The Deaths and Resurrections of Doctor Who

Wednesday, 2 September 2015 - Reported by Harry Ward
A new book which looks how Doctor Who deals with issues of death, concepts of time travel, regeneration and redemption has been released. Out of Time: The Deaths and Resurrections of Doctor Who is written by Alec Charles, Head of Media at the University of Chester.

The author told Cheshire Today:
It just seemed worth exploring some of the reasons why a low-budget children’s show should have endured for more than half a century. It is a book for enthusiasts of the series but also for people with an interest in cultural studies and theory. I’d hope that a few people who wouldn’t normally read cultural theory but love Doctor Who might gain some new insights from reading it. It uses quite complex ideas (by far greater thinkers than me) to address the subject, but I hope that the topic makes these ideas a bit more accessible.

Doctor Who is one of television’s most enduring and ubiquitously popular series. This study contends that the success of the show lies in its ability, over more than half a century, to develop its core concepts and perspectives: alienation, scientific rationalism and moral idealism. The most extraordinary aspect of this eccentric series rests in its capacity to regenerate its central character and, with him, the generic, dramatic and emotional parameters of the programme.

Out of Time explores the ways in which the series’ immortal alien addresses the nature of human mortality in his ambiguous relationships with time and death. It asks how the status of this protagonist – that lonely god, uncanny trickster, cyber-sceptic and techno-nerd – might call into question the beguiling fantasies of immortality, apotheosis and utopia which his nemeses tend to pursue. Finally, it investigates how this paragon of transgenerational television reflects the ways in which contemporary culture addresses the traumas of change, loss and death.

Contents: Genre Trouble – The Reality Bomb – The Show that Never Dies – A Fate Worse than Death – One Being’s Utopia – Time Can Be Rewritten – Imitatio Christi – Lord of Time – Coping Strategies A Very Naughty Boy – The Uncanny – Everybody Lives

Doctor Who in LEGO Dimensions

Thursday, 9 July 2015 - Reported by Marcus
More details on the incorporation of the Doctor Who Universe into the new world of Lego Dimensions, along with a preview video, have been revealed at the San Diego Comic Con currently being held in California.

As revealed earlier this week Peter Capaldi will be voicing the Twelfth Doctor in the game, due to be released on 27th September. He will be joined in the game by Jenna Coleman and Michelle Gomez playing Clara and Missy respectively. The game pits characters from Doctor Who up against characters from other franchises including Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings, Scooby-Doo and The Simpsons.

The basic LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack will include a Doctor Who level featuring Daleks and Cybermen alongside other monsters from the series. The Doctor Who Level pack add-on will include a LEGO minifigure of the 12th Doctor, LEGO models of the TARDIS and K-9 (both playable), and an additional mission-based Doctor Who level. The Doctor will regenerate through all his incarnations if he is defeated, with the TARDIS interior changing to match. A jukebox in the TARDIS offers your choice of Doctor Who theme music, and the TARDIS and K-9 models can each be physically built and then rebuilt twice “to do entirely different things”.

Peter Capaldi has given an interview to GameSpot where he talks about his excitement at seeing the game series brought to life.
The demands and the ambition that the game makers have imposed upon themselves are very high; they've given themselves the task of creating something that's very entertaining, very exciting, and dramatic.
LEGO Dimensions will be available for Xbox One, the all-in one games and entertainment system from Microsoft and the Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation4 and PlayStation3 computer entertainment systems and the Wii U system from Nintendo.

Kent Police Box to be moved

Monday, 29 June 2015 - Reported by Marcus
The Police Box, currently situated at the Kent Police Museum in Chatham, is to be moved following the closure of the museum at the Dockyard.

The box, which is one of the few remaining original boxes in the country, was on loan to the museum from the The Civil Defence and Emergency Service Preservation Trust. It was installed in Kent in 2008. However the Museum has not been open this year and although there are plans to open a new museum in Maidstone in 2016, the Police Box will not be part of it.

The Police Box will be removed from its current location in August this year and returned to its owners in Scotland.

Until then it can be seen by visitors to The Historic Dockyard in Chatham.

BBC Make it Digital

Sunday, 7 June 2015 - Reported by Marcus
Doctor Who is to form a major part of the new BBC Make it Digital Campaign, heading across the United KIngdom, this summer.

The initiative is a project of BBC Learning and BBC English Regions, with the aim of inspiring a new generation to get creative with coding, programming and digital technology. Over the next three months the tour will travel to 13 locations across the UK beginning in Plymouth Hoe on 27 June. The BBC’s Make it Digital tour is aiming to put digital creativity in the spotlight, and help build the nation’s digital skills through a series of free events across the country.

The event is aiming to inspire audiences to learn about digital using some of the BBC’s best loved brands and live broadcasts, including Doctor Who.

The event offers Doctor Who fans the chance to get to grips with coding by programming The Doctor’s arch enemy, the Daleks, on their quest to retrieve the Orb of Fates. Children are encouraged to become a live Dalek, shoot a Cyberman, then drop the drawbridge, before attempting to tackle the devious Dalek maze as part of the BBC’s Doctor and the Dalek game.

Other brands included in the project include BBC Weather, which uses the variables found in the jet stream to introduce visitors to the basics of coding. Some lucky visitors to the event could also get the chance to present the weather with their BBC local weather presenter. The BBC English Regions Bus will also be present, from where local radio stations will be broadcasting live, as well as offering a behind the scenes peep at how the digital world has revolutionised broadcasting.

Sinead Rocks, Head of BBC Learning, says:
This tour is an important part of BBC Learning’s contribution to the Make it Digital initiative. With it being aimed at a wide age range it’s a great opportunity for both young and older to get to grips with the idea of what digital and coding is all about.

By using popular TV programmes such as Doctor Who and the Weather, we hope to demystify the digital world for the thousands of people we will meet face to face across the summer. This will all be backed up by iWonder guides and school activities as we move into the autumn.
The locations the BBC’s Make it Digital tour is visiting are:
  • Plymouth – 27 June
  • Belfast – 2, 3, & 4 July
  • Cambridge – 11 & 12 July
  • Bristol – 18 & 19 July
  • Sunderland – 25 & 26 July
  • Nottingham - 1 & 2 August
  • Blackpool – 15 & 16 August
  • Bournemouth – 22 & 23 August
  • Cardiff – 30 & 31 August
  • Hull – 5 & 6 September
