The new edition of street magazine The Big Issue - out today - marks the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who with a cover feature.

Editor Paul McNamee said: These include:

• An interview with Matt Smith detailing working on screen with David Tennant
• A piece from Who-obsessive, screenwriter, and man of letters Mark Gatiss
• Pieces from Karen Gillan and Eddie Izzard plus a panel of experts explaining what deeply-held psychological fear each Who monster plays to and why we can't escape them
• A big Doctor Who competition with prizes including a TARDIS teapot

This special edition of the weekly magazine will be available from vendors everywhere across Britain except for a pocket around Manchester and the north-west, which is served by The Big Issue In The North.

The Big Issue is written by professional journalists and helps homeless and vulnerably-housed people by giving them the chance to earn their own money. Vendors buy the magazine at a reduced rate and sell it for the cover price, keeping the difference. Please note that the magazine should only be bought from badged vendors.

BBC Three continuted its countdown of Doctor Who: Greatest Monsters & Villains on Saturday evening.

The format features a three minute potted history of the featured villain, followed by the screening of an appropriate episode of Doctor Who. Coming in at number 6 were the Ice Warriors and a screening on a story from the most recent series of Doctor Who Cold War. The episode had an overnight viewing figure of 0.33 million viewers, a 1.4% share of the total audience.

At five were the Cybermen, the episode shown the 2008 Christmas story The Next Doctor. It was watched by 0.58 million a 2.5% share.

Finally for the evening, at number 4 were The Silence. The Impossible Astronaut / Day of the Moon was screened and was watched by an average 0.69 million viewers, a 4.3% share. BBC Three was the second highest watched digital channel for most of the evening, with Die Hard 4.0 on E4 taking the top spot.

BBC Three launched its Doctor Who: Greatest Monsters & Villains Weekend on Friday evening, a ten part series looking back at some of the greatest monsters of the series, hosted by stand up comic & impractical joker, Joel Dommett.

The format features a three minute potted history of the featured villain, followed by the screening of an appropriate episode of Doctor Who. Episode 1 featured the Judoon and was followed by a screening of Smith and Jones. It achieved an overnight viewing figure of 0.37 million viewers, a 1.7% share of the total TV audience. Episode 2 was dedicated to The Silurians and featured A Good Man Goes To War. It achieved an overnight viewing figure of 0.42 million viewers, a 1.7% share of the total TV audience.

At number 8, episode 3 revolved around the the Ood and was followed by the 2008 story Planet of the Ood. It had 0.40 million viewers with 1.6% share. Finally for the evening, episode 4 looked at the Clockwork Droids and featured a screening of The Girl in the Fireplace. The episode had 0.55 million viewers with a 2.5% share.

BBC Three outrated the other digital channels for most of the evening, just edging ahead of ITV2 and ITV3.

Thursday's showing of The Science of Doctor Who had an Appreciation Index of 85. Buzzcocks: The Doctor Who Special had an AI of 82.

BBC One programme introductions may be subject to interruptions by the Doctor, as witnessed this evening on the channel when he popped up before Strictly Come Dancing! The BBC have now made a clean version of that ident available to watch:



The 'interruption' was preceded by the broadcast of the 40 second version of The Day of The Doctor trailer, as released by the BBC yesterday.

An extended trailer for The Day of the Doctor was broadcast on BBC One tonight, airing between Strictly Come Dancing and Atlantis at around 8:00pm.

BBC Three has announced it will host a celebration show, Doctor Who Live: The Afterparty directly after the BBC One screening of The Day of the Doctor.

No details are yet available on the content or the guests on the programme.

Doctor Who's 50th-anniversary episode The Day of the Doctor will air on BBC One at 7.50pm on Saturday 23rd November.

The time was confirmed just over half an hour ago - at 2.34pm GMT - by the BBC One Facebook page.

This now finalises things for the global simulcast and cinema screenings and means, for example, that it will start at 11.50am the same day in Los Angeles and at 8.50am the next day in Auckland.

UPDATE - 4.35pm GMT: BBC America has since confirmed that it will be showing the episode at 2.50pm ET on 23rd November, and the Canadian channel Space has confirmed that its commercial-free simulcast will also begin at 2.50pm ET that day.

The National Media Museum in Bradford has finalised details of its free exhibition showcasing Doctor Who fans' devotion to the series over its 50 years.

Following an appeal in the summer for items and stories, hundreds of personal objects were offered by members of the public for Doctor Who and Me: 50 Years of Doctor Who Fans, which explores what it means to be a devotee of the show in its 50th-anniversary year, bringing together items that people around the world have collected, created, drawn, assembled, and bought over the past half-century.

It resulted in hundreds of offers, and exhibition curator Toni Booth said: In addition to a vast array of objects loaned from the public, the exhibition includes fans' stories and experiences relating just how much they love Doctor Who and why, how they have organised themselves, produced fanzines, attended conventions around the world, and now make use of the internet and social media to discuss the programme.

Among the objects on display are the following:

• A model TARDIS made in 1978/9 by then schoolboy Mike Tucker for his own amateur movie - he went on to become a visual effects assistant on the show during the classic era and model unit supervisor when the programme returned

• Rare, original artefacts provided by David J Howe and Colin Young, including the Servo Robot prop from the 1968 adventure The Wheel in Space, artwork from Doctor Who annuals and Target novels (including art by David McAllister and Andrew Skilleter), and authentic 1970s Palitoy and Louis Marx toys
• Some of fan modelling pioneer Julian Vince's originals, including his first Dalek
• Several full-size replicas from the show, including K-9, Daleks, the TARDIS, Cybermen, and various monster masks
• A very rare 1960s Dalek Oracle board game
• A newly-uncovered poster of Tom Baker and scarf demonstrating semaphore
• A postcard from the BBC sent to a young fan in 1975 outlining the instructions to knit a Tom Baker scarf - the resulting scarf, knitted by the fan's mum, is also on display
• Memorabilia from the Longleat 20th-anniversary event, including tickets and a programme
• 1970s/80s collector cards from Typhoo Tea and Weetabix
• An original script from Dragonfire

In a change to the original plan, the display will now run from Saturday 23rd November to Sunday 9th February, and the museum - which also has free entry - has organised a launch party for Friday 22nd November to mark both the exhibition and the show's 50th anniversary. Starting at 7.30pm and open to all, this free event will give people the chance to have a preview of the exhibition and will also have entertainment in the form of performance poetry from Rod Tame, music, and a flash open-mic event for attendees. There is no need to book for the party - just turn up.

Anyone wanting to take part in the open-mic event, in which they can read some of their fan fiction or perform a song or a poem - basically, anything family-friendly that has been inspired by Doctor Who - must let the museum know by e-mailing Sophie Loftus at sophie.loftus@nationalmediamuseum.org.uk by no later than Sunday 17th November. Names will be selected at random and people notified in advance if they have a slot. The open-mic pieces should last no more than three minutes.

General entertainment channel Watch reaches the Ninth and Tenth Doctors' eras this weekend with its UK premiere run of the BBC America celebratory series The Doctors Revisited - and Doctor Who News has been given exclusive clips from both the latest documentaries.

The 11-part series, consisting of 30-minute episodes, features the story behind each Doctor, alongside footage from their era, plus a specially-curated selection of stories, and the next two editions centre on the Doctor as played by Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant.

Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited - The Ninth Doctor airs on Saturday 9th November at 2pm, followed by the episodes Bad Wolf at 2.30pm and The Parting of the Ways at 3.30pm.

Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited - The Tenth Doctor airs on Sunday 10th November at 2pm, followed by the episodes Silence In The Library at 2.30pm and Forest of the Dead at 3.30pm.

The series will conclude on Saturday 16th November when Watch focuses on the Eleventh Doctor's era.

BBC Worldwide have released the details for the forthcoming DVD of The Enemy of the World, which is due out in the United Kingdom from the 25th November 2013 (plus an exclusive BBC Shop release on the 22nd November).
