Mary Wimbush, John Hollis

Wednesday, 2 November 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

Mary Wimbush, who starred as Sarah Jane Smith's Aunt Lavinia in "K9 and Company" and as Esme Harkness in the 1993 Russell T Davies serial "Century Falls", has died at the age of 81. She was perhaps best known as a regular in BBC Radio 4's long-running soap opera "The Archers" as the voice of Julia Pargetter-Carmichael, and from roles in various popular television shows such as "Poldark" in the 1970s and "Jeeves and Wooster" in the 1990s. BBC News has printed an article about her passing.
John Hollis, who played Professor Sondergaard in the Jon Pertwee serial "The Mutants," died on October 18 in London of natural causes. Hollis had an extensive career in science fiction roles, including on "The Tomorrow People," "Blake's 7," "Adam Adamant Lives," "The Avengers," "A For Andromeda" and in the films "Flash Gordon," the "Superman" series and "The Day of the Triffids," and is perhaps best known to fans as Lando Calrissian's aide Lobot in "The Empire Strikes Back". UK Gold Update

Monday, 24 October 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
This week's UK Gold rebroadcast of the first season of the new Doctor Who series also includes additional rebroadcasts a day later on the UK Gold+1 channel and early morning broadcasts; we've updated the Outpost Gallifrey broadcast calendar with full details on times. Also, we've learned that the show will also be repeated as part of the Big Night in campaign on Saturdays from Week 44; trails have been made to promote the Doctor Who week.
Meanwhile, below are two photos of the UKTV Gold billboard and the UKTV Gold phone box ad for the broadcasts of the current series on the channel, which are noted by our correspondent as "reasonably rare relative to the ads for the new series back in March." Click on each for a larger version. (Thanks to Anthony Forth for the photos)

UK, Australia DVD News

Monday, 24 October 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
At the Stamp Centre signing last Thursday, Tom Baker noted that he had recorded commentaries for two DVD releases, "Genesis of the Daleks" alongside David Maloney and "The Hand of Fear" with actress Judith Parris, the day before, while Nick Courtneymentioned that he had recorded one for "Inferno". As has been noted before, these recordings are not indications that DVD releases are imminent, but merely take advantage of the actors' presence in London and their schedules. However, this fits in with rumors Outpost Gallifrey has heard about potential releases for 2006.
Also, we have been told that the release of the first series boxed set has now been confirmed for 8 December in Australia. (Thanks to David Brider, Tony Keywood)

Doctor Who on HomeChoice

Sunday, 9 October 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
UK digital TV supplier Home Choice - mainly covering the London area - is now showing Dr Who on their video-on-demand channel C1, a package called "Doctor Who Through The Ages". The stories are: 'The Three Doctors', 'The Deadly Assassin' (minus drowning sequence in Pt 3), 'The Caves of Androzani', 'Timelash' (cut up into four parts), 'The Curse of Fenric' (four part version) and the entirety of the first season of the new series (in 4:3 format). It's got rather a nice menu screen in which you first choose which Doctor you want, then choose any episode of the story (rather like on a DVD). The channel is currently trailering the series with an identikit quiz (eg Peter Davison's jumper and a Dalek's skirt!) followed by a teaser of clips from various stories. Tegan Jovanka Returns

Thursday, 15 September 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
In a stunning reversal from earlier news from the actress herself, the newest issue of Doctor Who Magazine confirms that Big Finish has signed Janet Fielding to reprise her role of air stewardess Tegan Jovanka for an audio play to be released in the summer of 2006. Entitled "Summer in the City" and set in her home town of Brisbane, the story will feature the former companion (who joined "Doctor Who" in Tom Baker's final story "Logopolis" and lasted throughout much of Peter Davison's tenure) but it's unclear as to whether she'll be joined by any of her Doctor Who castmates such as Davison. More details soon.

Web Planet Update, Plus More Release Dates

Wednesday, 14 September 2005 - Reported by Shaun Lyon
The delay to the DVD release of The Web Planet, which we reported early this week, appears to have been caused by classification confusion on the cover, which shows a PG rating next to the defintion 'Suitable for all', which should apply only to 'U' rated shows. Although some copies do seem to have been released, the official release date has been pushed back another couple of weeks while, presumably, the covers are reprinted with the correct BBFC details.
According to the BBC Shop, the following are the actual release dates for forthcoming BBC items besides "Web Planet": "World Game" by Terrance Dicks (BBC Books) is due out Thursday, October 6; "The Legend continues" by Justin Richards and "The Shooting Scripts" on Thursday, October 13; BBC Audio's "Travels in Time and Space" on Monday, November 7; and the DVD "The Complete First Series" on Monday, November 21. Also, it now appears that BBC Books will release two Doctor Who novels on the same day: Simon Guerrier's "The Time Travellers" and Andrew Cartmel's "Atom Bomb Blues" are now both scheduled for release on Thursday November 10.
In addition, and in common with other online retailers, the BBC Shop now lists the initial toys from Character Options as being release on Monday 17 October, with the interactive board game due out on 29 September. Also,
Penguin Books' website is now listing three of the next batch of BBC Children's Books for release in October, and includes what may be a rough version of the cover for the quiz book here. (Thanks to Steve Tribe)

Web Planet DVD Delay

The Web Planet, which was due out this month in the UK on DVD, has apparently been delayed for a month, and is now being listed on various retail sites like Play.com as being out in early October. The discs have already been pressed and packaged, according to a post on the Restoration Team forum, and there is currently no official word as to the delay. We'll keep you posted...
