Cover Art for upcoming Big Finish Releases

Monday, 4 December 2006 - Reported by R Alan Siler
Big Finish has released the final cover design for the upcoming Seventh Doctor release, Noctorne, starring Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor, Sophie Aldred as Ace and Philip Olivier as Hex.

Also available is the cover art for the upcoming Fifth Doctor adventure Circular Time, starring Peter Davison as the Doctor and Sarah Sutton as Nyssa.

Circular Time is scheduled for release in January 2007, Nocturne in February.
Circular Time

Summer to winter, the seasons turn.

In the springtime of a distant future, the Doctor and Nyssa become embroiled in Time Lord politics on an alien world. During the stifling heat of a summer past they suffer the vengeful wrath of Isaac Newton. In the recent past, Nyssa spends a romantic golden autumn in an English village while the Doctor plays cricket. And finally, many years after their travels together have ended, the two friends meet again in the strangest of circumstances.

Four seasons. Four stories.

Now close the door behind you, you're letting the cold in...

Nocturne

On the human colony planet Nocturne, there is suffering and blight, tragic symptoms of an ages-old war. Never the less, Nocturne is also one of the Doctor's favourite places in all of time and space, because it is here that a late, great flowering of human art - the High Renaissance - is taking place.

He has been back here, many times. It is a place of music and art which he finds inspirational and uplifting. It is a place he wants to share with Ace and Hex. It's always been a safe haven for him, a world of friends and laughter.

But with strict Martial Law imposed on the front-line city, and the brutal scourge of interstellar warfare vicing the system, how safe can anyone really be?

There is a note of death in the wild, midnight wind...

Author Craig Hinton Dies

Sunday, 3 December 2006 - Reported by Kenny Davidson
Doctor Who author Craig Hinton, a longtime contributor to the Virgin and BBC Books novel lines and Big Finish's audio ranges, has died. He was 42.

Hinton first became known for his articles about various sci-fi television programmes, including Doctor Who and Star Trek. He was also for a time editor of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society's journal Celestial Toyroom. This work brought him to the attention of the editor of Doctor Who Magazine, who offered him the role of reviewing merchandise for the magazine's Shelf Life section. It was whilst writing for the magazine that Hinton had his first novel, The Crystal Bucephalus, published as part of Virgin Publishing's Missing Adventures range. The book - which Hinton often referred to as "The Crystal Bucket" - was originally submitted for Virgin's New Adventures, and 50,000 words of this version were written before the change was made.

This novel was followed by a further Missing Adventure, Millennial Rites in 1995, and then by Hinton's only New Adventure in 1996, GodEngine, which featured the Ice Warriors as well as oblique appearances by the Daleks.

Following Virgin's loss of their licence to produce Doctor Who novels, Hinton began submitting proposals to BBC Booksand in 2001 they published his novel The Quantum Archangel as part of their Past Doctor Adventures range. This was followed in 2004 by the novel Synthespians, which again had started life as a proposal for the current incumbent Doctor before being altered to feature a previous Doctor. Synthespians also came into difficulties when an image of the television show Dynasty was used on the cover: the cover's creators had arranged for permission to use the copyrighted image, but had neglected to arrange permission to alter it, and so at the last minute a replacement cover had to be produced. It is this that appeared on the cover of the novel.

Hinton also wrote for Big Finish, with the Doctor Who audio play Excelis Decays being produced in 2002 and theTomorrow People play The Lords of Forever in 2005. He also contributed short stories to a variety of Big Finish's short fiction collections.

Hinton spoke often of having coined the term "fanwank" in some of his past reviews to refer to novels or stories that relied heavily on past continuity. Ironically, the term would often be applied to Hinton's own work, which frequently incorporated a great deal of Doctor Who history; Hinton himself embraced the label.

His most recent published work consisted of reviews of the 2006 Doctor Who episodes, published in Second Flight: Back to the Vortex II by Outpost Gallifrey's editor Shaun Lyon. Hinton formed part of the international panel of reviewers giving their thoughts on each episode for the book, which was released less than a fortnight before his death. At the time of his death, Hinton was working with co-writer Chris McKeon on a project called Time's Champion, a novel based on a former BBC Books submission of his which would have explained the circumstances surrounding the Sixth Doctor's regeneration. Hinton intended to publish the completed project online, and McKeon intends to complete the work in memory of Hinton and make it available to fans.

Hinton, an active and popular member of the Doctor Who fan community since the 1980s, was a regular poster on the Outpost Gallifrey forum since its inception in 2001. A memorial thread has been opened on the forum to leave tributes and share memories.

Outpost Gallifrey would like to offer its sincere condolences to all of Hinton's family and friends.

BBC Audiobooks Press Release

Wednesday, 14 June 2006 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

BBC Audiobooks has issued a full press release for the three audio CD readings of the recent Doctor Who novels The Feast of the Drowned, The Resurrection Casket and The Stone Rose due on 3 July. Details are below. (Thanks to Lucy Groom/BBC Audiobooks)
Time Lord David Tennant brings these three new Doctor Who novels to life with his peerless narration, due to be published exclusively by BBC Audiobooks on 3rd July. Taken from the BBC Books of the same names, each individual release also includes an interview with the author, conducted by David Darlington of Doctor Who Magazine.

This is the first time David has appeared as the Doctor outside of the television series and brilliantly brings the novels to life, providing the voices of all the characters including the Doctor's companion Rose as well as his deadly enemies. Justin Richards, author of The Resurrection Casket said: "It's doubly rewarding as an author, not just to write for such an exciting and imaginative series as Doctor Who, but to hear your words read by none other than the Doctor himself. It's a privilege and a pleasure to hear David Tennant as the Doctor on audio, and of course he brings the same enthusiasm and style to the role as he does for the television series."

The Feast of the Drowned by Stephen Cole
When a naval cruiser sinks in mysterious circumstances in the North Sea, all aboard are lost. Rose is saddened to learn that the brother of her friend, Keisha, was among the dead. And yet he appears to them as a ghostly apparition, begging to be saved from the coming feast... the feast of the drowned. As the dead crew haunt loved ones all over London, the Doctor and Rose are drawn into a chilling mystery. What sank the ship, and why? When the cruiser's wreckage was towed up the Thames, what sinister force came with it?
The river's dark waters are hiding an even darker secret, as preparations for the feast near their conclusion…

The Resurrection Casket by Justin Richards
Starfall – a world on the edge, where crooks and smugglers hide in the gloomy shadows and modern technology refuses to work. And that includes the TARDIS. The pioneers who used to be drawn by the hope of making a fortune from the mines can find easier picking elsewhere. But they still come – for the romance of it, or old-fashioned organic mining. Or in the hope of finding the lost treasure of Hamlek Glint – scourge of the spaceways, privateer, adventurer, bandit… Will the TARDIS ever work again? Is Glint's lost treasure waiting to be found? And does the fabled Resurrection Casket – the key to eternal life – really exist? With the help of new friends, and to the horror of new enemies, The Doctor and Rose aim to find out…

The Stone Rose by Jacqueline Rayner
Mickey is startled to find a statue of Rose in a museum – a statue that is 2,000 years old. The Doctor realises that this means the TARDIS will shortly take them to Ancient Rome, but when it does, he and Rose soon have more on their minds than sculpture.
While the Doctor searches for a missing boy, Rose befriends a girl who claims to know the future – a girl whose predictions are surprisingly accurate. But then the Doctor stumbles on the hideous truth behind the statue of Rose – and Rose herself learns that you have to be very careful what you wish for…

BBC Book, Audio Release Update

Tuesday, 30 May 2006 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

According to Amazon.co.uk, there has been a change to the lineup of Tenth Doctor novels planned for 21 September release. Now listed along with Stephen Cole's The Art of Destruction and Mike Tucker's The Nightmare of Black Island, is The Price of Paradise by Colin Brake, replacing Jacqueline Rayner's previously announced "The Last Museum". The details on Brake's book are in the outset box, below.

Amazon.co.uk is also listing an 6 November MP3-CD release from BBC Audiobooks of Doctor Who Reconstructed: The Highlanders, which will be the second release in the Reconstructed range, following 2005's "The Power of the Daleks". Details listed below.
The Price of Paradise, by Colin Brake
Laylora - the Paradise Planet - is a world of breath-taking beauty, where peace-loving aboriginals live in harmony with their environment. Or do they? The Doctor and Rose arrive to find that the once-perfect eco-system is showing signs of failing. The paradise planet has become a death trap as terrifying creatures from ancient legends appear and stalk the land...Is there a connection between the human explorers who have crash-landed and the savage monsters? What secret lies at the heart of the natives' ancient ceremonies? And, what price might one human have to pay to save the only home he has ever known? When a planet itself becomes sick, can there be a cure? The Doctor and Rose find themselves in a race against time to find out...This work features the Doctor and Rose as played by David Tennant and Billie Piper in the hit series from BBC Television.

Doctor Who Reconstructed: The Highlanders
This unique project matches the soundtrack recording of a classic 'Doctor Who' television story with a visual slideshow of 'telesnaps' showing images from the lost film recording. Of the 100 plus episodes of 'Doctor Who' which are absent from the television archives, only two elements survive: off-air sound recordings and 'telesnaps'. For each 25 minute episode of 'Doctor Who', approximately 70 off-screen photographs exist. Since 1998 BBC Audio has successfully published the soundtracks of these missing stories, with addition linking narration. This new MP3-CD series now marries the sound with the telesnaps, to present a slideshow of images from the episodes and going some way to 'reconstructing' the original film episodes. In 'The Highlanders', the Doctor (Patrick Troughton) and his companions Ben and Polly arrive on Culloden Moor in 1745. There they become embroiled in the bloody battle between Highlanders and Redcoats, and befriend a new Tardis occupant: Jamie McCrimmon (Frazer Hines).

The Dalek Conquests

Thursday, 2 March 2006 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

BBC Audiobooks have issued a press release for The Dalek Conquests, a new CD release that we first reported on in December. The release is attached below and the cover illustration for the release is at right; click on the thumbnail image for a larger version.
The Dalek Conquests
Exterminate... The Daleks invade BBC Audiobooks!

In an exclusive double CD feature, Nicholas Briggs – the voice of all the Daleks in the Doctor Who TV series – traces the history of the Doctor’s deadly enemies.

Packed with extracts from their many TV appearances, The Dalek Conquests covers every encounter the Doctor has had with his nemeses, from their very first meeting on Skaro to their battle at the end of the 2005 series. It also discovers where the Daleks come from, why they are bent on universal domination, and who was behind their original creation.

Commissioning Editor Michael Stevens said: "This is the perfect way for fans new and old to uncover the fictional history of the Doctor and the Daleks. Since 1963 they've been encountering one another on our screens and it's great fun to have that story told as one long saga. Nicholas came to our studios to record his linking material in December (pictured below). Hearing him recreate the authentic Dalek sound was spine-chilling."

The Dalek Conquests is scheduled for release on 1 May 2006.

Big Finish Update

Monday, 27 February 2006 - Reported by Shaun Lyon

More on the recent news posted today at the Big Finish website, including further details of the releases for the latter half of 2006 (in more detail than the recent report in Doctor Who Magazine). "There will be seven new double-CD stories," says the site, "including two releases in September. Plus, as a bonus, anyone who purchases the plays by subscription direct from Big Finish, will receive an exclusive extra story. The single-CD, subscriber-only adventure is entitled Return of the Daleks and features a companion-less Seventh Doctor in a battle with his arch enemies. Nicholas Briggs, who is of course the voice of the Daleks in the new Doctor Who TV series, will be heard once again shouting 'Exterminate' at the Doctor. Briggs is also writing and directing Return of the Daleks which will be something of a cross-over with his earlier Dalek Empire audio series. Return of the Daleks will be available to subscribers only and will not be available to purchase separately before December 2007. Following on from the previously announced release schedule, Nicholas Briggs is also writing the July 2006 play. Entitled The Nowhere Place, the story finds the Sixth Doctor experiencing ghostly encounters. The ominously entitled Red, by Stewart Sheargold, is August's release and features the Seventh Doctor and an exploration in to the motivation behind murder. The Reaping is the first of Joseph Lidster's two plays to be released in September. The Sixth Doctor discovers that someone is making novel use of the recently dead. September's second release is The Gathering and the Fifth Doctor is reunited with an old friend who might not be that pleased to see him. The Eighth Doctor, Charley and C'rizz take a stroll down Memory Lane in October. Written by Eddie Robson, the travellers find themselves locked in a suburban Hell where there really is nothing at the end of the lane. Novermber's release is We are the Deadby Martin Day. The Seventh Doctor finds himself trapped in the trenches of the first World War, but the enemy maybe closer to home than Europe. Finally, in December, Paul Cornell and Mike Maddox tells four seasonal tales with the Fifth Doctor in Circular Time. The Doctor Who audio adventures continue in 2007."
Other news: Paul Darrow, long-time star of "Blake's 7" and multiple Doctor Who guest actor, will have an autobiography released in hardcover by Big Finish, entitled "You're Him, Aren't You?" The company confirms that their third Gallifrey audio series will be released from May to August 2007, with two releases in July. And further details of the cast list from this month's free giveaway CD on the cover of Doctor Who Magazine, The Veiled Leopardare noted; in addition to stars Nicola Bryant, Caroline Morris, Sophie Aldred and Philip Olivier, the cast includes Alan Ruscoe, who starred during the first season of the new series as a background artist in various roles including as a Slitheen, an Auton and one of the "What Not To Wear" androids, as well as actors Lizzie Hopley, Steven Wickham and Stephen Mansfield
