Nominations for Spike TV's 2011 Scream Awards have been announced and voting is now open to the public.

Doctor Who has been nominated for 'Best TV Show' while Matt Smith and Karen Gillan are up for 'Best Science Fiction Actor' and 'Best Science Fiction Actress' for their roles as the eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond.

The ceromony will be taped on Saturday, October 15 and will premiere on Spike TV on Tuesday, October 18 (9:00–11:00 PM, ET/PT).

SFX have launched the Sci-Fi Awards for 2012, and unsurprisingly Doctor Who and Torchwood are suggestions for a number of the categories.


Both shows are suggested in the Best TV Show; others include Being Human, Fringe, Game of Thrones, Misfits, Primeval, and The Walking Dead. Matt Smith and Karen Gillan are suggested for the Best Sci-Fi Actor and Actress categories, with the latter also featuring Alex Kingston (River Song), Suranne Jones (Idris) and Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper/Torchwood); other nominees include Aidan Turner and Russell Tovey for Being Human, Andrew Lincoln for The Walking Dead, and Antonia Thomas and Lauren Socha for Misfits. Myles and Jones also pop up in the Sexiest Female category, with John Barrowman represented in Sexiest Male.

Best Monster or Villain sees Madame Kovarian and The Silence suggested, against enemies such as The Red Skull from Captain America, Crowley (played by Doctor Who guest star Mark Sheppard) from Supernatural and Loki from Thor. Best Special Effect is represented by the opening sequence from A Good Man Goes To War; this competes against Asgard from Thor, Paul from Paul, and the train crash in Super 8.

Doctor Who is also suggested in the Best Collectable, Model, Toy or Boardgame category, with the Character Building TARDIS mini set competing with the Fifth Doctor and Tegan fancy dress outfits, plus items like Thor's Hammer and Captain America headphones.

Finally, the UK censored scenes of Jack from Torchwood: Miracle Day is mentioned in the Biggest Disappointment or Missed Opportunity category; this contains amongst other things the fairies in True Blood, Stan Lee absent from X-Men First Class, and Outcasts!


These are SFX's suggestions - you can actually vote for anything that has been released, published or broadcast between 15th December 2010 and 19th October 2011 via the voting site.

The winners will be revealed live at the SFX Weekender that takes place in early February 2012 and will be hosted by author Robert Rankin; the results will also be printed in Issue 219 of SFX (due out on the 8th February).

Doctor Who has won a HUGO award for the 2010 series conclusion The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang.

Written by showrunner Steven Moffat and directed by Toby Haynes, the story was shown last June when it wrapped up the events of Matt Smith's first series as The Doctor.

The story beat two other Doctor Who stories, A Christmas Carol and Vincent and the Doctor as well as The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan and **** Me, Ray Bradbury by Rachel Bloom, to win the award for Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form).

The award is the fourth for Steven Moffat, having previously won for The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace and Blink. Last year the award was won by The Waters of Mars written by Russell T Davies and Phil Ford.

The award for Best Related Work was given to Chicks Dig Time Lords: A Celebration of Doctor Who by the Women Who Love It, edited by Lynne M. Thomas and Tara O’Shea and published by Mad Norwegian.

The book is a series of essays which delve into the extraordinary aspects of being a female “Doctor Who” enthusiast. Essays include Carole Barrowman discussing what it was like to grow up with her brother John, columnist Jackie Jenkins providing a Bridget Jones’ Diary-style memoir of working on “Doctor Who Magazine,” and novelist Lloyd Rose analyzing Rose’s changes between the ninth and tenth Doctors.

The Hugo Awards are given every year for the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements of the previous year. The award is named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneering science fiction magazine Amazing Stories.

Hugo Awards have been presented every year since 1955. The 2011 winners were announced on Saturday evening, at Renovation, the 69th World Science Fiction convention held in Reno, Nevada.

Matt Smith and David Tennant have been nominated for "Best Actor" in the 2011 TV Choice Awards shortlist. Both will face competition from Colin Morgan and Benedict Cumberbatch.

For Best Actress, Karen Gillan and the late Elisabeth Sladen are nominated alongside Amanda Burton and Vicky McClure.

Also nominated is the show itself for "Best Family Drama", where it is up against Casualty, Merlin and Waterloo Road.

Steven Moffat's and Mark Gatiss' Sherlock has been nominated for "Best New Drama" along with Single Father, starring David Tennant, and Downton Abbey starring Hugh Bonneville. Toby Whithouse's Being Human, starring Russell Tovey and Lenora Crichlow, has been nomiated for "Best Drama Series".

The annual Portal Awards have been announced by Airlock Alpha, with Doctor Who once more well represented within the various categories.

Best Actor sees Matt Smith nominated for his role as The Doctor; he will face competition from Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead), Sean Bean (Game of Thrones), Joshua Jackson (Fringe), and Eddie McClintock (Warehouse 13). This award was won overwhelmingly by David Tennant last year with some 68% of the vote (with second place going to John Barrowman with 10%!).

Similarly, Best Actress sees co-star Karen Gillan pitted against Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Anna Torv (Fringe), Paula Malcomson (Caprica), and Summer Glau (The Cape). Gillan lost out last year to Eve Myles for her portrayal as Gwen Cooper in Torchwood: Children of Earth.

Doctor Who itself is nominated for Best Television Series, which it won last year (Torchwood came second). This year sees it up against Fringe, Game of Thrones, Stargate: Universe and The Walking Dead. Also, The Doctor's Wife has been nominated in the Best Television Episode category, facing episodes from Fringe, Stargate: Universe, Game of Thrones and Caprica.

Alex Kingston has been nominated for Best Television Special Guest, an award she won last year for The Time of Angels; this time her role in Day of the Moon is being recognised, and she faces competition from another Doctor Who guest, Michael Gambon for A Christmas Carol. Christopher Lloyd and Leonard Nimoy are also nominated for Fringe, plus Michael Rosenbaum for Smallville.

The late Elisabeth Sladen has been nominated for the Gene Roddenberry Award which honours lifetime achievement; the other nominees are H.G. Wells, J.J. Abrams, Rick Berman and Gene L. Coon.

Tonight saw the 2011 BAFTA Cymru Awards Ceremony take place at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures were nominated for a number of awards, and unlike last weekend's BAFTA Television Awards they did triumph in a number of categories.

The Children's Programme award went to The Sarah Jane Adventures and its producer Brian Minchin for last year's Death of the Doctor. Meanwhile, Doctor Who won two of its categories: Tim Rickett received the Sound award for his work on A Christmas Carol, whilst Mark Hutchingson won the Lighting award for The Eleventh Hour.

Other nominations included Music and Entertainment Programme, where Doctor Who at the Proms lost out to Young Musician 2010: The Final; Make Up and Hair saw Sherlock's Claire Pritchard Jones beat last year's winner in this category, Barbara Southcott (nominated for Vampires of Venice); and William Oswald was nominated for Editing: Fiction for The Time of Angels, but the award eventually went to John Gillanders for The Indian Doctor.

Steven Moffat's other show Sherlock did well at the Awards, winning five of the categories; as well as Make Up and Hair above, awards were given for Director of Photography: Fiction (Steve Lawes), Production Design (Arwel Wyn Jones), Director: Fiction (Euros Lyn), and the coveted Television Drama award.

Doctor goes up against Doctor in the 2011 Constellation Awards, with both Matt Smith and David Tennant nominated for their role as The Doctor in the Best Male Performance - Television category.

The Awards, now in their fifth year, are Canada's premier awards rewarding excellence in science fiction film and television. Because they cover programmes broadcast in 2010, both the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor's are eligible. Tennant for his performance in The End of Time - Part Two, and Smith for his performance in last year's Christmas special, A Christmas Carol. David Tennant was given last year's award for his performance in The Waters of Mars. Also nominated is Tony Curran for his portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh in Vincent and the Doctor.

Karen Gillan is nominated for Best Female Performance - Television for her role in Amy's Choice and faces Katherine Jenkins nominated for A Christmas Carol.

Doctor Who is also nominated in the Best Science Fiction Television Series category, a category it has one three times before although it lost out in last year's awards to Supernatural, which has also been nominated for 2010.

Murray Gold earns a nominaton for Doctor Who's music in the Best Technical Accomplishment category, with Steven Moffat and Richard Curtis both being nominated for Best Overall 2010 Science Fiction Film or Television Script, Moffat for The Eleventh Hour and Curtis for Vincent and the Doctor.

The awards will be announced at a Ceremony on July 16, 2011 at the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North hotel.

Steven Moffat had cause to celebrate this evening as he won the award for Drama Series with co-creator Mark Gatiss for their mini-series Sherlock. The show beat off opposition from Being Human, Downton Abbey and Misfits. Sherlock also garnered an award for actor Martin Freeman, who won Best Supporting Actor for his role as John Watson, but missed out in the YouTube Audience Award to The Only Way Is Essex.

However, neither of Moffat's principle stars were able to walk off with the Leading Actor award - both Matt Smith for Doctor Who and Benedict Cumberbatch for Sherlock were pipped to the post by actor Daniel Rigby, who played the young Eric Morecambe in the BBC's Christmas special Eric and Ernie. The other nominee in this category was Jim Broadbent for Channel 4's Any Human Heart.

Matt Smith's nomination heralded the first time a leading actor for Doctor Who has ever been represented for the award.

Voting is now open for the 15th TV Choice Awards, and Doctor Who has been nominated for Best Family Drama - the category it won last year.

The show will be up against spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures, as well as its NTA adversary Waterloo Road; other shows in this category are Casualty, Holby City, Merlin, Primeval and Wild at Heart.

Matt Smith is nominated as Best Actor for Doctor Who; other nominees include former Doctors Christopher Eccleston for The Shadow Line and David Tennant for Single Father, plus Benedict Cumberbatch for Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss's new imagining of Sherlock (which itself is nominated in the Best New Drama category).

Co-star Karen Gillan has been nominated as Best Actress; Elisabeth Sladen is also in this category for The Sarah Jane Adventures, as well as former sidekick Freema Agyeman for Law and Order: UK, and Alex Kingston for Marchlands.


Voting is open online until 10th June 2011, with the winners announced on 13th September.

Hot on the heels of the BAFTA Television Award nominations (with Matt Smith up for the Best Actor award) come the nominations for the 2011 British Academy Cymru Awards; as with previous years Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures are represented in a number of categories:


Last year saw Make-up nominee Barbara Southcott win an award for her work in The End of Time; Doctor Who also won an award in Design for Ed Thomas/The Waters of Mars. The series was also nominated for Drama Series/Serial for Television, but lost out to its spinoff show Torchwood: Children of Earth, which also gained a Lighting award for Will Oswald. The Sarah Jane Adventures also received an award for Interactive.


The Award Ceremony takes place on Sunday 29th May at the Wales Millennium Centre.
