Seventh Doctor book to raise money for charityBookmark and Share

Sunday, 6 April 2014 - Reported by John Bowman
A book that takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the era of the Seventh Doctor is to be brought out in July 2014 by Miwk Publishing, with the authors' profits going to the Alzheimer's Society.

Wallowing In Our Own Weltschmerz is being written by Andy Davidson, Chris Orton, Andrew Orton, Steven Duckworth, Robert Hammond and Matthew West – a fanzine collection of writers known as "Auton" – with the cover designed by Andrew Orton.

Doctor Who is now in its 51st year and enjoying its 12th/13th/14th/latest of many actors to take on the lead role. Every era is different, each actor brings their own style to the role, each producer and script editor makes their mark and probably Sylvester McCoy's era is one of the most divisive among fandom. It's a dynamic three years blowing cobwebs off the memory of recent cancellation. The Doctor and the series develop over 47 episodes until finally, sadly, just as things are on the up, the show is cancelled again. The Auton guide to the stories behind the Seventh Doctor's era answers all the questions fans haven't been asking:
  • Cleaning Robots: What can you actually clean with a drill and a saw blade? We tried.
  • Who built the Rani's lair? How long did it take?
  • Harry's 70+ – How old is his wife if she's having twins in a few weeks?
  • Why is the Psychic Circus so-called?
  • Why do Rezzies eat Kangs when they've got a ready supply of teacakes, crumpets, muffin, basil and fresh cream?
  • Now that we have a "Special Weapons" Dalek, should we relabel all the other Daleks?
  • And how did Delta fit into Mel's dress?
We worry about these things so you don't have to. It's been a long time since Auton visited Doctor Who. Aided by the illustrations of Andy X Cable, it's time to get it out of our system.

Build high for happiness.
"Auton" dates back to 1989 and since then has produced "nineteen and a half" fanzines and two books.

(Editor's note: "Weltschmerz" is German for "world-weariness".)

Matt Smith to play for England in Soccer Aid 2014Bookmark and Share

Monday, 17 March 2014 - Reported by John Bowman
Matt Smith will be playing football for England when he takes part in this year's Soccer Aid.

And he'll be facing a former nemesis in the shape of Michael Sheen - who provided the voice of the sinister House in The Doctor's Wife - at the charity event at Old Trafford on Sunday 8th June. Doors open at 5pm and kick-off is at 8pm, with the match being broadcast live on ITV.

It is being held in aid of the global children's charity UNICEF, with Smith signed up for Robbie Williams's England team. Meanwhile, Sheen is heading the opposing Rest of the World side. Joining Smith on the England squad will be Bradley Walsh, who appeared in The Sarah Jane Adventures story The Day of the Clown.

Before he became an actor, Smith's dream was to be a professional footballer, and he played for the youth teams at Northampton Town, Nottingham Forest, and Leicester City, but the spinal condition spondylosis wrecked his sporting hopes. However, he retains links to the game through his avid support for Blackburn Rovers, and the 2010 episode The Lodger saw the actor don a number 11 football shirt as the Doctor and lead fictional pub team The King's Arms to victory.

Williams, who is UNICEF's UK ambassador, said:
Soccer Aid returns for the fifth time in June and I admit there are scores to settle.

Leading the England team, I will be making sure we defend that trophy against Rest of the World. There's never been a better time for us to show our support for UNICEF, so please dig deep and buy your tickets now!
And UNICEF UK executive director David Bull said:
Soccer Aid 2014 will raise vital money to help some of the world's most vulnerable children get life-saving food, medicine and clean water.

Every day, children are in serious danger and thousands die needlessly in the struggle against poverty, hunger and disease. It's time for us all to act. Please, buy a ticket to go to Soccer Aid or watch the match on ITV and help us change children's lives.
In the past six years, Soccer Aid has raised more than £12m to help children around the world.

Tickets for the match cost from £20 for adults and from £5 for under-16s and over-65s, with premium seats at £40 (plus booking fees), and can be bought via the Soccer Aid site.

Sheen features briefly in his kit in the promotional video below, while The Lodger guest star James Corden can also be seen cheering:

Other celebrities on the England team are Stephen Moyer, Jamie Theakston, Mark Owen, Jack Whitehall, Damian Lewis, Paddy McGuinness, John Bishop and Olly Murs, while Sheen's celebrity players will include James McAvoy, Nicky Byrne, Adam Richman, Patrick Kielty and Gordon Ramsay. Former professional footballers joining the England side are Teddy Sheringham, Jamie Redknapp, David Seaman, Paul Ince and Jamie Carragher, with Jaap Stam and Edwin van der Sar among those playing for Rest of the World.

UPDATE - 8th JUNE: Sadly, Matt Smith was unable to take part in the game because of an injury. In a statement, he said:

It is with great disappointment that I will have to withdraw from this year's Soccer Aid as a result of injury. I have always wanted to play at Old Trafford, a personal dream, and was hugely excited to have the opportunity to support UNICEF. I do hope I will be invited to join Soccer Aid and UNICEF in the future and play football for such a good cause.

I really am so sorry to disappoint anyone who may have bought tickets to see me play. I can't express my apologies enough. However, I am certain this year's incredible line-up will still entertain and, most importantly, continue to raise money for children all over the world.

Production Designer's Notebook for AuctionBookmark and Share

Saturday, 31 August 2013 - Reported by Marcus
The personal notebook of Tristan Peatfield is being auctioned for charity.

Tristan Peatfield was the production designer on Doctor Who for two episodes in 2010, Amy's Choice and The Lodger, covering the gap between the departure of Ed Thomas and the arrival of Michael Pickwoad.

The item is a 14cm x 21cm black covered "Guildhall" notebook, which contains notes on a number of productions on which Peatfield worked, including at least 13 pages dedicated to Doctor Who. It includes text, designs and drawings in pencil by Peatfield and his colleague Peter McKinstry, including the original design for the "Lodger TARDIS" console and "Amy Pond, TARDIS Pilot".

The notebook is offered on behalf of Peatfield to raise money for The Isabella Peatfield Memorial Fund, a charity raising money for children's projects in Sri Lanka. Tristan and Kim Peatfield's daughter Isabella died in the country on Boxing Day 2004, the youngest British victim of the Indian Ocean Tsunami.

The ebay listing is now live and the auction runs for the next nine days.

Matt Smith's First Car Up For Charity AuctionBookmark and Share

Thursday, 11 July 2013 - Reported by John Bowman
Matt Smith is selling his first car for charity.

The X-reg Vauxhall Corsa Club is being auctioned off on eBay in aid of Starlight - an organisation that grants wishes to children who are seriously and terminally ill and entertains youngsters in hospitals and hospices in the UK.

Also affectionately known as "The Shed", the silver three-door manual vehicle, which was first registered on 30th November 2000, has approximately 60,000 miles on the clock. It has been owned by Smith since he was 18, but has ended up parked on his parents' driveway because of his work commitments. In addition, the MoT expired last November, but the 12V 973cc petrol-fuelled car is taxed until August.

The eBay listing states:
The car has several significant features that Matt is particularly proud of, including a wing mirror held on with gaffer tape and one or two strategically-placed bumps and scratches which add to the car's authenticity as the Time Lord's favoured mode of transport.

Affectionately called The Shed by many of Matt's friends, the Corsa, which Matt has had since new, has been involved in many of his most memorable journeys to and from university in Norwich and to the National Youth Theatre and even to some of the Dr Who locations. Latterly, Matt asked his sister to drive the Corsa, keeping it in near-perfect working order.

Alas, as the car grows slowly older it is now in need of a more loving home, particularly as Matt's career now takes him away so often to far-flung exotic locations where his trusty Corsa cannot go! So it is with a heavy heart that Matt must bid "The Shed" farewell!
Smith, who is an ambassador for Starlight, commented:
While I have been travelling the universe in my TARDIS, my much-loved Vauxhall Corsa, aka The Shed, has been parked outside my parents' house. As my first-ever car, it has seen lots of adventures, not to mention a fair few mishaps, hence the dents.

I'll be very sad to see it go but I understand my parents want their driveway back! I'd love to find a new owner for this great little car, particularly as all the profits will go to Starlight, which is an amazing charity that brightens the lives of seriously and terminally ill children.
The auction closes on Thursday 18th July at 2.11pm BST. At the time of posting this news item, the top bid was £560.

Smith can be seen discussing the car, among other topics, in the following excerpt from an edition of the BBC TV series Top Gear, which was broadcast on 26th February 2012 and uploaded to the show's YouTube channel at the beginning of this year. (NB: May not play outside the UK.)

UPDATE - THURSDAY 18th JULY, 3.40pm BST: The car eventually went for £6,300 after 64 bids.

Fundraising in memory of Caroline JohnBookmark and Share

Thursday, 25 April 2013 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Ben Beevers, the son of the late Caroline John, is fundraising in his mother's memory:

Caroline John (Credit: Big Finish)Last year, Caroline John - who played Liz Shaw, the Third Doctor's assistant - passed away after a long battle with cancer. During her illness Caroline and her family received amazing support from the Princess Alice Hospice.

On 4th August 2013 her son, Ben Beevers, will be cycling the London-Surrey 100 (a 100-mile cycle ride through London and Surrey!) for Help for Hospices in memory of Caroline.

Ben said:
The Princess Alice Hospice cared brilliantly for my Mum and this care allowed her to spend more time with us as a family and come back home in the final few weeks. We will always be grateful for those last days with Mum and so we are attempting to raise money for the hospices, particularly Princess Alice's. We want to give something back and continue to give others the support they need at the most difficult of times, making the unbearable that little bit easier.

If you can spare anything please visit Caroline John’s Just Giving page, or you can text MUMM71 (followed by the amount you want to donate, e.g. £5) to 70070

(with thanks to Big Finish)
