Hugo Award hat-trick for Moffat

Steven Moffat has won his third Hugo Award in a row for an episode of Doctor Who, after his 2007 episode "Blink" won the Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form category in the 2008 awards, given at the WorldCon event in Denver last night. This is according to a run-down of winners on the HugoAwards.org website.

The Hugo Awards celebrate the best of science-fiction across various media. "Blink", which was directed by Hettie Macdonald, was nominated alongside Paul Cornell's two-parter "Human Nature"/"The Family of Blood" and Catherine Treganna's Torchwood episode "Captain Jack Harkness".

Moffat is pictured right at last year's ceremony, with the Hugo Award he won for "The Girl in the Fireplace".

Vote Dalek

Doctor Who themed cover for Radio Times has been nominated as one of the best magazine covers of all time.

The poll, conducted by industry publication Magazine Week 2008, consists of a series of covers nominated by UK magazine editors. The general public is invited to vote for their favourite.

The Radio Times nominated cover is the Vote Dalek edition from May 2005. The edition was published in the week the first series episode Dalek was shown and the UK's last general election was held. The cover was nominated by the editor of Gardeners' World, who described the cover as capturing the essence of the mood of the nation in a brilliant and original way.

Other covers nominated include "Posh and Becks'" wedding on the cover of OK, Diana, Princess of Wales on Vogue and a two-fingered salute on the front of Time Out.

The winner will be announced during the week beginning 29 September.

Tate and Agyeman nominated for award

BBC News reports that both Catherine Tate and Freema Agyemanhave been nominated in the "Favourite Female TV Star" category at this year's British version of the Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice awards.

The awards, run by digital children's television channel Nickelodeon, see children vote for their favourite personalities and programmes. Tate and Agyeman are nominated alongside Miley Cyrus and Miranda Cosgrove. In the "Favourite Male TV Star" category, David Tennant is nominated, facing competition from Dylan Sprouse, Josh Peck and Robin Hood star Jonas Armstrong.

Doctor Who itself is nominated as "Favourite Family TV Show", up against three ITV shows - The X-Factor, Britain's Got Talent and Harry Hill's TV Burp. The Daleks are nominated as "Favourite Baddie", alongside Simon Cowell, Plankton and Randy Orton.

The BBC News report claims that these four nominations are a record for one programme. Votes can be cast on the Nickelodeon website. The awards ceremony will be held in London on the 13th of September.

Davies Awarded Honorary Fellowship

Doctor Who Executive Producer Russell T. Davies has received an honorary fellowship by Cardiff University for achieving international distinction in his field.

Born in Swansea, Davies became the lead writer and executive producer behind Doctor Who's successful return to the small screen.

In his speech to a packed auditorium, Davies spoke of his pride in his work in Cardiff.

"For those of you who don't know, we make Doctor Who in this city, and over the past four years we have made Cardiff like the surface of Mars and Pluto.

"We’ve made it look like Italy, we’ve made it look like Delhi and we’ve made it look like Belgium.”

He added: "It only just goes to prove you can do anything, anywhere, it doesn’t always mean you have to go London."

Russell T Davies awarded OBE

Russell T Davies, the lead writer and executive producer of Doctor Who and the man who has spearheaded the revival of the programme since 2003, has been created an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire - OBE - in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. One of the highest civilian honours available to a British subject, the OBE is awarded by the Queen, on the advice of the Government, and has been given to Davies for his services to drama.

The Times quotes Davies as saying: "I'm delighted to accept, and I hope it does the whole industry a bit of good, for the writing of television drama to be recognised." Davies is the second Doctor Who producer to have been accorded the honour - the late Verity Lambert was given an OBE in 2002.

According to the Press Association, the BBC has released a statement saying: "We are delighted for Russell - he is one of this country's greatest writers and it is fantastic that his talent has been recognised in this way."

Shearman nominated for Awards

After winning a Sony award for The Chain Gang, his serial for BBC7, Robert Shearman (DALEK, The Chimes of Midnight) has been nominated for two major awards for his short story collection Tiny Deaths.

He's on the shortlist for the Edge Hill Short Story Prize, awarded in July, one of the highest honors in the UK for single author collections. Last year's nominees included Neil Gaiman.

Tiny Deaths is also longlisted for the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Prize, the highest prize in the world for the form, which will be announced in September. Press releases for both make great mention of Shearman's work on Doctor Who, and his dealings with Daleks!

BAFTA win for Moffat

Steven Moffat has tonight been awarded the British Academy Television Award (BAFTA) for Best Writer, for the script of his 2007 Doctor Who episode "Blink". The Award was presented at the annual BAFTA Craft Awards ceremony, which honours those who work behind-the-scenes in the industry. Moffat won the award ahead of Jimmy McGovern (for "The Street"), Tony Marchant (for "The Mark of Cain") and Heidi Thomas (for "Cranford"). Full details can be found on the BAFTA website.

One of the highest accolades available to a British scriptwriter, it is Moffat's second BAFTA Award in recent weeks, having also won the BAFTA Cymru (Welsh BAFTAs) scriptwriting category, again for "Blink".

BAFTA Cymru triumphs

Doctor Who has won six categories at the 17th annual BAFTA Cymru Awards, given to films and television programmes produced in Wales. The ceremony was held tonight at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

The programme took the awards for Best Drama Series (Phil Collinson, for "Voyage of the Damned"), Best Screenwriter (Steven Moffat, for "Blink"), Best Sound (BBC Wales Sound team), Best Director, Drama (James Strong, "Voyage of the Damned"), Best Director of Photography (Ernie Vincze for "Voyage of the Damned") and Best Make-Up (Barbara Southcott and Neill Gorton at Millennium FX for "The Shakespeare Code".)

Spin-off series Torchwood took one award, Best Costume for the episode "Captain Jack Harkness".

Moths nominated for Sony Award

Toby Hadoke's play Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarfopened in London's West End last night, and a successful performance was topped off by the news that the radio version of the production had been nominated in the Best Drama category of the prestigious Sony Awards.

Wednesday's opening night included Fenella Woolgar(Bright Young Things, Steven Moffat's Jekyll and soon to be Agatha Christie in the current series of Doctor Who, and seen right with Hadoke), Justin Edwards (Perrier Award nominee and star of BBC4's The Thick Of It) and Ian Boldsworth (a.k.a. comedian Ray Peacock, who also appeared in the Doctor Who episode Blink).

Hadoke's press release claims that Doctor Who luminaries Paul CornellRob Shearman and Louise Jameson will also be attending to support the show during the run.

The remaining dates are 10th, 11th, 12th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th April (7.30pm start time, except 12th and 19th, when it's a 3.30pm start).

The BBC 7 Radio adaptation, also available as an audio book, is now in the running for a Sony Award, the radio equivalent of the Oscars and the highest accolade a radio production can receive. The awards themselves take place on May 12th.
