Notes From Invasion

Sunday, 24 July 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

Some details from this past weekend's Invasion V convention, where actors Noel Clarke (Mickey) and John Barrowman (Jack) appeared. Both actors said they would definitely be returning to the series, although there was no news for Barrowman on when; Noel would be joining the cast for the filming of the special, "The Christmas Invasion" on Monday. Mickey is revealed to be a car mechanic, and his character will be developed significantly (but, of course, Noel wasn't saying anything specific about this!)
Barrowman revealed that there were several endings originally planned for "The Parting of the Ways," some clearly before they knew they were going to regenerate the Doctor or get a sense of how successful the series would be, but in all versions Jack would not have immediately re-joined the crew (in fact, one early version ended with Rose actually dying from the effects of the Time Vortex!) Both said they'd had no idea Eccleston would be leaving. Another outtake from episode 13: apparently on the second take of Jack's farewell kiss, John kissed Billie as normal, and then, when it came to Chris, gave him a full-on snog...which Chris, getting the joke, just on followed through, with them both ending up, still entwined, rolling around on the floor, the cameraman desperately trying to keep up with them...
Barrowman said he has recorded commentaries for episodes 9, 10 and 11 (with Julie Gardner and Annette Badland) for the DVD boxed set due out in November, which will include commentaries on all 13 episodes. He doubted the shot excised from "Bad Wolf" (the 'bum shot') would make it to the DVD given the 12 certificate (though he hinted that a check of his website in the future wouldn't go unrewarded.

New Year Location Filming

Monday, 10 January 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
We've received a brief report from the folks at TIMELESS, the Cardiff branch of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, concerning filming in Cardiff this weekend on location for the new series. Click on the spoiler tags to check it out (with thanks to Timothy Farr for the info!)
On the afternoon of Sunday 9th January 2005, the two ends of Womanby Street (one in Quay Street and the other opposite Cardiff Castle) were sealed with traffic cones and security people in yellow reflective waistcoats. Shortly before 7pm, Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose Tyler were performing a sequence in which they run into an alley off Womanby Street opposite The Gatekeeper pub. The alley was dressed with washing hanging to dry from lines between the buildings and looked not unlike the closing credits to 1960's editions of soap opera Coronation Street, albeit in colour. This prompted speculation among onlookers that these scenes are intended for the rumoured storyline in which Rose finds herself in a time when her deceased father was still alive. There was one strong overhead light source on set shining into the Alley from Womanby Street all evening, suggesting both a moonlit scene and that all shots being recorded were taking place in the Alley. There was a break in recording at 9pm and Billie Piper left at this time. Sources on set claim that recording is set to continue through until 3am.

updates from invasion 3 convention

Monday, 3 March 2003 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
Two items of note that came out of the Invasion 3 convention yesterday held by the Tenth Planet store in the UK. First, actor William Russell (Ian Chesterton), in his appearance, noted to the group that he had recently recorded a commentary for The Dalek Invasion of Earth DVD release, which he did not specify as to a release date (though several retailers and TV Zone Magazine, as we previously noted, report this as a rumored June 2003 release, but nothing official has yet come out of the BBC.) Also, Gary Russell of Big Finish confirmed that, following the release this November of "Zagreus," their 40th anniversary special, actor Paul McGann has agreed to participate in four new Eighth Doctor audios which he stated would be released from December 2003 through March 2004. (Thanks to Kris Stevens, Phillip Madeley, Doug Holguin, James Hadwen, James van-der Heiden)
