The Rings of Akhaten had an overnight audience of 5.5 million viewers, a share of 28.8% of the total TV audience.

Doctor Who was once more third for the day, although the gap between the series and the programmes at the top of the chart was slightly larger, perhaps reflecting the lighter evenings.

Top of the list was Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway with 7.3 million watching, while The Voice was second with 6.4 million viewers.

Doctor Who once more won the time-slot with You've Been Framed Rides Again! getting 3.4 million watching.

Final ratings will be released next week, which should see Doctor Who substantially increase its rating once those who timeshift the programme are factored in.

The Bells of Saint John had an Appreciation Index, or AI score, of 87.

The Appreciation Index or AI is a measure of how much the audience enjoyed the programme. The score, out of a hundred, is compiled by a specially selected panel of around 5,000 people who go online and rate and comment on programmes.

Doctor Who scored higher than most of Saturday's output. Other high scoring programmes were Casulty with 87, Richard Briers: A Tribute with 88 and Easter From Kings with 89.

The Bells of Saint John has debuted in Australia, averaging 757,000 viewers in the five major capital cities. It was the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's top-rating program of the day and the eighth highest rating programme of the day overall. It was also the fifth highest rating program in the free-to-air 18-49 and 25-54 demographics. These ratings do not include regional or time-shifted viewers.

The Bells of Saint John had an overnight audience of 6.18 million viewers, a share of 29.8% of the total TV audience.

Doctor Who was the third most-watched programme of the day, which saw old rivals Ant and Dec take the top slot with their Saturday Night Takeaway, getting 7.19 million watching. The Voice UK, which was up against Ant and Dec, came second with fractionally more viewers than Doctor Who with 6.24 million.

Doctor Who won the time slot with You've Been Framed! on ITV getting 3.6 million watching.

Overall Doctor Who currently stands at the 22nd most watched programme of the week. Final ratings will be released next week, which, if recent trends are followed, should see Doctor Who substantially increase its rating once those who timeshift the programme are factored in.

The Snowmen has given BBC America record ratings, with the Christmas Day special being watched by 1.434 million people either live or within seven days.

This was a rise of 54 per cent on the BBC America ratings for last year's Christmas episode, making it the channel's second most-popular programme, beaten only by Asylum of the Daleks, which garnered 1.555 million viewers in September.

Perry Simon, BBC America's general manager, said:According to TV By The Numbers, it was the 70th most-watched programme on cable on the day and 17th in its transmission slot.

Doctor Who has also been voted TV Guide cover of 2012, having made the front last month as last year's Fan Favorite.

Doctor Who: The Snowmen had a final official audience of 9.87 million viewers, according to figures released by the BBC.

The consolidated figure includes those who recorded the programme and watched it within seven days, and is a substantial increase on the initial overnight figure. It makes Doctor Who the fourth most-watched programme of Christmas Day, edging ahead of the Christmas Strictly Come Dancing, which beat Doctor Who in the overnights but lost out in the final figures.

Top of the list was EastEnders, with 11.3 million watching, followed by Call the Midwife, which overtook Doctor Who in the final figures, and The Royle Family.

Coronation Street was the highest-rated programme on ITV1, just failing to reach the heights of The Snowmen and coming fifth in the Top Ten list. Figures do not include the +1 channels, which will bring Coronation Street back above Doctor Who in the weekly BARB figures. Doctor Who also achieved a greater number of viewers than Downton Abbey, ITV1's flagship drama.

The viewing figures are lower than in recent years, where Doctor Who was transmitted in a later timeslot, but higher than the 2005 and 2006 Christmas specials.



Overall in 2012 Doctor Who had an average rating of 8.28 million viewers, higher than last year's figure of 7.75 million.

The BBC also reports that, so far, over 1.46 million have accessed the episode on BBC iPlayer.

This year's score is higher than the majority of the previous Christmas Day specials, with last year's The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe scoring 84. Only the first part of the Tenth Doctor's swansong, The End of Time - Part One, equalled the score of 87.

An additional 0.56 million have now watched The Snowmen, via the Boxing Day repeat on BBC Three, where it achieved a 2.3% share of the total TV audience.

It came second in its time-slot, was the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's top-rating drama of the day and the twelfth highest rating programme of the day overall.  These ratings do not include regional or time-shifted viewers.

The Snowmen had an overnight audience of 7.59 million viewers, a share of 33.9% of the total TV audience.

Doctor Who was the fifth most-watched programme of the day, which saw BBC One take seven of the top ten places in the ratings chart. The most watched programme of the day was EastEnders which had 9.4 million watching.

ITV1's highest rated show of the day was Coronation Street with 8.6 million viewers.

Doctor Who was down on last year's overnight figure, which saw the show transmitted in a much later time slot, where it had 8.9 million watching. This year, against the Doctor, Emmerdale achieved 4.7 million viewers.

Despite its early start, Doctor Who out-rated some prime time shows including the Christmas episode of Downton Abbey and Call The Midwife.

Final figures, which will include those who record the programme and watch it later, will be available next week.

The Great Detective, the prequel to the Doctor Who Christmas Episode, shown as part of the BBC's Children in Need programme, was watched by 6.3 million viewers, according to unofficial overnight viewing figures.

The trail for the upcoming episode, The Snowmen, which aired an hour later, was watched by 8.6 million viewers, out-rating Coronation Street on ITV1.
