Adventure Game Four for Christmas Day

Thursday, 2 December 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The BBC have announced the final game in the first series of the Doctor Who Adventure Games:

The Adventure GamesShadows of the Vashta Nerada

Kicking off immediately after the cliff-hanger ending of episode three, the latest Adventure Game picks up the story of the Doctor and Amy who've materialised just south of London (and about a 1000 miles to the left), inside a sea-bed colony called Poseidon. Shadows of the Vashta Nerada features a cracking plot which surrounds a real-world conspiracy and, of course, it takes place at Christmas.

Steven Moffat, executive producer and lead writer for Doctor Who: "We've gone all-out for the season finale. Shadows of the Vashta Nerada takes place entirely underwater - something which would be impossible for the TV series, as water is so expensive. It's thrilling, terrifying, educational and fun. Just steer clear of those shadows..."

As one might expect from the title, the storyline will feature the return of the shadowy Vashta Nerada, previously 'seen' in the Moffat-penned episodes from Series Four, Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead.

The game is written by Phil Ford - author of the first 'gamisode' in the series, City of the Daleks - and is due to be released in the UK on Christmas Day, where it will be possible to download for free from the BBC Doctor Who website for both PC and Mac platforms

As with the previous games, Shadows of the Vashta Nerada will be available for purchase worldwide on the PC platform at a later date from Direct2Drive, who will release both this and the third game TARDIS together as a bundle; however, the Mac version will not be available outside the UK.

As we reported in September, Season Two of The Adventure Games is expected to come out sometime next year, developed by the same team as with the current games.

The news came as part of the BBC's 2010 Adventure Calendar, where you can also download festive wallpaper featuring the Doctor and Amy as part of Day Two in the run-down to Christmas.

The Mazes of Time: Android platform version expected?

Tuesday, 30 November 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
A version of the mobile game The Mazes of Time is to come out for the popular Android operating system as well as the already reported Apple platforms, if an advert published by the game's author Oli Smith is accurate.

The author's article was posted on the 23rd November, a day before the official announcement, so the decision may have changed - though a link to the advert was posted today by Tag Games on their Twitter feed.

Oli Smith wrote of the game:
Developed by the talented developers at Tag Games, this action puzzle adventure charts the adventures of the Doctor and Amy as they attempt to rescue an innocent family, scattered through time by the fallout from a Dalek attack, and will be out sometime in December!

Doctor Who: The Mazes of Time

Wednesday, 24 November 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
A new game is to be released for Apple's iphone/ipod/ipad for Christmas. The platforms will see mobile games designer Tag Games release The Mazes of Time, which will be available from Apple's iTunes store.

The game will enable the player to take on the role of either the Doctor or Amy, and engage in action puzzles in which the time travellers race to save a family that has been attacked by a rogue Dalek. It is aimed for players aged six upwards, and has been written by Oli Smith, who was also responsible for the recent Nintendo games Evacuation Earth and Return to Earth.

The Head of Games Technology, Robert Henning, said:
Doctor Who is the UK's number one science fiction property, and I think it is in the BBC's top three for worldwide sales, so it is great to bring it to Dundee. Since we were established we have never done a game for ordinary retail — it has always been digital distribution. The digital model allows us to talk directly to our customers, so it is quite different from the traditional games model. We can get feedback from our customers and change and adapt things.
Doctor Richard Wilson, of games industry representatives TIGA, said:
This is fantastic news for Tag Games, and it demonstrates the level of creativity in the industry and it shows the government should be backing this important sector. But it is really encouraging to see a Dundee game company secure a licence like this.

Meanwhile, the existing Nintendo games have had mixed reviews, with the Wii version Return Earth reported by the Official Nintendo Magazine as failing to break the top ten games last weekend (it was number 11). Promotion for the titles is set to be cranked up in the lead-up to Christmas, with greater advertising on digital channels catering for children (e.g. CITV, Nickelodeon); a front-cover splash for Doctor Who Magazine has also been mentioned by promoters Koch Media.
