Jenny meets Fifth Doctor for Big Finish

Monday, 12 November 2018 - Reported by Marcus
Georgia Tennant / Peter Davison (Credit: Big Finish)There’s a family reunion in The Legacy of Time – Big Finish’s epic new release celebrating 20 years of Doctor Who in Audio. In the fourth story of the deluxe box set, the Fifth Doctor – played by Peter Davison, will be meeting his future daughter Jenny – played by his real-life daughter Georgia Tennant.

In 2019 Big Finish will be celebrating 20 years of creating Doctor Who stories on audio, they are marking the occasion with the biggest audio crossover event in a new box set, The Legacy of Time. Six hour-long stories see characters from the entire history of Doctor Who crossing paths – some for the very first time: Classic and New Series Doctor Who will collide!

In Relative Time by Matt Fitton, Jenny (who also stars in her own new series of adventures: Jenny – The Doctor’s Daughter) meets an earlier regeneration of her father and together they’ll need all their wits about them to defeat Time Lord, the Nine, played by John Heffernan (The Crown, Ripper Street).

Disaster strikes inside the Time Vortex, throwing together the Fifth Doctor and his future daughter Jenny – and the Nine sees an opportunity to steal something huge.

As well as starring in her own series, Jenny – The Doctor’s Daughter, Georgia Tennant also featured alongside her father at the age of 16 in Big Finish’s Eighth Doctor Who release, Red Dawn released in 2000.

David Richardson, producer of The Legacy of Time, told us about bringing the family together
It was just an irresistible idea, the thought of pairing father and daughter, playing father and daughter, in our massive 20th-anniversary special. And it’s great to have Jenny back again after the enormous success of her debut on audio – the series received universally positive reviews and an outpouring of love from listeners, so we’re looking forward to even more adventures with The Doctor’s Daughter.

The Legacy of Time is quite possibly the biggest Doctor Who story we have ever told at Big Finish. It’s been so hugely satisfying to make – I hope everyone finds it just as satisfying to listen to!
Doctor Who: The Legacy of Time will be released in July 2019, marking the 20th anniversary of Big Finish’s first Doctor Who release, The Sirens of Time.

A new Doctor Who Exhibition is being planned for the Welsh Capital by BBC Studios in association with Cardiff Council.

The new Experience is currently in development at Cardiff Castle, in the centre of the city, and due to be operational by the summer of 2019.

Cardiff previously hosted a Doctor Who Exhibition at a location near the TV studios where Doctor Who is made. It closed in 2017 leaving Cardiff council taxpayers with a £1.1 million pound bill.

The new location contains a medieval Norman castle as well as a Victorian Gothic revival mansion and is located in the heart of the city.

Although BBC Worldwide have said there are no plans for a Doctor Who exhibition in Cardiff, the item is listed on the agenda of the Cardiff Council Cabinet this Thursday.

Lovarzi launch new Doctor Who apparel for Christmas

Saturday, 10 November 2018 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Lovarzi, the UK’s leading online scarf retailer, is expanding its Doctor Who range with new Winter 2018/19 products.

Maninder Singh Sahota, Director of Lovarzi, said:
Doctor Who has been an important part of Christmas for over a decade now. Our original Doctor Who Christmas Scarf and Hat hit shelves in 2016 and we were nonetheless blown away by demand. Our new sweater is a perfect accompaniment to these items, and we're sure fans will love them.

For the first time ever, we're also releasing officially-licensed women’s gloves this year. The Pandorica Opens Scarf proved popular, and it's such a beautiful painting, we thought it was the ideal image to launch this extension to the range.

Lovarzi: Christmas Sweater 2018 (Credit: Lovarzi)After his battles with the Sycorax, the Master, and Harmony Shoal, the Doctor probably prepares for trouble around Christmastime. But you can gear up for the festivities with the TARDIS and Dalek Christmas Sweater, an exclusive pattern which incorporates the Doctor's faithful time-space ship and his most prolific foes. The design is complete with killer Christmas trees (like the ones seen in The Christmas Invasion and The Runaway Bride) and snowflakes… or is that the Great Intelligence?

Made from high-quality Acrylic, this yuletide jumper will keep loved ones warm while defending Trenzalore, listening to the Singing Towers of Darillium, or wandering around the South Pole after an invasion of Cybermen.

Available to purchase from our Amazon UK shop.

Lovarzi: Pandorica Opens Gloves (Credit: Lovarzi)The Pandorica Opens Gloves feature the piece by Vincent van Gogh, created as a warning to Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor, depicting the disaster that cracked the universe: the TARDIS exploding, leading to total event collapse.
The stunning picture is digitally-printed on high-quality velvet-feel fabric, so shows the screen-accurate image in all its glorious detail.

Lovarzi: Cybermen Scarf (Credit: Lovarzi)Lovarzi's officially-licensed Doctor Who range launched in 2012, with the best-selling multi-coloured Fourth Doctor Scarf; since then, it's expanded to include the Seventh Doctor Paisley Silk Scarf, TARDIS Folding Umbrella, and Dalek Scarf.

But one of the show's most popular foes has been notable by its absence from the product line – until now. If you're suffering from a frailty of the flesh, the Cybermen will upgrade your body so you won't feel the cold. Or indeed anything else.

Alternatively, you can get an exclusively-designed Cybermen Scarf, which takes its repeated pattern from the ice-tombs of Telos, first seen in the Second Doctor serial, The Tomb of the Cybermen (1967). This classic story starred Patrick Troughton as the Time Lord, Deborah Watling as Victoria Waterfield, and Frazer Hines as Jamie McCrimmon.

From The Tenth Planet (1966) to Silver Nemesis (1988), Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel (2006) to World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls (2017); the cybernetic race has thrived for over 50 years. Made from high-quality wool and Acrylic, The Tomb of the Cybermen Scarf is fittingly completed by the Cyber-Controller's promise: "We will survive"!

Available to purchase from our Amazon UK shop.

Maninder adds:
Yes, the range has been upgraded! There are so many much-loved Cyberman stories, it was difficult to pick just one to focus on. But The Tomb of the Cybermen perfectly sums up their menace and genius, and provides us with the instantly-recognisable Cyber-head insignia. Plus, when Matt Smith was cast as the Doctor, he watched some classic Doctor Who and fell in love with Tomb. And who's to blame him?!

Alongside these three items, a shorter, more manageable version of the Fourth Doctor Season 18 Burgundy Scarf is also now available. This second version is a more concise 200cm, so it's easier to wear day-to-day without dragging the tassels underneath you.

The TARDIS and Dalek Christmas Sweater and The Tomb of the Cybermen Scarf will be available to buy from 12th November from Lovarzi.co.uk and Amazon. The Pandorica Opens Gloves will be available to buy in last week of November.

Members of Lovarzi’s exclusive Doctor Who Fan Club can take advantage of a 15% discount on all newly launched Doctor Who products by LOVARZI. You can become a member here.

Lethbridge-Stewart: The Laughing Gnome: The Danger Men

Saturday, 10 November 2018 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Candy Jar Books have announcedd the third book in its anniversary series of Lethbridge-Stewart novels, The Laughing Gnome: The Danger Men:

Lethbridge-Stewart: The Laughing Gnome: The Danger Men (Credit: Candy Jar Books)The Laughing Gnome: The Danger Men
Written by Nick Walters
Cover by Paul Cooke

2011 and Brigadier William Bishop visits his old commanding officer, Brigadier Sir Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, who is a little concerned about a garden gnome he recently found. Soon both Bishop and his wife, Anne Travers, find themselves dragged through time after the Brigadier…

He’s a man on a mission. But he has no idea what the mission is. It’s 1999. Bill Bishop is plunged into a world of intrigue as he inhabits the body of Calum Bence of Department M – aka the Danger Men – on the trail of millionaire entrepreneur and suspected super-spy Dieter Allegro.

But is Allegro really the bad guy he’s made out to be? And who is the mysterious Otto Di Catania, and why is he so interested in the contents of a certain CD-ROM?

As he seeks these answers, Bill can’t help but wonder: will he ever find Anne and the Brigadier, will he even return to 2011, or is he destined to be lost in time forever?

Join Bill in his borrowed body as he travels from Johannesburg to London to Torquay and Austria on his mission impenetrable...

The Danger Men sees the return of popular novelist Nick Walters for his third Lethbridge-Stewart novel. Nick previously wrote Mutually Assured Domination in 2015 and The Man from Yesterday earlier in 2018.

Nick said:
When I was told of the story arc for this anniversary series, I immediately knew what I wanted to do: a straight spy thriller, with no sci-fi or fantasy elements other than the framing story and elements of the wider Whoniverse. At the same time, I had the idea for the opening scene, and it’s more or less exactly as you read it in the finished book! It’s rare that ideas come so fully-formed so quickly, but it’s wonderful when they do. I intended The Danger Men to be a homage to James Bond, Jason Bourne, Mission: Impossible and the works of John Le Carre, spoofing some elements yet taking the story deadly seriously. For example, women are always throwing themselves at James Bond, and the same happens to Bill Bishop in this book, but, of course, because he’s a gent and loyal to Anne he cannot reciprocate, leading to complications and comedy.

This is the first book in the range to focus primarily on Brigadier William Bishop. Range Editor Andy Frankham-Allen, explained the decision:
Ever since his first appearance in the first Lethbridge-Stewart novel, Bill has proven very popular with our readers. Up to now the books have been led by either the Brigadier or Anne, so the decision was made that, during this contained series of novel and under the steady hand of Nick Walters, we could take the risk of allowing one of our series-originated characters to take the lead. Bill was the only choice for that, really, easily being the most popular and the most connected to both the Brigadier and Anne – especially Anne, seeing as they got engaged during the course or the series and have been shown to be married by the 1990s. Of course, both the Brigadier and Anne make cameo appearances, and their presence is felt throughout. It is still every bit a Lethbridge-Stewart novel!

Music has a large influence on The Danger Men, with Nick explaining:
The story arc title, The Laughing Gnome, was inspired by David Bowie, of course. It’s set in 1999 so there are a lot of references to contemporary pop, rock and indie, in chapter titles for example, and the naming of operations by Department M, which subverts the conventions of naming such things after works of high culture in Le Carre and Deighton novels. There is, however, one group, one very famous group spanning the eighties and nineties, who are still going now, who inspired the majority of the character names and references. Stella Van Steiner, Dieter Allegro, Otto Di Catania – I’ll let you guess who! We plan to do a soundtrack for the book, containing all the songs referenced therein, which should be available on Spotify soon. Such things as pop music references are great fun of course but only the icing on the cake. The Danger Men is, I hope, a fast-moving, thrilling, funny and sometimes alarming spy caper with loads of twists and turns. It’s also a study of identity – Bill has to take on various aliases in his mission, and the more he takes on the further he feels isolated from his true self. So, underneath all the fun is all this existential musing on the nature of existence.

The cover is by Paul Cooke, returning for his second novel after providing the artwork for Nick Walters’ previous book, The Man from Yesterday. Paul said:
It was a very pleasant surprise to be asked back to do another cover for the series. When I read what the story was about, was thrilled - it was a perfect opportunity do a cover influenced by some of the period film posters I enjoy. I was thinking I would approach this in a slightly different style to my last one, a bit more painterly. The only problem was not to make it too pulpy in look, which is when I hit upon the idea of the computer screen type, which immediately gave the piece a sense of time.

The Laughing Gnome: The Danger Men is available for pre-order now. The book is due for release at the end of November.

The Laughing Gnome will continue in early 2019 with book four. The Day of the Matador, by Robert Mammone, sees our heroes reuniting in 1970s England dealing gangsters and Dominators! This is followed by book five, Lucy Wilson and the Bledoe Cadets by Tim Gambrell, with On His Majesty’s National Service by David A McIntee following a month later.

The Paternoster Gang return for Big Finish

Monday, 5 November 2018 - Reported by Marcus
The Paternoster Gang (Credit: Big Finish)Audio producer Big Finish is to bring back The Paternoster Gang for a new series of audio adventures

Neve McIntosh, Catrin Stewart and Dan Starkey return as Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax the Sontaran for their own adventures in The Paternoster Gang – Heritage.

Set during the Victorian London of the Twelfth Doctor’s era, the Paternoster Gang have finally been reunited. The much-loved characters from the Steven Moffat era of Doctor Who will return next year in a new set of audios from Big Finish Productions made in association with BBC Studios.

They’ll be facing the first electronic automated cars in London (very ahead of their time), hordes of zombies, and ghost-like figures which are haunting Greenwich before their former selves have died.

Plus they’ll have to cope with the capers of the Bloomsbury bunch! This intergalactic alien trio, comprising a Sontaran couple and their Silurian female servant, will be causing trouble in London – and this town isn’t big enough for two extraterrestrial gangs.

The first adventure for the Paternoster Gang is being released as part of The 8th of March celebratory box set. Following this, four volumes, each containing three adventures, are coming out in 2019 and 2020, kicking off with volume one, Heritage, being released in April:
  • 1.1 The Cars that ate London by Jonathan Morris
  • 1.2 A Photograph to Remember by Roy Gill
  • 1.3 The Ghosts of Greenwich by Paul Morris
Catrin Stewart, Neve McIntosh, Dan Starkey (Credit: Big Finish)Dan Starkey, who plays Sontaran butler Strax, told us about the gangs triumphant return
Remain calm, human scum! Strax need no longer sulk and polish his grenades! It'll be a pleasure to get the gang back together: Big Finish listeners can be assured that we'll be in full prosthetics and restrictive Victorian tailoring in studio to get right back into the Paternoster Row vibe! Can't wait to get started!
Neve McIntosh, who plays Madame Vastra, says
At last our fans will get more adventures with The Paternoster Gang and will find out more about how we came to be!
The Paternoster Gang Volumes 1-4 are available for pre-order now ahead of their release in April 2019, October 2019, March 2020 and October 2020, at £25 on CD or £20 on download each from bigfinish.com and will remain at this price until general release when they will be available for £30 on CD or £25 on download each.

Each box set will consist of three audio adventures plus an additional disc of extras.
