Big Finish: January releases

Tuesday, 15 January 2013 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Big Finish have released details on the latest adventures for the Doctor and his companions in January.

The Wrong Doctors (available to order)

The Wrong Doctors stars Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor and Bonnie Langford as Melanie Bush. Disentangling a particularly knotty piece of series continuity, it tells the tale of how the Sixth Doctor attempts to put his timeline in order, having been introduced to Mel before they'd technically met. Unfortunately, his efforts go somewhat awry, and suddenly there are two Doctors roaming Mel's hometown of Pease Pottage. And that's not the worst of what's going on...

A brain-bending adventure from the mind of Matt Fitton, The Wrong Doctors begins a brand new trilogy of tales for the Sixth Doctor and Mel, with Bonnie Langford returning to the main range after a 71-release absence! The series continues in February with Spaceport Fear and March with The Seeds of War.

With Evelyn gone, the Doctor sets course for his destiny... in the form of his first meeting with Miss Melanie Bush, a computer programmer from the village of Pease Pottage, currently busy rehearsing with the local Amateur Dramatic Society – and blissfully unaware that her future is on its way, in his TARDIS.

Make that two TARDISes. Because at that very moment, a slightly younger Doctor is flying into Pease Pottage, too – returning his future companion Melanie Bush to her rightful place and time, after they were flung together during the course of his Time Lord trial.

Time travel is a complicated business – the iguanadon terrorising Pease Pottage being a case in point. But how much more complicated could things possibly become, if the wrong Doctor were to bump into the wrong Mel?
The Auntie Matter (available to order)

The Auntie Matter launches a brand new run of adventures starring Tom Baker and Mary Tamm, which will also see the return of John Leeson as K9.

England in the 1920s. The Doctor and Romana are enjoying a leisurely lifestyle as the Lord and Lady of a London townhouse. But trouble never stays away from them for long, and before they know it a chance discovery of alien technology leads them deep into the heart of the English countryside where a malign presence lurks. As the Doctor dodges deadly butlers and ferocious gamekeepers, Romana is faced with a malevolent Aunt and an even deadlier peril - marriage.

"It’s Saturday teatime in 1978 all over again," says producer David Richardson, "as Tom and Mary recapture their glorious partnership from Season 16 in 1978. It’s desperately sad that Mary is no longer with us to enjoy this release, but she adored playing Romana again, and was thrilled by her role in this run of seven stories."

Featuring in this intriguing tale from the pen of Jonathan Morris are Julia McKenzie (the titular detective in Marple) and Lucy Griffiths (the latest season of True Blood, Robin Hood's Marian). The Auntie Matter takes its inspiration from the works of PG Wodehouse, so it'll provide an excellent accompaniment to the Blandings series which began on BBC1 on Sunday!

England in the 1920s.

Whilst K9 is off in the TARDIS leading the Black Guardian on a wild goose chase, the Doctor and Romana are enjoying a leisurely lifestyle as the Lord and Lady of a London townhouse.

The Flames of Cadiz (available to order)

The Flames of Cadiz is a two-disc release starring original 1963 companion Ian and the Doctor's granddaughter Susan, once more played by William Russell and Carole Ann Ford respectively. Written by Marc Platt, it finds the TARDIS travellers in Spain in the late sixteenth century. The country is at war with England – and the travellers find themselves on the wrong side of the battle lines...

"This is a four-part pure historical for the original TARDIS team," says David Richardson. "Marc has written the most beautiful script, as The Flames of Cadiz echoes the glories of adventures like The Aztecs and The Reign of Terror. It’s a reminder that Earth history can be just as terrifying as outer space."

The Flames of Cadiz also features Nabil Elouahabi as Esteban.

The TARDIS materializes in Spain in the late sixteenth century. The country is at war with England – and the travellers find themselves on the wrong side of the battle lines.

When Ian and his new friend Esteban are captured by the Inquisition, the Doctor, Susan and Barbara plan to rescue them.

But these are dark days in human history. And heretics face certain death...

Big Finish: The Light At The End

Wednesday, 9 January 2013 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Big Finish have announced a special 100-minute story starring all five surviving classic series Doctors to be released for the 50th Anniversary. The Light At The End will see their paths suddenly intersect when they face imminent destruction . . .

The story is written and directed by Nicholas Briggs, who said:
We wanted to do a proper, fully-fledged multi-Doctor story for this very special occasion, and it's wonderful that all the surviving Doctors threw themselves behind the project so enthusiastically. That's not to say the first three Doctors don't appear – we wanted to pay homage to the whole history of the classic series.
As well as the Doctors, popular companions will also be involved from each era: for Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor it's Leela as played by Louise Jameson; then for Peter Davison there's Nyssa (Sarah Sutton); for Colin Baker's era there's Peri (Nicola Bryant); Sylvester McCoy's sees Ace (Sophie Aldred); and from the Paul McGann Big Finish adventures there's Charley, as played by India Fisher.

And if that wasn't enough, producer David Richardson added:
Geoffrey Beevers is back to create mayhem as the Master, and there will be a number of appearances from some much-cherished old friends from the TV series . . .
Released in November 2013, two versions of the story will be available: a standard two-disc release comprising just the episodes, and a limited edition five-disc release that will have two additional documentaries, plus Companion Chronicles tale The Revenants (performed by William Russell, previously available as a Doctor Who Magazine download).

Big Finish: Dark Eyes

Friday, 16 November 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Big Finish have released details about their new adventure for the Eighth Doctor, as played by Paul McGann:
The Eighth Doctor in new costume. Photo: Big Finish"We have a long history of adventures with the Eighth Doctor," says writer/director Nicholas Briggs, "and we'd just got to the end of four years' worth of adventures with Sheridan Smith as Lucie Miller. So, I wanted to create a fresh start for Paul McGann and our listeners. It's a real jumping-on point where the Doctor is embroiled in a whole new, gigantic adventure. You can listen to this without ever having heard an Eighth Doctor audio drama before and understand every word and nuance. Of course, if you want to go back and find out what happened before, you can always do that too."

Dark Eyes introduces a new companion for the Eighth Doctor in the form of Molly O’Sullivan, played by Ruth Bradley, a volunteer nurse who he meets in France during the First World War. "I wanted there to be a new companion who had something different to offer," Nick continues. "Someone mentioned that there'd never been an Irish companion in the TARDIS and I was already thinking of making her someone who was involved in the First World War, so the two things came together to make something rather unique in the form of Molly O'Sullivan. She's a girl who's seen and experienced the most terrible, harrowing things, so she's no innocent and she's not really a willing participant in the Doctor's adventures. Also, she is the 'Dark Eyes' of the title, so the adventure is all about her relationship with the Doctor."

Dark Eyes also showcases a new costume for Paul McGann’s Doctor, which was designed and made by WETA Workshop. "That's something that Paul McGann worked out with an great Australian guy called William Geradts who organises conventions Down Under," Nick explains. "He and Paul got chatting about creating a new image for the Eighth Doctor and Bill got WETA to make it for him. Paul loved it and came to us, asking if we'd be prepared to use it. Since the Eighth Doctor had had so many adventures with us, and it seemed odd that he'd keep that Wild Bill Hickok costume on for so long, we thought it was high time for a change. Our Doctors show so much loyalty, continuing to work with us over the years, so we're always happy to incorporate their ideas and this was one we were very keen to embrace. We sent the images to the BBC, they approved them, so off we went! It's a brave new era with a great new look."

As mentioned above, McGann is joined by Ruth Bradley, who recently appeared in the mini-series Titanic (which also co-starred Jenna-Louise Coleman) and is known in sci-fi circles for her role as Emily Merchant in Primeval. Peter Egan plays Straxas: the actor is about to appear in Downton Abbey this Christmas, but is probably best known from Ever Decreasing Circles; for Big Finish he previously played Moloch in Protect and Survive. Toby Jones plays Kotris: the actor's Doctor Who credentials include playing the Doctor himself - aka the Dream Lord - in 2010's series episode Amy's Choice; other credits include playing Dobby in the Harry Potter films, and also appearing in Titanic alongside Bradley.

Dark Eyes (available to order)
by Nicholas Briggs
starring Paul McGann, Ruth Bradley and Peter Egan

'I really hoped it would be a wonderful view... to look back from the end of everything... to see how things finally turned out.'

The Doctor is looking for hope. But instead, he finds himself on a mission. The Time Lords have uncovered terrifying fragments of an insane plot to destroy the universe. And somehow, at the centre of that plot is one, random female in Earth’s history, Molly O’Sullivan.

Soon, the Doctor and Molly find themselves thrown headlong into a series of dangerous and terrifying adventures, with the dreaded Daleks never far behind them.

Saturday, 27 October 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Big Finish have updated their details for releases in their Doctor Who range this month, including an early release of an adventure originally planned for November:

UNIT DominionThe five-disc box set Doctor Who – UNIT: Dominion finds the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) taking on invading forces from another dimension. Love and WarOriginally starting its life as one of Virgin's Doctor Who: New Adventures novels, Love and War was now-TV-Who-writer Paul Cornell's second novel for the range, and the one which introduced Bernice Summerfield, a stalwart of Big Finish's audio output literally from day one.

Doctor Who: Love and War is an audio adaptation by Jacqueline Rayner of that novel, to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Benny's creation. It finds the Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) and Ace (Sophie Aldred) visiting the planet Heaven, where they meet Professor Bernice Summerfield (Lisa Bowerman) and discover dark deeds afoot that will change the Doctor and Ace's relationship forever... The three-disc set includes a special prelude plus an extensive behind the scenes documentary.

Voyage To VenusFinally, a whole month earlier than scheduled, is Doctor Who – Voyage to Venus. The story finds Victorian investigators of infernal incidents Jago and Litefoot off on a jaunt with the Sixth Doctor, in the aftermath of their latest series of adventures in their own spin-off series. Their first stop is the planet Venus, mentioned on several occasions in Doctor Who but not actually visited - and what a wealth of strange creatures both fair and foul it brings!

Colin Baker once more plays the Sixth Doctor, while Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxer again embody the olden-days adventurers Henry Gordon Jago and George Litefoot as they're taken out of the comfort zone of their own time and space for the first time!

Voyage to Venus is available now at a special bargain price, and all three titles are included in the Special Releases bundle offer (extended until December) that also includes the new epic Eighth Doctor tale Doctor Who: Dark Eyes (out in November) and another story starring the Sixth Doctor with Jago and Litefoot – Doctor Who: Voyage to the New World (out in December).

People Roundup

Thursday, 18 October 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Paul McGann is to be interviewed as part of the Personal Development Planning Week at the Liverpool John Moores University on Tuesday 23rd October. The actor will be there to discuss how his own career has developed. The event is only open to university staff and students. [LJMU, 15 Oct 2012]

Russell T Davies is to be a guest on BBC Radio 2's Graham Norton show on 27th October, to tie in with the premiere of his new children's show Wizards vs Aliens on CBBC on 29th October. Questions can be submitted to the show address.

Arthur Darvill is adding theatrical composition to his ever-growing list of activities; the actor/musician said: "I write music as well, so I work a lot with Sean Walker. We've been working on a twisted version of The Bacchae called The Lightening Child (written by Che Walker) with carnival music, so I've co-written music for that. We made it really big and refused to scale it down. Finally, the Globe said they would love to do it, so we’ll be doing that next summer." [Independent, 17 Oct 2012]

Actress Chase Masterson talks about working with two Doctors on the forthcoming Big Finish audio dramas The Shadow Heart and Night of the Stormcrow: "They were all absolutely charming and very welcoming to me, and it was big fun to see them exude the same playfulness and brilliant quirks that they displayed on screen. Tom and Sylvester were particularly generous with stories of working with other British greats, including Olivier and Gielgud and McKellen, and I even got Sylvester to do a command performance on the spoons. Some of my now-favorite career moments include hearing Sylvester recount stories of the roots of his career in vaudeville, as well as tales of his upcoming, key role in The Hobbit trilogy. Also truly lovely and deserving of her reputation as a favorite Companion is the gorgeous Louise Jameson. What is even more stunning about Louise is the richly aware person she is, and her kindness and personal attention to everyone she comes into contact with." [Star Trek, 11 Oct 2012]

Nina Toussaint-White is currently playing one of four twentysomething white witches in the new contemporary ITV2 comedy-drama Switch. The six-episode show, which started on Monday 15th October, is set in Camden Town and Kensington, with Toussaint-White's character, Jude, as the fashionista of the group, and she said she couldn't believe how alike she was to her. "When I first read the script I thought, 'That's me!' I could see myself in the role because we are so similar. We're both quite bolshie, energetic people. Jude is a hedonist. I wouldn't say I'm a hedonist as such, but I sometimes speak before I think. I like to go out and have fun and party. She's confident and loud, fun and care-free, and I think that's what I'm like," she said. [ITV Press Centre]

BBC Four is to show Mark Gatiss's documentary Horror Europa on Tuesday 30th October at 9pm, it has been confirmed. The 90-minute journey through European horror cinema is a follow-up to his 2010 series A History of Horror for the same channel. [BBC Media Centre, 18 Oct 2012]

Phil Collinson is leaving his post as Coronation Street producer but will be staying at ITV to take up a new role of drama development. He has produced the soap opera since July 2010 and will hand over the reins to current Emmerdale producer Stuart Blackburn in January 2013. He said: "It's been an honour to produce Coronation Street and I'll be sad to leave. But the drama can only stay at the top of its game if the producer is re-energised every two to three years." [ITV Press Centre, 17 Oct 2012]

Big Finish: UNIT Dominion

Wednesday, 17 October 2012 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Later this month Big Finish release Doctor Who – UNIT: Dominion, an epic five-disc box set that reunites the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) with his cat burglar companion Raine Creevy (Beth Chalmers) in a fight to save the universe. Joining the fray are Dr Elizabeth Klein (Tracey Childs), scientific advisor to UNIT, and a future incarnation of the Doctor (Alex Maqueen).

Producer David Richardson said:
UNIT: Dominion is a massive story. The script was enormous and we realized when we were making it that it’s actually the same length as The Invasion. But it needed to be that long to tell a tale of such scope, which crosses between multiple dimensions.

To count down to the release, Big Finish have released a number of digital postcards, such as the ones below which feature the Seventh Doctor, Raine, the Other Doctor, Sergeant Pete Wilson, the Nexus, the Skyheads and the Mind Leeches.

The boxed set can be pre-ordered on its own, or as part of a fifteen disc bundle from Big Finish with productions Love and War, Dark Eyes, Voyage to Venus and Voyage to the New.
