Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder

A new blockbuster exhibition Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder, will be coming to Liverpool this summer.

The exhibition, at World Museum from 27 May, will include contributions from stars across the fields of science and entertainment, along with the opportunity to find out more about the many links between Liverpool and the long-running sci-fi show

Mark Gatiss – co-creator of BBC’s Sherlock and writer of several episodes of Doctor Who – will narrate the exhibition, guiding visitors through space and time.

So many people who have gone on to work in science have had their interest piqued by watching Doctor Who, and one of the amazing things about the show is its ability to make us wonder. I’m thrilled to be part of the exhibition and I do hope as many curiously minded people as possible take the opportunity to visit.

Space scientist, author and presenter of BBC’s The Sky at Night Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE will provide expert analysis and explore the mind-blowing science behind the TV show, through interactive “Ask a Scientist” sections located throughout the exhibition.

As a child, Science Fiction played a critical role in my life and inspired me to become a Space Scientist - it allows us to explore tales of wonder and shows us the possibilities for the future and how science fiction can become science fact. I hope the Dr Who Exhibition – and my contribution to it – will inspire, inform and excite everyone in the same way.

Zoë Wanamaker CBE will be reprising her Doctor Who role, lending her voice to an exhibit all about her iconic character Lady Cassandra O’Brien - the last ‘pure’ human who became obsessed with a warped idea of perfection through surgery.

Visitors will also be able to delve into the classic set designs of the original series, as well as the incredible special effects and makeup design that bring the show to life – all from scientists, designers and producers who have worked on Doctor Who.

Tardis lands at World Museum (Credit: Gareth Jones)National Museums Liverpool can also reveal the inclusion of a special Liverpool Connections area within the exhibition – delving deeper into the links between the classic TV show and the city of Liverpool.

Not only can visitors discover more about the many Merseyside stars who have featured in Doctor Who - from Sir Ken Dodd OBE to John Bishop – but this area will also explore the surprising tale of when the Beatles almost met the Daleks and the story behind the “Mad Mole” of Edge Hill Joseph Williamson’s inclusion in Season 13 of the TV show.

Fiona Philpott, Director of Exhibitions at National Museums Liverpool, said:

We’re thrilled to announce a small taste of what visitors can expect at the world premiere of Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder, and we can’t think of anywhere more fitting than Liverpool to host it. There is truly something for everyone within the exhibition – from science-fiction fans to families, and from Doctor Who buffs to those who simply have a curious mind. The behind-the-scenes knowledge that the contributors bring to the exhibition is mind-blowing.

Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder will open on 27 May and tickets are available now. Adult tickets are priced at £14 in advance or £16 on the day - concession rates apply. Tickets for members are free. In addition to free entry to the exhibition, members receive limitless free entry to all other exhibitions, discounts in our shops and cafes and invitations to exclusive events.

Legend Of The Sea Devils - Official 7 Day Ratings

Monday, 25 April 2022 - Reported by Marcus
Legend Of The Sea Devils: Ji-Hun (ARTHUR LEE) (Credit: BBC Studios/James Pardon)

Doctor Who - Legend Of The Sea Devils, had an official 7-day rating of 3.47 million viewers.

The figure includes all those who watched the episode within 1 week of transmission. The figure is a substantial increase over the initial overnight figure and was enough to make Doctor Who the highest-rated programme on BBC Television for the day.

Overall Doctor Who was the third most-watched programme on British Television for the day, with ITV's drama The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe taking top place.

Doctor Who was the 24th most-watched programme for the week.

The rise from the overnight figure was enough to prevent The Legend of the Sea Devils becoming the lowest-rated episode in Doctor Who history.  That accolade is still held by episode one of the 1989 story Battlefield with 3.1 million watching.  It does however mean that the Sea Devil episode is the lowest-rated story since the series returned in 2005.

Doctor Who will return for one more story in 2022, a climactic regeneration story shown to mark the BBC's 100th birthday, before a new production team, headed up by Russell T Davies, takes over for series 14.
