Paddington Who? auction in progressBookmark and Share

Saturday, 20 December 2014 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Paddington Who? by Peter Capaldi (Credit: London & Partners)The Paddington Who? statue designed by Peter Capaldi is currently available to bid on in an auction by Christies in aid of the NSPCC and ChildLine. The auction runs until just after 3:00pm on the 7th January, and at the time of writing is at £2,800.

The auction notes report:
Peter Capaldi, the current Doctor Who in the hit BBC TV series, also stars in the new Paddington movie as Mr Curry. He has combined the bear with The Doctor to create a thrilling marmalade-eating time traveller. Has there ever been a more intrepid, daring and sure-to-find-trouble combination? One word of warning though: beware of the Dalek on his back!

The TARDIS is known to transport The Doctor and his companions through time and space on the TV series, so where better for Paddington Who to end up than right where time begins and ends each day: on the Prime Meridian line? From here there are a number of ways to explore the world’s history, and possibly its future, with attractions to enjoy such as the Royal Observatory, the National Maritime Museum and Queen’s House. Just make sure you pack enough sandwiches under your hat before you leave home.

The statue is still available to view outside the Peter Harrison Planetarium at the Greenwich Royal Observatory until 4:30pm on the 30th December.

DWAS Auction in memory of Verity LambertBookmark and Share

Saturday, 2 August 2014 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The Doctor Who Appreciation Society have sent details about an auction they are running, proceeds of which will be used for the recent commemoration of Doctor Who's first producer Verity Lambert and to the Breast Cancer Campaign.

Following the unveiling last week of a heritage plaque to commemorate the life and career of Verity Lambert, which was celebrated with a free-to-enter screening of An Adventure in Space and Time at Riverside Studios, DWAS is now running an auction via its eBay site. The auction is to raise funds towards the cost of the plaque and the launch event at Riverside. Additionally, 10% of the final selling price of every item will be donated directly to the Breast Cancer Campaign in memory of Verity, as will any funds raised in excess of the heritage costs.

Lots of people and businesses have been very generous and as such we have a wide range of items, many of which should be within the reach of most people. There are a substantial number of signed photographs, signed DVDs and Blu Rays and a couple of very special items, including a VIP Package for two at next year’s ‘Who at The Hilbre 3’ convention in West Kirby (donated by Fans Like Us) and a unique collection of ‘Audio Visuals’ items (donated by Miwk Publishing).

The plaque itself has attracted a lot of interest and remains on display at Riverside Studios. If this fund raising is successful, then with the support of Fandom, DWAS would hope to undertake a similar project in the future..

A link to the auction can be found via the DWAS website.

Auton Carnival Mask Sells For Thousands In Online AuctionBookmark and Share

Sunday, 8 September 2013 - Reported by John Bowman
A rare Auton carnival mask from the Third Doctor story Terror of the Autons fetched more than £5,000 when it was auctioned on eBay.

The painted fibreglass head, with felt eyes, was sold on the online auction site by London-based miss-p73, who said in the item description that it had been given to her family in the late-1970s when her father worked for a studio transport company. She added that the accompanying foam rubber hat had long since perished, and said that the mask had been "much loved and played with" in her youth, which had led to it being "a bit chipped and scraped".

After 51 bids the prop - which was only available to buyers in the UK - finally went for £5,154 when the auction ended on Thursday 5th September just after 10.25pm.

The carnival masks were worn by the Autons to disguise their true nature as they handed out deadly plastic daffodils to unsuspecting members of the public.

The four-part adventure started Jon Pertwee's second series as the Doctor. Written by Robert Holmes and directed by Barry Letts, it aired between 2nd and 23rd January 1971. Not only did the story feature the second appearance of the Autons in the show, it also marked the debuts of Katy Manning, Roger Delgado, and Richard Franklin as, respectively, Jo Grant, the Master, and Captain Mike Yates.

Production Designer's Notebook for AuctionBookmark and Share

Saturday, 31 August 2013 - Reported by Marcus
The personal notebook of Tristan Peatfield is being auctioned for charity.

Tristan Peatfield was the production designer on Doctor Who for two episodes in 2010, Amy's Choice and The Lodger, covering the gap between the departure of Ed Thomas and the arrival of Michael Pickwoad.

The item is a 14cm x 21cm black covered "Guildhall" notebook, which contains notes on a number of productions on which Peatfield worked, including at least 13 pages dedicated to Doctor Who. It includes text, designs and drawings in pencil by Peatfield and his colleague Peter McKinstry, including the original design for the "Lodger TARDIS" console and "Amy Pond, TARDIS Pilot".

The notebook is offered on behalf of Peatfield to raise money for The Isabella Peatfield Memorial Fund, a charity raising money for children's projects in Sri Lanka. Tristan and Kim Peatfield's daughter Isabella died in the country on Boxing Day 2004, the youngest British victim of the Indian Ocean Tsunami.

The ebay listing is now live and the auction runs for the next nine days.
