early September, including the radio controlled Daleks, sonic screwdrivers, TARDIS money banks and walkie-talkies.
